When I first got into Martial Arts several decades ago I was a massive believer in things like no touch knock outs, and pressure point fighting. These days, not so much.
Instead of critiquing his technique which has been done a million times already, I thought it might be interesting to see how he manages to get people to believe that what he does is effective.

A certain famous Thai boxer was watching a Dillman demonstration with my wife's MA teacher. He watched the little pokey finger strikes to the neck after which the student dutifully fell down. He said in a stage whisper "We do the same thing, but we hit them with our shin." /I bet sledgehammers would transmit Qi to the acupuncture points just as well.

In the 80s, before Dillman got into the ki projection bs, I remember reading some relatively good articles of his on the meaning of kata in karate. IIRC he was arguing that what was interpreted as blocks were in fact throws or soft tissue strikes. Maybe he was once genuine but he began to believe the dim mak and ki projection crap that was going around at that time - Paladin press stuff.

I mean, don't take my word for it: videos of him "demonstrating" (O the delusion of the guy!) kata are available here on KZbin... YES EXACTLY~ DILMAN WAS CLAIMING THAT HE AND HE ALONE HAD CRACKED THE MYSTERY OF KATA, THAT IT WAS ACTUALLY CODE FOR PRESSURE POINTS. THAT IT WAS NOT SIMPLE BLOCKS, KNIFEHANDS, BACKFIST AND STIKES. BUT RATHER SACRED PRESSURE POINTS WERE HIDDEN IN THE MOVES.

I was actually at this seminar and you can actually see me in this video lol I’m laughing at it now because I look really sleepy like I’m about to nod off. Dillman talked like this for about 4 hours and I think in total there was about 6 mins of “practical” work done. Do I believe in pressure points? Yeah, I don’t use them as Dillman does and I don’t believe it has anything to do with chi etc, I’ve made them work in my security work but they are very much the poison on the tip of the arrow, if your delivery system sucks then nothing will help you, if you can’t land a solid punch or earn the right to throw someone then no amount of pressure points will help you. Outcome of this seminar? I was £200 less well off and got nothing in return. I would point out I’m in no way associated with George Dillman.

I don't know about "pressure points" but I know "nerve strikes" that actually work. The upper lip and nose, both sides of the neck have nerve clusters around the major arteries, the inside of each wrist right where the little bony bump is, and the lumpy muscle in the forearm where it connects to the elbow. Try it on yourself, but don't hit too hard.

@@ambulocetusnatans Here’s a free lesson from a street hypnotist. Initiate the gesture and mannerisms of an honest attempt at a handshake. Because, although a handshake is a complex motor pattern with many parts, our minds think of it as one thing. Our unconscious fills in the details, as a handshake has become an automatic gesture. But.. Interrupt the handshake half way thru (on the half beat) with a strike, as will send the target of influence into a state of temporary confusion, this will narrow their choice of responses and create a bigger reaction time gap. An attack on the half beat from an offer to “fist bump” touch gloves or high 5 may also work

I encountered a handful of characters claiming Dillman type abilities while training in the UK in the 80s and 90s. They were almost always rather earnest young men who had never really experienced real violence, and they were simply passing on what someone else had shown them without testing it. A lot of the "traditional Japanese medicine" and supposed control techniques fell into the same category. Most of them were quite surprised when they encountered polite resistance. It's not just martial artists that are vulnerable to this nonsense. Reiki was ridiculously popular for a while. Writing this, a name popped into my head. Russell Stutley...... Now that's a man who isn't well-meaning, or the victim of simply believing something he was once shown.

Several years ago, when I was super into martial arts, I purchased a George Dillman training video. I was so impressed, I purchased an in-person training by one of his students. During the training, when the instructor asked for a volunteer, I thought the volunteer looked familiar. I went back and watched the video again and it was one of the "volunteers" in the George Dillman video. He was clearly not a volunteer. Feels like a gut punch to realize something you've been training hard for is a scam. At least it didn't damage anything but my pride. I also trained for years to condition my fits into weapons only to discover it caused severe arthritis. There's just too many magic tricks in martial arts that take away from the techniques that work.

I met the guy in the 90's. I liked the explanations of kata moves and the pain compliance techniques since I have a Karate background. The pressure point stuff was interesting as I had already met som people talking about Dim Mak and such. I'm, however, quite pragmatic and I don't believe some magic energy flow being part of it and the science jargong makes me cringe. As some instructor once said: "Everything is a pressure point if you hit it hard enough". Since I shared the same train with him after the seminar I got to listen to a lot of storys and ended up with some free t-shirts and books...So there's that. I think he, at least then, believed in the things he taught. I did train with some of his students (former students?) a couple of years later and they told me he had gone off the deep end with the "no touch" BS. .....And I have hardly ever worn the t-shirts.

