An English couple tries to get a child for some years but are unsuccessful so they apply for an adoption. After a long tedious process of bureaucracy they get a german baby. The first year everything is in order, the kid grows and grows but at age two he never said a word. The couple gets alarmed by that and try everything to get him to talk but with no avail. At his 9th birthday they serve apfelstrudle and after eating it the kid says: "Zis Apfelstudel was a bit stale!". The parents are totally baffled by that and say: "HANS you can talk! Why didn't you say anything all the years?" and Hans says: "Up until now everything was satisfactory."

Warum hast du all die Jahre nichts gesagt?" Hans sagt: "Bisher war alles zufriedenstellend".

@@playbrrr475 Concerning how British tabloids deal with the topic of Germany the German magazine "Der Spiegel" once commented that the British undoubtedly have a lot of if somewhat special humor. But their humor obviously completely disappears when the topic is Germany. I think that hits the mark. For many Germans Nazis and WW2 are banned from any kind of humorous treatment. Especially if the jokes are bad and just reflecting the conceptions on Germans of our former enemies. They didn't make their jokes about us out of a humorous mood. In the US only Germans and German language and culture were explicitly qualified as enemy (during WW1), no other ethnicity or culture was ever treated like them. All that despite the US public was well acquainted with Americans of German descent and knew very well that they were an integral part of US democracy. But US media and similar institutions are used to excessively negative opinions till now. If it's extreme it's justified by - it's just fun, not serious. But there is a clear pattern. It seems they just don't want to get mentally out of the trenches of WW1.

@@playbrrr475 We actually did it - in 1970. My grandfather, my father and I as a kid watched a not so serious foreign film on TV. It played during WW2 and there were some foolish Nazis but also other Germans in the film. My grandfather was deported into a concentration camp in 1933 - for 4 months - because he had complaint about the new Nazi government. No wonder my grand father and father hated Nazis. No problem to laugh about them. But our perception of the film and the perception of viewers in some other countries might have been fundamentally different.

my english skills aren`t the best but I try to translate the joke from German to Enlish. I am sorry for any error. :) A Chinese, a Russian, a German, an American and a Turk are sitting in a train. The Russian suddenly stands up opens the window takes bottles of vodka out of his bag and throw them out of the window. The others are watching him in surprise. He shrugs his shoulders and says “In Russia we have so much vodka, we don't need it.” and sits down. Stand the Chinese up takes bags full of rice and throw them out of the window. When he notices the others watching him he says “We have so much rice in China, we don't need it.” and sits down. Stand the American up, empty his pockets and throw all his money out of the window. Turning around to the others he says “We have so much money in the USA, we don't need it.” When the German start to slide nervously back and forth on his seat the Turk give him a stern look and sais “Don't even think about it.”

yes, it only makes sense with "Wehrmacht"... :-) (and i've never heard "granddad" but "grandpa"...) was ist die Aufgabe der deutschen Bundeswehr? den Feind solange aufzuhalten bis militärische Kräfte eingreifen können... (what's the assignment of the german Bundeswehr?

The funniest thing was the lady at the end: "OK. I think we've got to go." poking fun at how bad the jokes were. The jokes were just terrible or did anyone - no matter your nationality - actually do more than maybe smirk slightly at one or two of them when watching this privately for themselves when he told his jokes? Like, the whole scenario is weird and unnatural to begin with. "Hey, random person on the street, here's an unfunny joke. Laugh now!". Most people wouldn't really laugh at bad jokes out of nowhere. Others just fake laugh to meet the expectation. Germans don't. Generally, I'd rather get one honest smirk from a stereotypical German than a hundred fake laughs from someone else.

+facocassady, actually it's more an American stereotype of the Polish that they are supposed to be dumb. This idea is not that very common in Germany. In Germany it's more the stereotype that a Pole would pinch everything which is not screwed to the ground. Lots of Polish jokes here are about this stereotype and present the Poles rather as quite clever and ingenious (when it comes to stealing) than dumb. I'm sometimes tired of the stereotypes because it makes a joke predictable. For me it's wittier if a joke works with a funny surprise, an unpredictable twist or a failure.

Honestly your channel is THE BEST resource for learning German. And your superb growth in subscriptions is testament to that. I am learning like this, Rosetta stone first Then I start with your videos (watching these instead of other random videos on youtube) Pimsleur or Michel Thomas next And then I'll do some sessions on italki Eventually I plan to stay in Germany for about 2 weeks. To really immerse in the language. But your channel is invaluable.

One from my youth. A Dutch joke. Many involve Belgians and Germans. A Belgian, a Dutchman and a German enter a magic swimming pool. Before jumping in you can make a wish for what will be in the pool. The Belgian goes first, yells "French Fries!" and makes a few happy rounds in his french fries The Dutchman goes, yells "Beer" The pool fills with beer and the Dutchman makes his rounds, all happy. The German also wants to jump, slips and yells "Scheiße" ...

German people seem to find it difficult laughing at jokes referring to their past. Few of them thought the joke about the occupation was funny. That must be the reason why Germans are said to lack humor: humor implies being able to laugh about yourself. But we shouldn't generalize, there is a woman on the video laughing heartily at jokes about her country and also a guy who says he understands them because he doesn't have the same kind of humor as most Germans. I wish there were more people like him in Germany.

That's because we learn a great deal about WW2 in school, I doubt schools in other countries treat this dark chapter of German history in quite as much detail. We are very aware of our past and to us the death of so many innocent people is no laughing matter. If that qualifies for having no sense of humour so be it.
@futuredays1522

I didn't even get the joke. In order to understand a joke you have to get the social clues contained in it. If you don't get them it isn't funny. I'm German and I didn't get it either. But when they mentioned it I understood the joke and laughed. We German tend to think about things a lot and we overthink things. That might be one issue why some jokes went right over their heads. They just didn't get the punch line.

+Easy German Germans differe a lot in humor from state to state and from big cities to rural areas. Here in rural bavaria we have very black humor without taboos, and enjoy good jokes about ourselves, even if it's about World War 2. This is also the reason why british humor is a huge thing in Bavaria from city to countryside, because the brits have the best humor about themselves and others, especially politically incorrect humor is loved here. Since logically you go to big cities for interviews you have to consider that many germans, especially in big cities have a different character on camera broadcasted to the whole world than in private. I've been asked political questions, some serious and some humorous and even i who comes from a german farm automatically hesitated to say my real opinion on camera. If you're german you probably understand why. After all, there are american and british comedians who wouldn't be allowed to have a show here because it would be considered hate-speech, eventhough it's humor.
