This hit home. My family always judged me for playing games ever since I was little. My dad told me girls don’t play video games. I remember trying to talk to other boys about COD when I was little and they told me that girls don’t play games. I came home from school that day and my brother couldn’t wait to play COD with me. I told him I didn’t want to play and when he asked why I told him and he said that was stupid. He said he knew tons of girls who play video games and they’re all the coolest. That’s all I needed. One person to tell me that being a girl and playing video games is fine. Video games aren’t gendered. The truth was though, he made that up. He didn’t know a single girl that played video games besides me, but he said he saw how happy I was when I played, and he didn’t want that to be taken away from me. He stood up for me when my parents would complain about me wanting and playing video games. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have the love I have for video games. They keep me sane. They’re my escape and some of them teach me a lot (Like Detroit: Become Human). I know a lot people think video games are bad and they’re all just “shoot ‘em up games”. But they have no idea. Keep on playing Gamers ☺️

My family never judged me for gaming but when my life fell apart they chose to not help me. I was going to end up homeless. Instead, a friend from Xbox live drove 300 miles and picked me up, gave me a place to stay and helped me get back on my feet. before then we had never met and didn't even really like each other but were apart of the same group, now he's my best friend. I used to be depressed and I played a lot of games for distraction and It did make me feel better, eventually needed actual therapy. But for real if I had a bad day I would play assassin's creed or go on killing sprees in games, if I felt just sad I would play a happy game, lime rancher for example, it really helped me it still does.

What I’m trying to say is that a lot of people think that games cause violence and all that stuff that everyone doesn’t want to research it because they are to confident about themselves! The Skyrim hype literally is the reason I'm here. A long time ago, I was suicidal, I still have tendencies, and I suffer from severe anxiety. But when I was a young teen, playing oblivion, I hear Skyrim was coming... I was so hyped to play it and excited. I decided not to kill myself, at least until I got a shot at it... It sounds stupid but it gave me something to look forward too. Every time I feel low I look for a new game to get hyped about, to hold on for.

When I was younger, gaming got me through some sort of depression wave I had, my parents and friends were of course there supporting me, but games just helped me escape the bullies in school, the demons in my mind, and pretty much everything, I just can't thank gaming enough, although it may sound stupid, it's saved my life. Sometimes, it’s nice to just temporarily retreat from reality, escape all the bad outside and just have something you love to do. For many of us, that something is videogames, they allow us to be fully submerged in a world that differs to our own, to distract us. It’s the ultimate form of escapism. Sometimes, you come back to reality newly greatful of what you have, I for one would hate to live in the world of Metro or any of the Zombie games. A film or TV show only plays out one way, the way it’s written. A book cannot show you each and every aspect of its world. This form of entertainment isn’t limited in the way a movie, book or TV show is. You directly control an influence on the game’s world, the level of influence may vary but the way you influence the game world will differ from how anyone else does. The only limit is the hardware. When I was little, my parents got me a gameboy. It helped me escape from every fist fight they had. I met my best friend on the bus one day when I saw this kid had caught an Articuno, him showing me how to catch one seeded a friendship that lasts to this day. When he moved, we talked everyday through World of Warcraft. In highschool I was depressed and bullied. My best friend joined the military so we couldn't talk much, but I felt like I always had a friend close by when watching Markiplier and Cryotic play. Last year my little sister was murdered and everytime my girlfriend comes over and beats my ass in Smash 4 It makes me happy just to be alive. Im learning how to build games on my own now. I cant picture anything else in the world that I would rather be doing. I love your music Dan, I don't think I could get this feeling of pride In what I'm doing from anyone else.

I'll share a story with ya'll real quick: . Once upon a time a boy was born, he was healthy and fit, no issues to be found. But as he grew older his mind started acting out, sociophobia started eating his life. As a kid he had friends the illness hadn't settled in but he quickly found that normal crowds where too much for him. To add on to that he started getting bullied, a freak with issues. What better target for young kids to act out too. He started isolating himself, went to bed with tear drops running down his face. It wasn't just the bullies, that was getting to him. That the entire school would leave, left him feeling awful. He started gaming more and more, went to school an hour before left an hour after. Just to avoid feeling sore. Making his first friends online on the xbox was a dream come true he never wanted more than to be there where people didn't scorn him Life passes as it so often does and he found himself young and employed, brand new job. He worked as hard as he could whilst greeting his Co-workers, they never knowing the voice still shouting in his head. And that voice would never quit, it'd grow stronger as years passed. These days he couldn't even escape it online... He feels tired but what's a man to do except sitting down and going on as one should always do. He plays by himself now, all alone. Still thanking gaming for getting him through the worst. And these days... Well he just stick to what keeps him sane, alone or not. I've feared what would've happened if I didn't have those friends back then. I still fear people, still fear being alone but I've matured, I can get through life because I've realised just how beautiful it can be, and even with no friends by my side I'll stick around to see all of it.

