I'm a pilot, and it is a VERY clear regulation. If you are not equipped for flying in icing conditions, you cannot fly into known icing. And some planes with de-icing equipment are STILL not allowed to fly into known icing. And if you encounter icing accidentally, there are procedures to follow. Not downplaying your friends death, just emphasizing that rule and procedures are there for a reason. It's no exaggeration to say that most regulations are written in blood.

I’m a pilot too. And I was trying to wrap my head around how “he just learned this.” There’s no way. You have to know the three types of ice and their hazards before you ever take your private checkride. I think he just lied to make it sound better and get more views.

You might feel like you're in an emergency, but really all that's happening is you're at risk of an early stall. Don't panick, keep climbing and talk to ATC if you have radar services to make sure you can descend. If you're flying VFR w/o radar services, just lower your altitude and level off. Doesn't have to be a big deal if you know what to do and are aware
@TheFormerTeam
@TheFormerTeam 6 ай бұрын
@@sumcarson Being at risk of an early stall is not something to take lightly. And it's not "feeling like being in an emergency" it's actually being in one... There's zero panic in that, just a fact of reality. For example in the aircraft I fly (PA28-181) it is approved for: (a) Day V.F.R. (b) Night V.F.R. (c) Day I.F.R. (d) Night I.F.R. (e) Non icing. If the flight condition I wish to fly in is absent from that list I am not permitted to fly in it. Making that flight condition hazardous and unapproved. If you are a pilot then please remember that the rules are made for a reason and you are not invulnerable, accidents can happen to you too.

There are 3 types of icing (1) the first one is known as rime ice ,this type forms in stratus clouds ,in a temperature between -10 to -20 C ,And it forms faster than clear ice and also it shatters with ease. (2)the second type is clear ice, and this ice forms in cumulus clouds in a temperature between 0 to -10 C, and this type is so dangerous compared to rime ice, because it is hard to get rid of it as well as it covers an extensive area on the wing ,and it forms slower than the rime ice. (3) the third one is Mix ice ,and which is the combination of rime ice and clear ice.

Main reason why iceing is so leathal for those wondering, ice on the wing changes the aerodynamic profile of the wing, not to mention it also adds a ton of weight (especially on bigger planes, water is heavy) changing the aerodynamic profile of the wings can increase drag (though this is rare) and almost always lowers lift, this leads to increased stall speeds, sometimes to where its impossible to land safely, sometimes where its impossible to fly at all.

Icing can typically occur when super-cooled water droplets - that's water still in liquid-form but below freezing - his the leading edge and props. This forms ice near instantly, but worse it also starts to accrete on the wing surfaces aft of the leading edge. This form of ice-accretion is especially dangerous as de-icing boots will fail to shift it, it adds considerable weight and greatly reduces lift. It can also block air-intakes, cause flutter on control-surfaces, and will not readily melt or fall off with reduced height. It also accretes VERY fast.

the only problem is that planes have a special coating equipped on them that will NOT let snow/ice build up. Especially in bigger planes ICING will NOT be a problem. Usually ice forms on SMALLER airplanes maintained by private owners or bad company's. Also before planes are sold, in manufacturing the special coating is applied. Again in bigger airports you can REQUEST de icing depending on the coldness. Fun fact: Planes are safer then cars, ships and other types of transport.
