How Games Get Grenades Wrong - Loadout

Most games and movies get grenades wrong. Whether it’s tactically cooking a frag in Call of Duty, throwing grenades back in Battlefield, or the huge fireballs we see in blockbusters like Commando, games and movies have totally exaggerated the humble hand grenade.
While there is a grain of truth in how games and movies depict the handheld explosive, the vast majority of depictions blow its impact out of proportion, so where does the truth end and the action movie trope begin?

Grenades dont bother me anywhere near as much as shotguns. A shotgun can still pepper a target up to 80meters yet games make them inaccurate passed 20meters. Demolition ranch did an episode showing this.
@fireaza

20 meters is WAY too generous of an estimate. I'd say most games turn the blast of a shotgun from "insta-gib" to "tickle from a new-born kitten" at around the 5 meter mark.

On the "throwing grenades to make enemies run" point: I read a Vietnam memoir called Hill 488 where a US platoon was surrounded and running out of ammo so they through rocks (it was night time) to make the NVA think a grenade landed near them and run out of cover where the US soldiers would have an easier shot.

Something else you missed, the physics of the throw itself. Many games portray that they have physics like a baseball. They don't bounce. They thud. If you throw one at dry wall, its not bouncing around the corner and into the room, its either going to go into the dry wall, or falling to the ground roughly where it hit.

What I found most interesting was that the Soviet army had multiple fuses available for their grenades with delay times from 10 seconds down to 0. My understanding was that they would put the 0 second fuses in grenades and leave them behind when moving from a position, hoping that enemy soldiers would pick them up and try to use them.

During my time in the military I rated expert in the use of all types of grenade. One thing a lot of people don't realize is the weight. It's difficult, to safely use a grenade, especially as by the time you decide to use one, you're likely already exhausted. The scariest thing about grenades is that one of your buddies might not throw it far enough away from you.

And the "potato mashers" were LARGE so you could see when they were thrown which cuts down the reaction time too. There was a US Marine who was breaching a house in Fallujah when an Insurgent threw an old Russian F1 "pineapple" grenade down a staircase at him. He had played on an all-star baseball team in high school, so he saw the grenade and caught it in mid-air. He then IMMEDIATELY threw it back up the stairs. The distance between him and the Insurgent was around 5 to 6 meters (think yards for my American brethren). That is the ONLY case I have heard about a return throw in modern war.

"it did happen" means: " a few of those times it was tried, it actually did work", all the other instances getting reduced to ugly heaps of gore. I mean, If you are pinned down in a foxhole, and a grenade lands at your feet, you might be motivated to pick it up and throw it somewhere else. How often you will succeed is anyones guess, and when the next war correspondent finds the bloody mess that was you, how is he gonna tell what happened, and that you actually tried something cool/desperate? So there is a huge bias towards those that lived to tell the tale. These things are absolutely vicious. What rarely is depicted in games is, that they can easily kill you through a dry wall, aka, next door. Cooking? no, thanks.

Exactly, also on how much strength you need to throw a Grenade. Throwing the two that I did in Basic it’s like trying to chuck a shot put. They even told us to not shot put it and to throw it hard as far as you could. They’re heavy for a throwing object and you can easily throw out your arm as most of the time the actual blast radius is larger than you can throw it.

I’ve thrown grenades in my mandatory military service. The “pineapple” grenade is used strictly in “defensive” mode when you have a very solid (or entrenched) barrier because the fragments fly up to 200 meters and the grenade itself is 600 grams - you have to be very strong to throw it more than 25 meters. The grenades typically you use in advancing forward combat are lighter “offensive” grenades that are not made of such solid casing and throw frags only up to 5-10 meters, the idea being you throw a grenade to disorient and probably wound the enemy when you advance towards them and they are not entirely exposed (like hiding in a trench, or behind tree, etc).

From a US Solider perspective you actually do say "Frag Out" or "Grenade Out". They're also heavy. Not super heavy, but heavy enough that they tell you not to "Shot-Put it" and it does feel like you will dislocate your arm when throwing it. Lastly there is a casualty radius from the concussive explosion itself that will kill you almost instantly even if no shrapnel hits you. (Basically standing within a certain meter range of the grenade it'll rupture your brain)

Funny thing is cooking grenades and throwing grenades back are intrinsically linked to one another. Early version of the Mills Bomb had a much slower fuse, which gave the resupinates ample time to react, and this is where you get battlefield reports of individuals throwing the grenades back at their attackers. And such this is where soldiers started to "cook" grenades in order to prevent their targets from being able to react. And because of how dangerous this was, the fuse times were later change to better reflect how how quickly individuals can react.

