Possibly your best ever, fountain pens and journaling also helped save me, the pen when you pick it up automatically slows you down. It allows you to think deeply and when you put it to paper it becomes magical, because your subconscious mind activates in a way that heals you.

I remember a long time ago getting g the feeling that I was about a half step out of sync with remember world. Forty years later, after seeing this video, I recognize it as a facet of depression! I remember walking outside at night, and seeing my motorcycle sitting there gleaming in the moonlight, putting my helmet on , my well tuned machine rumbling to life with the merest touch on the starter button. Riding down the highway until suddenly everything slipped back into place. Sometimes it would rain, and other than my leather jacket, I had no rain gear with me. I remember thinking "It's raining, and I'm a long way from home". Then the first drop of cold rainwater gets under my collar and rolls down my back. My mood is not improved. Soon I an soaked to the skin, and the rain didn't matter anymore. After a while, I realized that I was cruising down the highway singing inside my helmet, and I was happy! This was years before I rediscovered fountain pens, and Journaling. Thank you for another insightful video, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Where or where is the love button? Never more than now has the thumbs up button been so woefully insufficient! You so clearly articulated many things that I didn't even realize I love about fountain pens and journaling. A fresh page, the routine of cleaning a pen and adding new ink and all that these actions symbolize, along with the peace they bring. The final quote is a perfect conclusion and I am not just saying that because it is from my fav book. Thank you, thank you, I will be watching this many times as this video is a treasure hunt of hidden journal prompts

Thank you for sharing your innermost feelings about your depressive times. Seems like you are the type of soul that takes in so much stimulation, family, friends, work, hobbies, beauty, surroundings, etc., that you become mentally so full, it's all too much to take in and you get overwhelmed. Here's hoping you continue to work through your depressive bouts and move on to brighter times. Seek therapy, if you haven't already, as it could help you work through the tough times. I'm wondering if the root cause is not internal loneliness. Sometimes we can be the most lonely even though we are surrounded by family, friends, co-workers, etc. We know these people love us and care about us, but sometimes there is still that nagging void inside us. Take care Hemingway.

Hemingway, your remarkable eloquence continuously takes my breath away; particularly, with regard to the subject of Depression. Afflicted with clinical Depression nearly all my Life, I can concur, it is indeed rather pernicious. With Depression that I regard as all-consuming and all-encompassing, it is truly the precious moments in which my pen touches my beloved Journals that I experience, for an ephemeral while, some semblance of calm amid chaos, a quieting of my internal cacophony, and a mending of my emotional wounds. Your channel has come to completely and utterly occupy a designation as a place of refuge in my life. Thank you for perpetually outdoing yourself. My heart, mind, Journals, and ever-growing collection of ✒ pens are eternally grateful.

Since joining the HJ channel I started journaling. Writing when I feel up or down, is a record of how I was that day. What I was feeling and what I could do to reverse the depression. What an inspirational and instructive take on such a serious affliction! I don't suffer from depression. However, I do deal with soimething of a physical counterpart, Atrial fibrulation. When attacks strike me, they come out of nowhere, always unexpectly, and are daylong events that paralyze activity and shred any lingering optimisim I might have that things eventually will get better and I''ll return to normal life again. And when somehow I do get back to where life was before, disbelief and incredible thankfulness sets in. And , like you say, that's when you begin to take time and joy in the smallest of things, even like the detail and beauty in the nib of a favorite pen. Thanks again for the advice.

...Wow. You expressed things very well. I'm very hesitant about writing volumes or turning myself inside out here. Maybe if I ever have a another channel of communication than a public YT channel. But I'll make a couple of comments. I don't do journaling like you, It's become more a tool to structure my life, but pursuing things that bring me 'joy' became my second, and a very powerful, weapon against depression. So that resonates very strongly. Other weapons are stoicism and Faith. I consider myself having been fortunate to have been brainwashed by religious education when I was a kid. I abandoned all that as I grew up and pursued a STEM education, of course. And I'll still say that I don't exactly believe in any religion. But one day I fell really far, and, for some reason, prayed in desperation for the first time since I was a kid, and as intensely as never before, and suddenly had a dramatic religious experience. You can say whatever you want, hallucinations, whatever, I don't care. I have Faith again.

It is a shame that this video was not seen by many more people. Depression is like a song that we have in our head and we cannot get rid off. Talking to someone, or writing in a journal, helps to externalize it, it is a bit like opening the windows to refresh a stale room and, to be more dramatic, a bit like an exorcism. We should never forget that we are who we are through the many interactions with many people, our parents first, then our siblings, our relatives, our friends. By our very own identity, we are therefore never alone.