So, I have 15 years exp in Japanese JuJitsu and dabbled in a few other arts too. Also strength trained a long time and developed several joint problems now I've hit my 30s (problematic elbows and stuff like that) so I had to re-evaluate how I train. I approached my sensei about it, and it turned out he actually knew much about Qi Gong and Tai Chi and so I began to learn some of the movements and dropped the strength training etc. Not only has my joint health improved massively from the slow movements, but my leg strength has increased massively alongside my endurance and vitality. When I started to notice the effects (at about 6 months in the training, am now a couple years in) I asked Sensei honestly what he thought about Chi/Ki/Qi and he said this: "The ancient ways were created by people who realised the good of the exercises without the scientific understanding to explain them. The energy exercises and growth of Ki, can be scientifically explained as training balance, breathing and patience which enhances many aspects of strength for a martial artist. At the very least, regular practice clears old air from the lungs, makes the lymph nodes do their job properly, stimulates the metabolism, strenghens muscles and ligaments and most importantly focuses the mind". All of these benefits were described by the ancients as Ki or Chi or Qi depending on what place of origin your chosen art originates from. I train these exercises daily, and highly recommend them to any martial artist, but remember there is no magic, only science!

You weren't speaking to anyone that actually can manipulate qi then. That's laughable, sorry. You've been misled by someone who doesn't know any better. Qi is a VERY real force. Can you knock someone out without touching them? No. But there are many uses for it, especially healing. If you actually want to know and train THE TRUTH , I suggest reading The Way of Energy by Lam Kam Chuen, The Complete System of Self Healing by Stephen Chang and Energy Work by Robert Bruce. Once you learn to feel Qi, you'll KNOW undeniably that Qi is a real force. I also suggest The Gateway Hemisync system. All those benefits are true of Qi Gong, but that's literally the most fundamental level of it. The actual energy work is the entire point, hence why Qi Gong translates to ENERGY WORK.

There's an OLD story I read years ago about a native Australian Elder who was once asked by an anthropologist: "can you do telepathy?". His answer:" Yup". Anthropologist: " Do you still do it?". he does talk slick, but thats because he's been doing this since the 1960's, another reason it looks effortless because it is. he's using about 1/4% force when demonstrating these techniques because if you hit full force, exactly like he said, you can snap someones neck. the kata he referenced are all from shorin-ryu kenpo brought to america by Ed Parker. as a yellow belt we learn these forms, but not until we've studied for years, 12 in my case, did we learn how they actually work when used in combat. add in kyu-sho to the techniques we've drilled for a decade previous and immediately everything clicks.

There is always a certain amount of "going with it" in any martial arts demo. Even quite series people can convince themselves of all kinds of silly stuff. I recall one of the instructors, at my first martial arts school back in the early 80s, telling us that if you where caught in a headlock you pinch the back of the guy's thigh. No magic, no pressure point...just the pain of pinching the sensitive skin on the thigh... And this was at a serious kick-boxing school that produced a lot of full contact champions. About the whole ''pressure points''-thing: There's an actual technique, called ''acupressure'' which is used by trad. Asian medicine for chiropractic therapy. It's the same concept like acupuncture, minus the use of needles. Basically they put pressure on specific points, stimulating the nerve ends to lessen chronic pain, like from arthritis or migraines. It's mostly used in combination with trad. massage techniques. Theoretically, you can use this also to inflict pain, by pressuring a specific nerve end. BUT, you would have to be extremely precise, down to the inch, in order to hit the right ''pressure point'', which is practically impossible in a real-life fight scenario. Also, it has nothing to do with mystical energies or whatever BS Dillman is claiming...

@@EnglishMartialArts I looked into mr Dillman and I might have found the three people who influenced his infamous bullshido, despite the fact that outside of this, Dillman seemed to be respected by and even worked with some legit karate figures of the time. So anyways, when he’s around 18 or 19 he meets Harry G Smith, who was a karate master but also a CIA agent involved in the Bay of Pigs and the Phoenix Program among other paramilitary activities. Perhaps he picked up something about psychology and how to weaponize it from him? He also worked with Seiyu Oyata and Hohan Soken, who were both karateka that dabbled in Chinese “kung fu” and “pressure point” fighting styles. In fact Soken supposedly was an heir of “lost karate techniques” that he wanted to preserve in the world. And Oyata has a literally copyrighted martial arts system now that includes proprietary techniques (sounds familiar). I would hazard a guess that through his experience with these gentlemen, Dillman was eventually able to put together what we see now as his own “martial arts system” along with the gimmicks we’re critiquing him for.

