The "viking's didn't have horns on their helmets" thing is a bit hard because there's only been one preserved helmet recovered from the viking age and it doesn't have horns. However, there have been numerous depictions of people (not just vikings) dating back to the iron age that show horned helmets. So while it likely wasn't a requirement for all vikings, it's possible that some higher-ranked warriors may have had horned helmets. It's difficult to dismiss the idea of horned helmets entirely because this feature appears in so many images from multiple cultures.
