Hi from Denmark. I have been following you since the beginning I believe and your journey coincided with mine. 35 years old, overweight, I never played football. As my kids discovered football I got to practice with them, covered up for their trainers, then trained them. Until we decided to create an Old People team and got a dozen of locals involved. Community, family, physical and psychological health...huge bonus in our lifes.

@@lukessportsacademyyou should explore the officiating side of the sport. It really opens of the footy mind. Most players and coaches (and especially) fans never truly engage with the referee perspective and it leaves a huge blind spot. I’m very familiar with that side if you want to chat about some ideas for videos. Love the channel!

@@reececlarke4813 well, two very different perspectives. Most interestingly as an AR, the spacing of the back line and the ways to exploit it to get in behind become obvious. When you spend 90 minutes looking parellel to the offside line, it just changes the perspective of what is actual going on in the game to create xG. As a center ref with the whistle, there are many more disparate and subtle things that become obvious, but a less useful yet more enlightening observation is just how subjective the game can be…: a challenge happens, you blow the whistle, one team is arguing no foul, the other team is arguing for a yellow. Ma ma ma ma ma ma mad madness.

Wow! You can really see your progress! As someone who has played for over 25 years, 10 of them at a semi-professional level, I can tell you, you seem to have good coaches. Because the most important thing's first, balance and timing. The feeling for the ball will then almost come by itself over time if you play regularly. My second piece of "advice" is: don't overdo it. your knees hurt, take a break for 1-2 days. But since you're a coach yourself, I'm sure you already knew these things. Keep up the good work and don't be too dogged, because in the end it's all about having fun, 10 (at least) friends and maybe the opportunity to improve your quality of life for now and later in your life. It doesn't have to happen overnight. Greetings from Germany!

Thats crazy how one sport can affect so much. As a Brazilian, i can tottaly understand why your passion is beeing erupted, and why changed your life. I've always had this feeling of freedom, happiness and control over time... while playing football, running through the pitches, dribbling past 2 defenders, scoring a goal top bins.. is just a unique feeling. To me was so natural born and raised in this life, that i never knew when I was evolving, because everything was natural to me... but i cant imagine how gratifying is, to know that U are getting better, that U are feeling this, mixed with all what i felt during my childhood and as a teenager... I hope that in 2024, u can get even better physically, cuz that will just help u immensely, not only for this amazing sport, but for your life overall. Just to share with u and your viewers, i won some trophies, medals, championships, I won state, regional, etc. as a teenager and it was the best thing that ever happened to me, i hope that u can get to the point that u can compete in even very low amateur championschips in the future, and share a game with us. I would be so happy!!! Thank u for this video and sorry about my rotten english hahaha

I´m from the Faroe Islands in the north Atlantic, and though we are only 54.000 people here, we have 6000 registred Football/Soccer players. My advise to you would be, keep it simple at first. Learn how to pass and shoot the ball really well, before going on to tactical stuff, and drills. When I was a kid, I used to be outside my house, kicking the ball against the wall of the house, using the inside of my foot and practising passing the ball with the inside of my feet. Try and use both feet, even though you probably have a favorite foot already, which is normal. That´s the easy way of passing the ball. Then you can start practising how to shoot and make longer passes with the top of your foot. Most football players, start kicking a ball at the age of maybe 3-4 years old, so it´s not easy starting at your age, but you can absolutely become an OK player if you work hard, and again, keep it simple at first. I noticed your shoes. They are a bit to high, for playing on a hard court floor. You should get yourself some indoor shoes which are much lower, and therefore give you far more control, in your passing and controlling the ball. The shoe thing can also wait a bit, until you´ve dropped even more weight if that´s your goal, because of the less impact absorbtion in the lower shoes, compared to the shoes you are wearing at this point. Just keep going, and keep playing this beautiful game - keep it simple and don´t overthink it.😊

You know, it's funny - recently I spent some time trying to teach my nephew how to stop the ball on first touch. It's always interesting to be given a reminder how exhausting it is to play Football... The only trick to it is to not stop. Even if you weren't born with a ball at your feet like some of us were (no joke some of the first toys Argentinian babies get are balls, usually the classic black and white pentagons), you can do it. Cheers, and maybe one of these days you'll manage one of those wonderfully curved 20 meter free kick goals, who knows?