this speaks to me on a spiritual level. Gaming has been my escape and inspiration. My heroes are fictional, but my drive is founded in making that fiction real. Overwatch shows me what the world could be, minecraft gave me the opportunity to build civilizations, and the music and videos of League of Legends help me aspire for greatness. I've explored worlds in games that were beyond the wildest imaginations of people, only three generations ago, been a part of the crusades, world war 2 and survived the apocalypse countless times. It's shielded me from depression when my life's been hard and given me a reason to keep going when I lost all hope in myself and those around me. It's given me an outlet for my rage and a way to meet people like I never have in reality. And it's shown me that although our world is flawed, it's not beyond help - only waiting for heroes. Without games, I would not be alive today - and because of them, I will someday change the world.

Gaming has kept me alive through the darkest nights is so true. Gaming gave me a chance to live and better myself it taught me everything from how to work robots to basic English. When speech therapy and speech classes didn't work for me when I couldn't speak at 7, video games helped me by its intricate dialog to encourage to find my literal voice. Games helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses then gave me ways to help me improve them in a good environment. I literally dont know who I would be if it werent for playing videogames. They singlehandedly made me the person I am today. Nothing else in the world matter to me more than games. I am a medically retired soldier and gaming literally saved my life. I was planning on ending it and my buddy from discord who didnt even know I was going to kill myself. Keep pestering and texting me to get on PUBG and I did and I dont regret it. He noticed I was having an issues and was not myself over the last couple of days and he literally saved my life. My mum introduced me to gaming when I was six with klonoa, toomrader, discworld, worms and parapa the rapper on the ps1. 10 years later, the PS1 is mine and I still have those games. The ps1 also got me into retro games. I am now the proud owner of every generation of PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo console, the Sega mega drive, GBA advance sp, 2ds, zx spectrum, commodore 64 and I even have a 70s hand held computer that plays naughts and crosses called a 'Merlin'

Considering video games and book were my only friends for years the line "games help us survive through the hardest times" really hits home. Video games also taught me how to socialize and make friends. Gaming brought my brother, sister and I together when we hated each other. Videos game gave me a common ground to empathize with the world and people on something that doesn't come naturally to me. I owe a lot to gaming. A lot.

INCOMING GUT SPILLAGE!... I remember when I first got really into gaming, I was a lonely kid, outcast (only just learned in Jan 2020 I had high functioning autism). smart, but not the genius kind that attracts friends. funny, but I had my dads sense of humor (yikes!), I got in a few shouting matches (me vs 15 other kids) in elementary school because I called bullshit on the "cool kids" getting people out with a bullshit tactic so they could get their real friends in to play faster. around middle school was when shit really hit the fan, I always felt that no one really wanted to be friends with me, (people would try to cut conversations short with me) and I was too awkward to be near. when my grades started to suffer by trying to focus more on making friends than learning, my parents got really upset. my dad even once threatened physical violence (he dosent even remember it but it is burned into my mind) it was then that I started self harming (scratching myself with paper clips till I bled) and tried suicide (one time was in school) in high school, i found out that someone had hidden a file in the school network files with some games on it. eventually i came into the computer lab one day to see a class mate playing the game too. that was the first time i made a friend (not like the bullet taking friend, but someone to laugh with) which was good enough for me. nowadays, videogames are one of the few things I can easily talk about without getting flustered, and am hoping once COVID blows over, to get back to school and take more of my art courses (im studying to get into the field of game artistry of concept artistry) I figured out after my autism diagnosis, that one of the reasons I loved game so much was because I was in control, there were fewer rules in games than in real life (i.e social norms are mostly tossed out the window playing some games online) you can pause games, you can step away and think before you did something, where in real life you have to be immediately in the moment, which scared me a bit since I wasn't quite as mentally fast as other people socially. anyway, as always dan, incredible job with this song, cant wait to see what's next, and am loving the beard, well done. EDIT: turns out my Asperger's diagnosis was in January 2020 not 2019, felts like ages ago

In a way, this was nice to read. It had relatable aspects- albeit with twists, as all lives would, but relatable still. It's nice to see you're still hoping in the present and haven't completely given up and have given thought to why it motivated you as such. :) Good luck with the future- and if you haven't yet stopped the harm, I recommend bringing an end to that, since it can only further burn negatives into your mind while getting you accustomed to something long-lastingly physically damaging and less averted to even more dangerous things, even if it can help in its own way in the moment itself. :p Though by the looks of it I don't think you still do that, but... just saying just in case it helps; just in case Good luck. :).

