This is pretty flawed reporting. Wilders didn't tone down his rhetoric only after he explosively gained seats in the polls. Instead, appearing more reasonable was the cornerstone of his overall strategy. With the departure of long-serving Prime Minister Rutte a large chunk of the centre-right electorate that had kept him in power was up for grabs. Hence, Wilders was incentivised from the start to appear more statesmanlike to appeal to these voters. Wilders' apparent transformation even led some commentators to nickname him Geert Milders (which by chance translates well into English). During the campaign the incumbent VVD's new party leader (Mark Rutte's successor) opened the door for a future coalition with Wilders, something Rutte had blocked since 2012. Back then, Wilders had teared up the confidence-and-supply agreement that gave that government (2010-2012) its parliamentary majority. Between 2012 and this campaign, a vote for Wilders was often perceived (or framed by his opponents) as a lost vote, as the chances of him taking part in a coalition government were negligible. This time around, the VVD seemed to have lifted its block to Wilders' participation in government. In a campaign heavily focused on immigration policy, voters flocked to the party that has consistently branded itself around its anti-immigration stances for two decades: Wilders' Freedom Party. Whether this actually leads to a government headed by Wilders, the coming months will tell.

The Netherlands is a very secular country. This is because in the past we had multiple wars because of differences of opinions about religions. For example the eighty (!) years war. Yes, we can be that stubborn. For Muslims to think they can force their religion upon us is quite naive. They migrated to the Netherlands just after we went through the second world war. The dutch were tired of wars and just wanted some peace. Muslims mistakenly took our kindness for weaknesses. I'll tell you what it means for the Netherlands: very little. He has 37 seats in a 150-seat parliament. It's the single biggest contingent but a long way from being a majority. He needs at least another 39 seats to form a government. Even if het gets it - and he may not - he'll have to make heavy concessions to other parties to get their support. And even then his party will be a minority in his own coalition. There'll be no right wing revolution in Holland anytime soon.