It's great to see how you've found a new flame inside of you to start training again and keeping at it for an entire year. Hopefully you'll bring that flame everytime you train this year and know that football is just like any other skill you become better just by doing it. Everything you walk up to that pitch to train or in your garden to the ball just to kick it against the wall. You'll be a little better than the day before and tomorrow you'll be a little better than today.

Usually, at least at Spain, when you're playing with friends, the one who doesn't control the game is place at the front, to receive the ball and try to score. The better ones play more at defence positions, so they pass and protect the goal. It's a smarter strategy and you won't get frustated because of your 'bad passing'. Also, you'll score some goals, which will encourage you to keep practicing. I said this before, (I think), but I'll say again: I love when people find out how amazing is football. I love your channel. Thank you!

I will always be grateful for the NFL in helping me appreciate tactics in sport. With the rules being different for UK broadcasters in terms of how many ads we're allowed to air, the NFL games would get extra breaks back to an analyst in the studio, and they'd go in to detail about specific parts of the play like how the O-line held off a blitz allowing x, y or z to happen. The tactic soccer are a lot more subtle, but the NFL helped train me in to watching how players off the ball were moving. I can't watch it any more, I think my love the game started to cool after reading about Dave Duerson passed. Now when I see the game I see young athletes getting paid well, but I wonder what their quality of life will be when they are in their 40s, let alone their 60s. It just does too much harm, even when the game is played properly. No judgement on people who do watch it and still enjoy it (I met Aden Durde, the new Defensive Co-Ordinator for Seattle during my time following the UK sport and kind of feel bad I'm not following the results any more...) Glad to see you using football as a way to get fit - what's great about the sport is one of the reasons I believe it spread so far, it can reasonably be played with a small number of players on a small surface. I remember as a kid we could play with just 3 people as long as we had a ball and a way to mark goals ("jumpers for goalposts!"), we could play '3 and in'. Good luck with your continuing journey. Have you thought about setting up an Amazon wishlist? I reckon you'd get a lot of fans happy to buy you books about soccer off there, I will always recommend Inverting the Pyramid, Dynamo: Defending The Honour Of Kyiv, and You'll Win Nothing With Kids, which are great books about very different areas of the game. I just wish I could afford to send you any of them myself

Hi there Luke im from England and this video hit home to me. The game of football is like a drug for its supporters and a way of life over here.on the health side i lost my father last sep due to diabetic complications and i have type 2 and a physical spinal disability since 98 that has ruined my life since i was 28! Your video and future instalments will be required viewing as its so wholesome. I played top level amateur football, athletics and my main love cricket and losing that out of my sent me to dark places that no one should end up in. But having see dad suffer with type 2 keep it up as the alternative is awful. Your first attempts showed me that you and your sister were sportsmen and sone decent touches. You will get there trust me and when you do i want to see you play a 11 aside game, plus the big lad always played centre back/defence as kids😂 ours was nicknamed tank who was a top rugby player as an adult. Coming across your channel just after the world cup sparked something and ever since I've been rediscovering and reconnecting with the sport myself. I've always been more interested in the tactics, management and logistics of it, so the channels you used to get a sense of how football worked set me on a weirdly parallel development to yours, for someone who grew up playing and being surrounded by the sport. 😁 You show you humbleness about your level of knowledge but determination about your passions. @@loganleroy8622 We play just about everything, just not all of it is at a level where it gets much coverage. You missed out Cricket as an obvious one, we're usually in the world top 5 in Hockey (the one played on grass)and Netball, we are pretty good in athletics, we've got I think a semi-pro basketball league, we also play tennis, table tennis, badminton, golf, tennis, and we're usually represented in most types of motorsport. Cycling really took off after Chris Boardman back in the Barcelona Olympics if I remember the time line correctly. Oh, and we're usually doing really well in most forms of sailing and rowing in the Olympics. Sailing is interesting because apparently the Solent (the stretch of water between the south coast of England and the Isle Of Wight) is a very challenging area to sail in so it's a convenient training place. I don't think we do much in surfing simply becaue our best surf areas are pretty mediocre (compared to places in the Pacific for example). We also do a lot of the combat sports (boxing, MMA, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Karate). With that said you can probably find any sport in a reasonable distance if you live in a major city. I could play volleyball, American Football, roller derby, pro-wrestling (OK, more theatre than sport but thought I'd mention it), Kabbadi (an Indian sport), Baseball, Australian Rules Football... I don't know if I've ever seen hurling or lacrosse here, but I imagine you can find those in London if you look hard enough

