How France’s Colonial Past Explains Its Racism Today

Despite resistance from French elite, there’ve been growing calls for France to recognize and apologize for its violent colonization of millions of people in Africa and Asia. In fact, by 1901, France ruled 79 million people over 4.6 million square miles.
“Where would France be without its colonies in the Caribbean?” asks Professor Mame-Fatou Niang. “Where would France be without its huge possessions in Sub-Saharan Africa? Where would France be without its possessions in Asia, without Algeria?”

The economic balance sheet for the colonies in Africa was catastrophic, the trade balance was in deficit, almost 71 billion gold francs. For what? Because it was necessary to develop the conquered territories, and for that to create infrastructures, bridges, roads, industries, hospitals, schools, dispensaries etc... and all that cost money. In addition, the resources generated by these colonies are expensive, more than the market price, to the point that not many people bought them, except in French clients. In Algeria alone, these clients paid 61% more for imports. On the scale of their economy, these imports represent almost nothing. The 6 or 7 main resources they needed were either at home or they were purchased elsewhere in the West. Ex: In 1913, in imports, 0.1% cotton, 3.2% wool, 0.2% silk. It's nothing. They will mainly import agricultural products for which they have paid enough to see that it is not worth it, so all of this, the citizens paid for it with their taxes. So, in terms of looting, there has been better. Some French Colonists got rich yes, but France, Clearly not. And even less the French Citizens.

The French colonist getting rich is added power to the game the French citizens are mostly imported and the French people are the Branches I'd guess.
@Goyim-phobic
@Goyim-phobic 10 ай бұрын
Though it is true that colonial powers invested in infrastructure and development in their African colonies, it is essential to consider the broader context. The claim that the economic balance sheet for the colonies in Africa was catastrophic and the trade balance was in deficit of 71 billion gold francs needs further examination. Firstly, the economic exploitation of African colonies was not solely about developing the territories. It involved a complex system of resource extraction, forced labor, and unequal trade practices that heavily favored the colonial powers. While some infrastructures may have been built, they were often geared towards facilitating resource extraction and transportation back to the colonial powers, rather than promoting sustainable development for the local population. The statement that the resources generated by these colonies were expensive and not widely bought outside French clients might be a result of the monopolistic and exploitative practices imposed by the colonial powers. Regarding imports, it's crucial to note that the focus on specific percentages of certain resources may not represent the full scope of the economic interactions between the colonies and the colonial powers. Your argument that colonial imports represented only a small portion of the economy fails to acknowledge the broader impact of colonial rule on the African economies, such as the suppression of local industries and agricultural practices. Furthermore, your claim that citizens paid for the colonial endeavors with their taxes overlooks the fact that the primary beneficiaries of the exploitation were the colonial powers and a small group of colonial elites. The local populations in the colonies often suffered significant social and economic hardships. Overall, the issue of colonialism is a complex historical topic, and it is essential to consider various perspectives and evidence to gain a comprehensive understanding of its impact on both the colonial powers and the colonized territories. While some French colonists may have become wealthy, it is undeniable that colonialism had severe negative consequences for the majority of the local populations and their long-term economic prospects.

@jean-francoisdupre3880
@jean-francoisdupre3880 3 жыл бұрын
I don't really agree to that point of view. France and the US have two different society ideals. Universalism in France, communitarianism in the US. Universalism believes, and in some way imposes, that all are equal and that colorblindness is the only way to obtain peace; while communitarianism believes that a peaceful cohabitation of communities, where all are set equal, is the way. Both have their ups and downs. Racism is present in both but for different reasons (much too long to elaborate here unless you wish so).
@glokta1
@glokta1 3 жыл бұрын
@@jean-francoisdupre3880 I think you misunderstood them. Yes, the prevalent view in the US is one of communitarianism but among American conservatives it's increasingly common to assume a "colorblind approach" to race a.k.a universalism. That's where the popular retort of "All lives matter" comes from in response to "Black lives matter" in the US and that's what they were alluding to as far as I can tell.

@jean-francoisdupre3880
@jean-francoisdupre3880 3 жыл бұрын
@RED RED Thank you for link. So is that it? May I point to you some shortcomings of this article: 1) So the "pact for the continuation of colonization" has no legal existence. There is no such international treaty signed by France or any of these countries. It is called like that by those who think that it has an informal existence. 2) The obligation of the CFA franc countries to hold reserves is of course not justifiable. Three remarks though: it does not directly costs anything to the African countries (all interests are given back to these countries). Be it France or another country, all states around the world hold reserves abroad. The amount was 50% not 75%. Macron recently agreed to change and the CFA franc is undergoing a massive shake up: the reserves will be returned and there are talks of a decoupling the CFA from the euro. 3) The article in the link dates back to 2014 and since then the author has still not found any evidence of the taxation he is talking about. The least we can do is have doubts about that informal and illegal taxation scheme.

Well, the French dont have permanent military bases on your soil, they haven't murdered your democratically elected leader and replaced with a French puppet who brutalises your people and allows France to extract all the natural resources for their use. They don't force you to use a colonial currency where 70% of the foreign reserves goes straight to the French central banks. I'm a Somali and hold no anger and resentment against the British and Italians who colonised my country. However with French speaking West and Central African countries it's different. The French never, in any meaningful way decolinised and still hold an enormous amount of influence and power over those countries

@@eaturcookiescookie7462Migration is a natural thing, and it's okay as long as there is a degree of cultural integration after 1-2 generations (which is true of Mexicans in the USA, the American born children speak English fluently). If for example US citizens who are moving to Mexico (there are over 1 million now) end up having kids and starting a family, what's wrong with that? The issue with mass migration of Muslims in Europe is that Islam has a radical element that is incompatible with hyper liberal Western European societies. The gap between Mexico and the US in terms of social values is much smaller than the gap between Muslims and the French for example. Most Mexicans are Catholic, and the remaining are Protestant or Atheist. None of those presents a cultural conflict to the USA.