Nice video, Hemingway. Birds of a feather flock together. Depression is a beast that lurks continuously, just beneath the veneer of our lives. I always must have something of interest to focus upon, or the depression rears its ugly head. For myself, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and failing to remember all the good that I have done over my life and my career, with hyper-focus on failures or perceived failures are the first signs that the abyss is approaching and is already dangerously near. Right now, I am teaching my early 60's-year old self to write using fountain pens and my arm instead of my fingers, like what was taught at the turn of the last century. It should be a challenge that keeps me focused for several more months! I love your videos, and I live vicariously through you and all of those wonderful fountain pens!

Really beautifully put, thank you for making this video. I feel the more this subject is discussed the less chance of stigma there is being attached. I have had depression since the age of four when my father tried to take me and my mums life. it also had other effects, stuttering and dyslexia. A few years after the event I was in junior school, around six years old, my handwriting was terrible as was my general academic achievements. A very forward thinking teacher who saw potential in my poetry lent me his fountain pen and within a very short time my handwriting improved as did my work in English. Seeing this and talking with my teacher my mum bought me a school fountain pen made by a German company, Geha, after a few years I was winning awards at school for my handwriting and poetry. Also, and this applies to this very day I was able to write out of my body all the negative depressive thoughts and this I find so helpful. If I sit down and write outside of myself the depressive thoughts I can see their hiding places more clearly. I am sixty this year, I have come to understand the black dog will always walk the same path I do but I also understand I don´t have to always pay attention to it and writing with a fountain pen slows my mind, calms me and allows me to see this. I also know that one of my greatest assets is my sensitivity, If that comes at a cost of having depression then it is a cost I am willing to pay. I would rather have that sensitivity than walk this world switched off. As an aside. I love that you are writing home thoughts, from abroad. Robert Browning is a great-great- granduncle uncle of mine! This from Anthem by Leonard Cohen has always meant a great deal to me.. Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack, a crack in everything That's how the light gets in. L.Cohen

Hello! Your new subbie here again…this was a very moving video. As a healthcare professional I have seen this more undiagnosed post pandemic. This made me cry, made me sad and at the same time made me happy that you are working through this and journaling and fountain made you find happiness. I will share your channel especially this video with others. Praying for your inner healing…Hemingway was one of my favorites in school. If you have time could you talk about the journals you use some of those I love the vintage look of them, no rush. Love your library…take care!

Hello I need to tell you that your reported statistics on number of views is incorrect. I myself have viewed this video at least ten times. Each time it means more to me than the last. Each time it says something different than the last time. Each time it says what I needed that day to reach for the next. Thank you. I have joined yesterday. I find your message and information (and humor sparse and dry as it is) keeps me moving forward. The cost of membership is small, but so is my income now that I am 77 years old. I will stay as long as I can make the budget work Once again (and so many times) thank you (My favorite pen is my wife's great aunt's parker 51, but my daily use is a Lamy Safari) With great admiration and love Larry

New to your videos. Nice meditation on fountain pens, tactile joys of writing and struggle with depression. I think some level of depression is a human reaction to life today without dehumanizing oneself. The challenge is to keep the beast in check and I also find writings d nice pens help as does having something meaningful to write about. Lovely Gardner Museum shots too. Sending Aloha.

I have just discovered your videos a couple of months ago. I have now joyfully subscribed. I am 67, but have loved fountain pens all my life. I have a collection of around 30, which you are helping me to learn how to really enjoy. I also struggle with depression and have been told journalling would help me, but I never could get started. I believe this video will help me. I have it downloaded. I love how you explore other subjects, like dark academia. I have also discovered an interest in this subject. I am a word person and really appreciate your vocabulary. Now, I have a couple of questions for you, if you don't mind. What is your opening music? It is as familiar to me as anything but I cannot for the life of me come up with where it comes from!. And the red pen that you show in this video. What is the identity of this pen? I really look forward to a future enjoying your videos!

Hello and thank you so much! Welcome to the channel! It seems that you and me have quite a bit in common. I love hearing about different people’s fountain pen journeys, and some of what they have gone through to get here. I was sad to read that you deal with depression as well, I know that this can be very difficult. This is part of the reason why I make so many videos on fountain pens and depression as a way to help myself to work through these issues and to share them in the hope that maybe someone else might also get some comfort from them. Thank you very much and the warmest welcomes! You asked me two questions. The first one was what is the music that I use at the beginning of my show I use this for the live show as well. It’s a bit of free music from the KZbin free audio library And it’s called @English Country Garden.” You’ll hear it at the beginning of one of my live shows and the red pen that’s featured in this video was the Conway Stewart Winston cherry red fountain pen. Thanks so much for watching and please do keep in touch I will be making another video on journaling and depression very very soon.

@@HemingwayJones Thank you so much for your reply. I watched another one of your videos today. It was the one where you basically told your life story, what you went through while growing up and navigating adulthood. At one point you wondered whether most of your viewers had absconded because the video was potentially so boring. I just wanted to tell you that it was probably one of the best therapy sessions I have ever experienced!