I feel like I've made this comment a half a dozen times before but: I really feel the quackery embodied in this video is present to a lesser extent in every McDojo out there. There is always a gap in skill and knowledge between the instructor and the student, and anyone with a commercial interest is going to exploit that gap to keep the students coming back. You don't actually know what your instructor knows or how effective his methods are, until you are called upon to test them. That's one major advantage of HEMA over the eastern martial arts; no one can claim to be a master its understood that its a reconstructed art of limited effectiveness in a modern context; and I think that's a lot better than the false sense of security that comes with being a black belt in some sportified combat system.

I feel chi, ki, any energy based thing is misunderstood bc chi is not some bullshido thing. What I mean is that chi is energy that is chain linking energy from the ground to the strike. So using your hips and breathing to make a powerful punch. Idk if I'm explaining this without sounding like a random guy that believes bullshido, bc I don't believe that stuff works but they use a term that know one really understands even tho that word may just mean energy. All chi is is one's ability to make there energy, aka punch ability, more powerful by using kinetic chain linking and using that force of energy against someone. So if I were to push you to the ground in anyway that's me using my chi, energy, against you. And I'm talking about stuff like bjj and and grappling art. There using chi, energy, of oneself to use on the other person. Idk if I'm explaining how I feel the best way but all I'm saying is that I don't think by waving your hands can control someone. You need to wrestling someone to control them and that's were chi or any energy based stuff is meant to be. It's just a term that means energy.

What does qi literally mean? Breath, including the energy you get from food. I've seen a lot of effective "Qi-based" techniques that came down to nutrition and proper breathing. The language Chinese medicine uses is different, but regulating your breathing so you get extra power out of your strikes, lift heavier things, don't get gassed, keep your focus under stress, and perform better because you eat right all work. Heck, I've had Aiki and CMA teachers say I had excellent Qi because I was good at catching catapulted students before they ran into walls and had a basic awareness of where people were in a crowded gym. Did they mean I had a Mystical Third Eye? No, just a little relaxation, awareness and appreciation of distance which came from years of classes in garages and welding shops where running into sharp metal edges or acetylene tanks was always a danger. Nothing Woo-Woo about it. An old friend who has been doing Itto-Ryu Kenjutsu for over fifty years can do some amazing cutting and has no trouble beating arrogant guys a third his age in randori. He talks about "bringing the Earth up" to make the cut. Does he literally mean that? No, but it's a shorthand that other people who can do the same things understand and is useful for training. And when he raises up his sword and gets in a do cut which would slice you in half he says he "leads their Ki." Once again, it's a term that encompasses how he gets and holds their attention, redirects it, catches them at the right time (generally on the inhale) and a few other things. He isn't saying that there's some Mysterious Life Energy involved. Once again, it's a useful training term that helps students do a number of complex things without getting lost in details. But no-touch knockouts? That's bull droppings

Obviously, as stated by EnglishMartialArts here, some areas of the human body are more sensitive than others (throat, solar plexus, growing, possibly kidney, and that's about it), but everyone know these, martial artist or not, and these are quite different to the myriad of supposed "pressure points" Dillman and other fools say there are, points supposed to add like magical off switches, which is complete and utter nonsense.

Interestingly acupuncture died out completely in China as it was considered ineffective. It was officially removed from the teachings of the Imperial Medical Institute in the early 1800s. It was revived by Mao in a propaganda attempt to prove to his people that there was actually a plan to keep them healthy, and to prove to the rest of the world that Chinese Medicine was valuable. It may well do something, but there is no real scientific evidence that poking tiny pins into chi pathways to unblock them is actually a thing.

I usually hate doing multiple comments. But just this once I'm going to indulge myself. The reason so many martial arts are so shite these days is, in my humble opinion, because so many martial artists who teach, have never been in a bloody fight. NOT sparing. A REAL fight, with blood in the eye and hate in the heart. When some bugger REALLY means you ill. The art I practice goes way back to the Age of the Country at War in feudal Japan, where if it didn't work, you died. Of course, it's been modified since then, ( and by some schools, not for the better), but the principle stays the same: "Get out of the way. STRIKE. ....then apply a lock or a take down. And if it gets blocked, do something else. Above all, don't freeze".

If you have an answer other than "yes, deeming life unworthy is a dangerous idea" then I have nothing more to say to you.

@@Rasgonras No, I wouldn't go to as far as "unworthy life" philosophy. Just "unfit for certain aspects of life" philosophy.