Throughout the ages, empires have conquered other lands and enslaved others. Not just France, not just Europe, but every single person alive today has a past rooted in victory over others. You wouldn't be here otherwise. This idea that the western world is especially heinous and murderous comes sadly also from the idea of exceptionalism. A racist idea on its own, flipped around. It doesn't make it any less racist. Maybe it's time people accept that being conquered and being the conquerer was the norm throughout the world. Same with slavery. I don't feel the need to say sorry any more than the mongols feel a need to say sorry. We don't live in the past. Accept that history is history and that there are plenty of horrors and problems we face today that we have no time nor resources to whine about a past none were part of

This video lies about everything and doesn't tell you details like specific dates and people mentioned in this video. One example is that they talk about Haiti saying that they have been colonized but didn't say that when Haiti colonized Dominican Republic for year and kill many innocent people and enslaved them. They also use current maps instead of 1800s maps. Some of this countries didn't exist at the time. This video is trash with information that is incomplete and it's trying to make an agenda to make them look good by bending the truth.

Different parts of the world had different diseases and Natives weren’t exposed to this in America so yes, there are Natives that died, but it wasn’t murder. I will have to agree that some tribes got pushed, like the Mohawks got pushed away from the island of Montréal. Mohawks were the enemies of our allies so we didn’t care about them since they were hostile and the most violent tribe. But other groups weren’t put in reserves until the government of Canada adopted the bill of sauvages. Segregation of Natives happened later on, like I said, when the English came here. Not that they did it alone, but when Canada came in the picture, both French and English Canadians did atrocities. Natives were benefiting from the colonization when they were making trades with the French though. It is silly to say we slaughtered them because we never had any violent intention towards them when we arrived here. We knew we wouldn’t survive if we didn’t have their help because travelling across the Atlantic took 9 months at the time. Christianity as a religion doesn't exist.. it's just a political ideology that came to countries like yours with the European colonial powers to control your lands and benefit from it economically and strategic Even most of the people who brought you Catholicism gave it up today partly or fully.. while you still talk about an ideology that was re-written and reformed hundreds of times just to fit the agendas of its creators and colonizers.

@@branis96 I could say the same with all religions, be it Islam, Buddhism, or Hinduism. Religious institution are by nature political institutions used to legitimize one over another although some are worldly and than others since they dictate everything a person does. But, religion is also part of human nature, the inherent ability of humans to believe is what religion is founded on. To respect a religion is to respect a culture, and I see a lot of Christians being persecuted, beheaded, killed because of their faith. That is anti-progressive. Everybody has the inherent right to believe that is human nature. To kill someone and force someone to convert to other doctrines of belief just because it doesn't sit well with theirs is a crime against humanity, but what is worst than that is being silent. Christianity is the most persecuted today, many are killed, forcibly converted, and given little respect to, especially in the Middle East. Won't you agree that Christianophobia or should I say Christian genocide be something to be worried about especially if it doesn't gain the attention it deserves? Take for example the killing in France, many muslims countries betrayed Macron for implementing stricter ban on religious practices for the sake of France's liberal and secular values but never did I hear one mention about the innocent sacristans killed and teacher of course. The former Malaysian Prime Minister even confined the killing saying that the French should be killed.

I was pointing out how the literally innocent people are dying each day, humiliated, forced in horrible conditions, yet no one even looks at their way. France certainly has a lot of baggage in terms of colonialism history, but that doesn't justify the obvious and grotesque generalization that France is, somehow, generaly (more) racist. Also, there is indeed valid criticisms to be made about the american-centric view that is prevalent among the anglosphere and yes, there is a "woke" component to it that comes from US universities, plaguing public discourse. There are countries in the world that actually, and rightly so, put collective rights before individual rights. In many countries, including Canada, individual rights charters are more often than not used to promote neo-liberal and religious conservative agendas and not looking through the exact same prism americans do doesn't make any other nations more "racist".

@@mikhael636 So should the French choose to ignore the bloody racist history of Africans under French colonial rule. Look what happened in Algeria, the brutal treatment of Kheira Gharne and so many others. This isn't an American issue this is worldwide, the sooner people recognize it the sooner the we can stop the cancer of racism. Atoning for the past is not a bad thing, it leads to healing and better peace between countries and people.

Europeans makes fun of America for talking so much so about race, but that's the idea: you can't address racism without talking about race. French and British are way behind on this.

We make fun of americans, surely, FOR FAR WORSE than talking about race, which I agree to you is the key at the begining of it all; we make critique and fun of Americans rushing to be first and weaponising of characters of dead men, weaponising literally everything, because Yanks love their weapons and liberty to offence so much. Talking about the problems of race, human dignity and equality in America's history has a legacy of being violently repressed for at least 150 years.

Complete myth - "can't address racism without talking about race." How about you actually look up the basis for what you're saying before you say it? George Floyd's death sparked numerous race protests in the UK (where I'm from), statues of famous figures who endorsed slavery were torn down, the history of Winston Churchill and his views on race came under fire. There was a proposal to have a "race offence register" for people who commit race-related crimes. Just today, March 2021, the UK government has discouraged using the acronyn BAME (Black Asian Minority Ethnics). Sorry but this notion that Europe doesn't talk about race is absolutely false.

@@cherriepie No sh*t George Floyd's death managed to spark conversations on race around the world. The problem is not about France and UK not having any, but about how late the race talks take to become prominent. Being able to talk about race in 2020 is not an achievement. It's the bare minimum.