High functioning autism? Why I have only heard that in my diagnosis. Middle school is always hell. Having a major interest in one thing, wwii. No I say the best thing about pausing is the thing to save. In one reality, I murdered the bastard over a pencil and wiped out the game's populace. The other reality I saved the guy from becoming evil, stop another war and brought water back. One thing about autism is this, if one thinks the diagnosis of it is life ending or something. I bring up the point of this, you have already been living with it, now that it is known what makes you tick, let's see if we can't help not to right the clock, but know that it's about 2 minutes ahead. Autism is not a curse, it's just a matter of knowing where are the disadvantages and to love the advantages of it. Couldn't read face expressions well, but I could think of a different way to solve something because something stood out like a sore thumb to only me.

I am 28 years old now. Without games, I don't know if I would have even made it into my late teens. It's as simple as that. Games were my distraction from a difficult life, from a literal decade of bullying (since my first year of school until my last), struggling with my home life, depression, anxieties... I made some of my closest friends through gaming, and online. Ever since I got handed an NES controller and Super Mario Bros, I was hooked. I still have that NES. I still have Super Mario Bros. Still got the light gun I used for Duck Hunt, my Playstation 1, 2, 3 and 4. My game boy colour and advance. Without the games that sustained me through the years, I might never have met my wife, and moved to a new home with her and my son. I still struggle but now? Now I have something to fight for. Games still help me cope, but now it's about living, and not just survival. Thanks for putting it into words, Dan. I am nearly in tears from this! With COVID and being stuck in lockdown, all I could do was play video games and wait for my GCSE results to come out. My parents were not that happy with me spending time on my Xbox but I learnt so much more about life from video games than school has ever taught me. Being a gamer girl is quite hard these days and being told that you shouldn’t be playing certain games is wrong. I used to play all the old school video games with my brother’s and my parents didn’t like me doing it. I was bullied because I played video games that were “meant for” boys. this really hit me. almost 2 years ago my nephew died in a road accident and one of my fondest memory of him is 1. his wedding and 2. me and his brother racing on a F1 game on ps4 and i really wish i could've done it more often. and about 3 years ago i got major depression, i never had friends at school i got bullied and everything was shit but i found a BF4 community and those guys gave me more support then my parents ever did, i even gave them my home adress for when my parents would get really angry and hit me again or if i would try to commit suicide. Those guys talked me out of it all the time and they we're more like brothers. later, about a year ago, one of my friends that i met through gmod died and we all held a funeral service on gmod and to this day a monument stands on the server to honor him and what he did. Even when writing this i just feel the tears coming back and thanks to video games im still alive and i have built up the social skills to thrive with a lot of friends now. Games are not a waste of time or a unsocial thing to do, it learns you life skills and social skills that will be with you for the rest of your life. I read an article once about how the average human interacts with about 50 other humans daily but gamers interact on average with more then 200 other people a day. and still people think video games are bad.

This song really embodies how most gamers feel about games. Games aren't just a passtime for most of us, games help us cope with the terrible world we live in, the terrible minority that are louder than the majority, the fact that people don't support us because they don't agree with our coping methods. This song gives me hope that someday people will stop putting us down because we play games, that people will stop using games as a scapegoat for the bad things they caused. But sadly those people don't want to lose their scapegoat, and because of this they won't learn. Even so, we can't stop trying to improve the image of games, we can't stop trying to make the world more livable for us, and we can't stop trying to teach those who are wrong. wow, just... wow... I remember watching Dan's videos ever since a little bit before the Skyrim rap and have always been a fan of him and how passionate he is. I teared up when he made "40 Years of Gaming" but I'm not gonna lie I fucking cried harder than I expected during this one... A lot of lyrics and sentiments that are in and around this song describe almost exactly how I feel towards video games. I don't wanna bore anyone with a life story so I'll just say that without gaming... As someone who had to go to hospital visits every year it was hard for me to look forward to something. Something to try and get break from the hospital visits and try to heal my own self.