Ajá...my guy, first touch passes are hard without practice. Try to stop the ball first. Increase your general balance. Always do a firm step, with your stepping foot pointing where you pass. Use the interior of the feet for more security. And the most important, constantly scan the field and take a good look before you pass. Always be calm

Goodman, have been following since the start. Every kid across the planet, who wants to learn, has spent countless hours kicking the ball against a wall. Its the best way to improve technique on your own. Find a wall and put in the hours, you'll get there!

I remember stumbling over your first video, since I enjoy seeing people (alot of americans..) discover this beautiful game. And I've been following you since! I love that I can see your actually passion for the game in your videos and I think that sets you apart from alot of channels. I've played football for ~25 years and if you ever end up in sweden I'd love to play a few games with you and give you some pointers. The best advice I can give you is to keep grinding and keep watching players that inspire you and eventually it will all come to you! Keep doing what you do,you inspire alot of people!

Great to see you doing better and working on improving your health. I am from Europe (Denmark) to be specific, and more or less all clubs have (non-professional) teams for all ages. Who compete in leagues of different levels. Those above the ages of professional football players (like 35-40) are called Old Boys. Not sure if it exists in the US, but if not, it might be worth looking for other fans in like Texas and set up some teams and play eachother. It is a great social activity, it keep people in shape and then there is 'third half), where you all go to pub, get a beer and just relax and socialize with people (well, sometimes one beer is not enough...)

Also respect to you for taking your health more seriously its never too late to do right by yourself, its always worth it to treat your body right and take fitness more seriously. Remember that its not a sprint, its a marathon much like a game of football, seeing results and building sustainable healthy habits takes time but if you look back at this in 5 years, you will be proud that you decided to take this path.

Luke I have loved watching your channel over the past two years. one of the things missing in this journey was you watching "Welcome to Wrexham". That whole discovery you had about pro/rel. Surely, pro/rel might just be the most significant difference between US and other sports, the fact that a team you follow can make a journey and achieve something without being a franchise. It's the one thing that will, eventually come to US soccer that will make the MSL a credible league. Without pro/rel US soccer will always be a second tier football nation.

Very nice, glad it was a turning point in your life. As a brazilian, not a very good one at football/futebol, but from the perspective of someone who got contact with it since always, the only advice I can provide you to level up you skill right now is running. Football is a sport of movement and stamina, and most aplicable skills and strategies in it depend on being able to provide assistance very quick from anywhere in the field. At least on an amateur level, the roles besides goalkeeper are not much enforced, so even if you cant touch the ball, you can block passes or the movement of other players. So running (and getting those calves RIPPED) is essential. Its always good seeing someone working hard to better themselves in any field, and while I cant say I follow your journey since the begining, but I'm glad I found your channel. Keep going man

if you ever decide to jump as a keeper here are a few tips, before you jump you jump with the leg that is opposed to the side you wanna jump as you have more power this way. if the ball is coming in low your primary hand to block will be the one closer to the ground, up in the air its the opposite, hence you better reach over in the air, simple physics. Also befor you land you want to try to invert your body and get your hands in front of your chest kudos to you for getting work done! you already work on your balance which is great, whaqt would also benefit your skills greatly is when you run in training is running verticals as you simultaniously boost your stamina, space awareness and balance

