As it is illegal in Germany to wash your car outside a qualified facility (there are self washing stands with power washers around that qualify as such), the dirty water has to be treated before going into the sewage. The car washing facilities in my neighborhood all have a relatively high quality water recycling management. The most modern one uses less than 10% fresh water for any car wash, more than 90% is recycled dirt water. BTW if you would wash your car on your own ground you could get fined into the 10K‘s € range

Next time you should try a "Waschstraße". You can stay within your car during the washing

These machines are just so cool. I kinda geek out over what's essentially a huge robotic machine with spinning brushes that cleans your car. They're just really cool to watch, newer ones even come with multicolour LED lights!

Washing your car in the streets or on your driveway became illegal from town to town, municipality after municipality in the 1970s when people and then the lawmakers became aware of the various domestic causes of pollution. Black water goes into the sewage plants but surface water ( rain) runs through a different system underground in most places and is discharged into the rivers or the sea. Detergents, oil, waxes and dust with asbestos from the braking system in those days caused brooks and rivers to foam literally when it was "car-washing day", Saturday mostly. If you want to wash your car, construction or farmyard machinery on your land you must do it on a concrete or tarmac surface and have a commercial oil separator.

I love the importance placed on the environment here. Also love the reusable (instead of recyclable) glass and plastic bottles here! Makes so much sense, a much better system than the US.

Fun fact: That sticky stuff on your car when you park under a tree is neither sap nor pollen. It's actually the feces of mites, which live on the tree. So... that's fun to know, right? :D

A lot of car washes in the US are drive through (also automated) but you stay in the car the as it pulls you along.

We have them too in Germany (and the rest of Europe I think). The ones where the car stands are usually a bit cheaper and don't wash as thoroughly as the pull-through ones.

The biggest car wash in the world is in Stuttgart Germany. 400 cars at the same time 100 employees