Interesting video. Several years ago I watched a video where a veteran was explaining how when he severed, at one point they were training the local military to fight for themselves (I really can't remember the conflict). They used to have grenades ready to go in one location but soon realised that these grenades were being pinched. The stolen grenades would end up in enemy hands and were used against them. To combat this, the fuses inside the grenades were secretly changed to be virtually 0 secs and everyone was made aware not to use these particular grenades, except for the local military. Whoever the thief was, he came back, pilfered them, and passed them on. Then, during a firefight, as the enemy were about to throw the grenades - booom...the grenades exploded in their hands. I tried searching for this story online but can't find it. For some reason I am thinking this happened to the British in Malaya...

Vietnam had incidents like this. Both the Russians and the Americans also left behind sabotaged 7.62 munitions that would explode when fired. So if you picked any up from retreating soldiers, you could have your rifle explode in your hands. To this day you still aren't supposed to buy 7.62 rounds from foreign countries because the risk of Salvaged munitions could result in this happening to you. Rare, but not a lottery I'd want to win

One of the grenades' properties that is not often mentioned or seen in video games is how it's trajectory changes mid air. Speaking from experience, if a grenade is in mid air when the lever is knocked off of it, then the grenade (due to Newton's third law) will change trajectory opposite of the one the lever took. Aiming grenades over long distances is almost impossible due to this, unless you manualy remove the lever or the grenade lands before the lever detaches.

@Patrick B The Roman Empire was for a brief period of time ruled by two equal emperors, but it was still viewed by the people of the time as a single political entity. The division into "Western" and "Eastern Roman Empires" (Byzantines) is a modern concept. The Byzantines never thought of themselves as anything but Roman, and every other nation of the time, even their enemies, agreed with that sentiment. The Byzantine Empire was the Roman Empire. Besides, the capital of the Roman Empire was officially moved to Constantinople by the Roman emperor Constantine the Great (the capital of the "Western Roman Empire" was in Mediolanum or Ravenna for the most part). That would make the "Eastern Roman Empire" the true continuation of the Roman Empire.

My marine buddy recommends kicking away grenades to keep them away from your head. They were taught to do this with a specific type of foxhole that's designed to catch them, but you still have to run away after that because of the wide blast radius Indirect weapons, from grenades to launchers to artillery are particularly susceptible to windage and calculation error, so they aren't very accurate. While their purpose on an individual level may be to engage enemies in entrenched positions, their role in the larger unit is in fact to encourage them to move to where someone else can engage them with a more accurate weapon. Machine guns serve the opposite purpose, discouraging enemies from exposing themselves by changing positions. When both tactics are combined, it forces the enemy to make an impossible decision: Move into machine gun fire or stay put until indirect gets zeroed in?

I've been told a first person account about grenade cooking, by a long time family friend who was a Comando officer in Angola during the portuguese colonial war in the 60s and 70s. It was commonplace for more experienced soldiers within the Comando forces to cook the grenades for just under 2 seconds, then throwing it in a high arc, This would usually result in the grenade exploding at or close to head/chest height, thus enhancing the fragmentation effect of defensive grenades (with ball bearings inside the shell). This makes it less effective to get down prone to avoid catching shrapnel, as it would expose more surface area. Thus making the most efficient way to avoid bullets (laying prone) highly likely to result in taking shrapnel. Remember this was a war fought in jungles with vegetation that made it hard to get clean shots on the enemy, hence frags were a massive source of enemy casualties.