Great reaction video, very encouraging and heartwarming. It's amazing to see how football can affect people, and in your case, will probably change your life, demonstrating the power of the beautiful game and why we are so passionate about important matches like the World cup and the Champions league. I look forward to joining you along your journey and offering moral support. So well done, keep going, we're right behind you... about 4500 miles behind (England, the home of football) but nevertheless in spirit and in soul.. right there mate 😊

My number one piece of advice for you to start with is just ball control, just get a nice brick wall somewhere and kick the ball to yourself off the wall, over and over until it starts to feel a lot more second nature. Try to use the instep of your foot more too. From there you can build up to other things but if the ball always feels alien when kicking it, then doing things with your friends is going to take a bit longer. You are an inspiration...I have let myself go and need to lose a lot of tummy fat...I think I need to get a ball and get back to doing stuff even at 43 and a UK dad. Keep going mate!

Hello Luke, how are you. I hope you're well. When passing to yourself against a wall, start a metre, metre and a half from it. You will learn to pace the ball - using your instep. The ball must come back towards you. Control it. Pass it again, control it... pass it again... etc. Try to control it with your instep or the ball of your foot. Next do some cardío, while waiting on the ball's return, run on the spot (so close to the wall, it won't feel like it - running on the spot. Just don't stand flat footed!!! Stay on the ball of your feet. I've noticed you're flat footed when receiving a pass. Running on the spot helps with your balance when receiving the ball. If the ball is going to your right use your left foot to propel you in that direction to take control of the ball and versa vica. Don't use your right foot to control the ball going across your body as it will throw you off balance, use your left foot. Practice both feet. TAKE IT SLOW. When you feel like you mastered it move a little further away, REPEAT. On a lighter note, we also call it soccer.❤🇿🇦

Man I would have loved to have been there when you and your sister were trying to do kickups (?). Not to like show off but to show you how fun it can be as not even an amateur. I was decent up until I quit when I was like 17 like an idiot (didn't have anyone pushing me unfortunately). It's not like American football where you really need to know how to play, have other people around who also know how to play and then actually play the game itself in order to have any fun. With Football (soccer) you can do a lot even if it's just you. When I was little me and a friend used to spend hours just shooting freekicks. When you get a good one and the ball wraps around the corner of the net and bounces out it's honestly addicting.

Good for you, man! You are taking it more seriously than just reacting to ot and maybe learning a rule or two. Watch your health! My suggestion is to avoid heavy mobility exercises, like fast changing of directions while running, because your mass will damage your knees and your waist. Keep it simpler until you lose some weight and then you can go for these.

Bro to kick it higher you need to hit the ball below it's center. Second tip: your standing feet points the way you're gonna shoot the ball, that's how you aim

Learning to play football, kicking, passing, control etc just takes a lot of practice and time. It becomes muscle memory for the most part. I used to be a set piece specialist when I played and could pin point corners and free kicks...I stopped playing when I was 30 because of an injury and tried again when I was 34 having not kicked a ball for that amount of time...I tell you now, I felt like you probably do in this video kicking a ball, it was completely alien to my brain. Just practice and keep practicing...tbh just kicking a ball around and doing keepy uppies is great exercise!

Hey, I'm from Italy, I've enjoyed every single moment of your video, keep going 💪❤. What a great journey, when I was younger I dreamed of playing am football 🏈, but I've always followed my local football ⚽ team, Roma. I soon understood why I love football ⚽ more, I'm short, 170cm and I play gk, 2 times a week with my friends, 5vs5...I never get bored, this game is so fun. Just playing with your friends and going to the stadium is so much fun. I've started going to live Roma women's football ⚽ team matches at stadium as well. Ps being short has alway been the worst nightmare when playing every sport, not with football ⚽. I've never felt out of place.

Just a thought. When you inevitably pick your Premier League side do it after watching everyone play first, don't just select a top team because they're a top team but instead try to wait for the one that resonates with you emotionally. One warning though, when you start down the football path forever will it dominate your destiny. Come on you Gunners.
