Something I've been trying to figure out: I know it's BEST practice to tie the geogrid into the wall so that the dirt and wall almost becomes one unit. But lets say hypothetically the materials a person was using to make the wall couldn't tie into the geogrid, would still having the geogrid in the dirt just not attached to the wall still provide some benefit in the form of stabilizing the dirt so that it doesn't press too forcefully against the wall?

That’s a good question. It is my understanding that geogrid is anchored by the wall creating a single mass wall system. Without anchoring, you do not get the same benefit, though it would work to stabilize the material in behind. Typically if the material is not suited for geogrid, it is not engineered to be built to the height that you would need geogrid.

I am looking for an old video similar but ~4' tall compacter soils between jersey barriers, reinforced with bed sheets, barriers removed and then they stacked ~8 rows of jersey barriers on top of it - and then saturated the soil profile - still held up. Maybe from Yentar? any leads?

I would be interest to see this with good 3/4" minus stone. There were a lot of rounded stones in that sample, which are not good for compaction. Also try it using angular 3/4" clear stone with the biax grid. Then compare both stones with tri-ax grid. I use triax grid on all my patios. Let me know if you would like me to mail you some pieces to test out with.

I am already a believer in geo grid, however I dont believe that you adequately demonstrated how great the geo grid is. I believe that it was purely accidental but you had very glaringly flawed methodology. for example The first time you filled, without the geo grid. you just filled it up to 10 inches, you just compacted. that was flaw 1. You are supposed to compact every 3 to 4 inches or so to insure you get the proper compaction otherwise the base wil be too thick to compact, no matter what you use. Another example is when you then opened the box with the geogrid-less material in it, you proceeded to lay a paver on it, and when you did, it seemed to have held in place better than what you would have liked to demonstrate, so then you gave the paver a pretty aggresive wiggle causing the cave in that you were looking to demonstrate. It would have been no issue if you would have done the same thing to the second test batch, but you didnt. Like I said. I am a believer in the geo grid. I use it everytime, and i know without a doubt that its like 20X better than not going with it. I just feel like the demo was a little biased is all