I want to start an explosives revolution. It's time we start treating explosives with the respect they deserve, and realistic grenades are only the beginning. Back before the days of video games and CG effects, film makers were limited to practical effects for their explosions. This meant they had to set off actual explosives to get the right look. However, actual explosives are, unsurprisingly, quite dangerous. So instead film makers would use low pressure fuel explosions: essentially they would squirt some gas mist into the air and light it on fire. This creates the distinctive fireball we now see just about everywhere in movies and games (as most video games model their explosions off of the ubiquitous movie effect rather than the real thing). This small, swirling fireball that dissipates in two seconds and leaves everything outside of its fiery perimeter unscathed is not at all what an actual high pressure explosive looks like. Luckily, you're on KZbin, and you can find plenty examples of bombs and rockets exploding, but I'll provide a brief description anyway. First, rather than a swirling fireball there is a flash. Following this flash is the actual damage dealer of the explosive: the massive shockwave. Finally, there should be a huge plume of smoke, dust, and raining debris that will linger in the air for several minutes, not several seconds. Given the incredible state of modern special effects and video game rendering, I think it's time we start using actual, realistic, and much more deadly explosives in our pop media. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Yeah, the concussive force from the explosion can pop your eardrums on its own, that can be a permanent hearing loss but loud noises also damage the hairs that are part of how we hear. However, the choice between becoming deaf and dead is pretty clear most of us will choose deaf. If you're lucky most of the shrapnel and blast is deflected over you because you're so close to the ground.

We threw a few grenades in basic training. Everyone is very intense and the explosions are very underwhelming. You don't see your own throws but watching others from the bunker windows is where the underwhelming comes into play. Although you did hear shrapnel hit the roof now and again. It depends if the gases from the explosion ignite or not. Sometimes it combusts like an afterburner and creates a clear flash, sometimes not. U.S hand grenades are filled with a mixture of RDX and trinitrotoluene which detonates at about 8000m/s. That is about 10 times the speed of a bullet out of an M4, so yeah it's a quick f*****g explosion!

Nice vid, though you kinda forgot to mention, that not all grenades are "frag" i.e. fragmentation grenades, which actually makes a lot of difference in the battlefield. I'm not talking about special purpose grenades, like incendiary or CS gas grenades, just about those "explosive" ones. What I mean is that not all of them have fragmentation matrices. It can be kind of confusing, since modern grenades tend to have smooth outer shell, while the actual fragmentation matrix is inside (unlike the iconic F1 "pineapple"). However, there are two main "modifications": offensive mod and defensive mod. A typical fragmentation grenade is a "defensive mod". This type of grenade holds small amount of explosives, but kills with shrapnel from the fragmentation matrix. It is called "defensive", because that's how it is supposed to be used - thrown from a secure position, like outside the window from a building, or trench, from behind a wall et c. That is because these grenades most often have larger kill radius, than the maximum throw range of even a very strong man. And you don't want to kill yourself with it too, so you need a safe spot to hide right after the throw... The "offensive mod" is the opposite. Such grenade has no fragmentation matrix, the outer shell is thin and also creates little to no shrapnel. Any shrapnel it may create comes mostly from the place, where grenade exploded (dirt, stones, concrete).Instead, it holds a lot more explosives than fragmentation grenade. .It kills with a shockwave, which is arguably worse than being killed by shrapnel. The force of the blast can basically rip apart your internal organs with little damage to your body from outside. Most often the shockwave destroys lung tissue, which causes lungs to fill with liquid, and then effectively you drown... Which is why I always laugh at those action movie scenes, where protagonists casually walk away, while a grenade (or other kind of explosives) goes off right behind their backs... Anyway, the "offensive mod" is called that, because you can use it during an open assault, i.e. throw it in the open field in the same direction you are currently moving, because it has smaller kill radius, than the maximum range of throw. I'm not up to date with modern technology, but historically there were grenades, which could serve in both roles. If I'm not mistaken, russian RGD-33 grenades were cylinder-shaped, and normally these were "offensive mods", but you could put on them additional fragmentation matrix in a form of a "sleeve", turning them into "defensive mod". Also, other things, that video games and - most often - action movies don't get right: grenades are never being transported in a ready-to-use state, that's just too dangerous. Fuzes are being transported separately, and only after reaching their destination fuzes are being screwed into actual grenade body. Another hilarious thing is people in movies trying to save themselves from the explosion in water, by diving into said water... While water would certainly brake the shrapnel pretty quick, the shockwave would kill you MORE effectively than on the ground, because of the difference in medium density. In laymans terms, grenade exploding on the ground at a set distance may leave you unharmed, but the same grenade exploding at the same distance underwater may kill you.
