Well that was... damning. There's been few games played this year where the gulf in tactical quality was as vast as it was last night. With Toni Kroos in particular given the freedom of the pitch to dictate play - Scotland's sytem was broken from the offest.

Honestly, the naivety of Scotland to half heartedly press Kroos, leave an acre of space in the middle for Wirtz, and be that poor at dealing with route 1 attacking. I don’t think I saw Scotland head away a cross. I mean you cannot be that bad off the ball. I was honestly baffled at the ease Mittelstadt and Kimmich just lofted balls into the box and consistently found a German header.

Presumably because the defenders all got told to "stay compact", so if one of the midfielders pressed kroos then you just have a even bigger gap between the lines. So they kind of stayed in limbo trying to close down passing lanes but against someone the caliber of kroos, give him space and he will put the pass through your legs. This game is 100% on the manager, the scoreline if anything is flattering, should have been a 6 or 7-0.

@@slipnemesis every scottish player playing last night has heard the command to "put him under". they were all too busy being mesmerised by Kroos to put him under. that's because they are amateur and the manager has no idea what he is doing. As a Liverpool supporter I was reminded of the 20/21 Champions League campaign. That was the season we had a massive injury crisis, no senior CBs were available and several senior midfielders were also out and we played Real Madrid and Kroos did this exact thing to us. I remember watching those 2 matches and yelling “why are you giving Toni Kroos this much time on the ball!!” We lost badly over 2 legs and it’s all I could think about while watching Scotland be torn to shreds. I think the best thing to take away from that game was that it showed the new referee rules in action and perfect use of VAR. Quick and clear corrections and decisions and a reduction in complaining from teams. I don't think that there is an argument about any of the VAR decisions, even if the red card might seem harsh to Scotland fans at first, there was no other reasonable decision here.

Excellent point. I didn’t hear about the rule that only captains can appeal to the ref after the match and now you mention it, it did make for much better viewing. Pretty fair wrap up, Adam. TBH I winced when I saw the team sheet. It is long established that Scotland's best midfield 2 is Gilmour and McGregor, for the precise reason that they can actually build together taking the ball off the centre backs, and that McT in there simply can't. We found an excellent position for McT (who I love) during the qualifiers, after trying him in the centre of midfield with poor results for years, and then I think Clarke choked a bit sticking him in there for this big game. All through the match the defenders were pressed and panicked when they had the ball and ended up in trouble or lumping it and NO ONE showed for it from midfield. Gilmour is the absolute key to Scotland having any chance of even relieving the pressure of wave after wave of attacks, regardless of whether the team can actually build chances from it. Criminal not to play him imho.

@@yungdkay1008 Whatever the system was it can't have involved any marking. The german attackers had miles of space standing in between the midfield and the defence the entire game and no-one picked them up. Zero press, zero marking - sit back and let them take free shots from the edge of the penalty area seemed to be the system we were employing. We had 5 at the back yet our defence was constantly getting flanked. Woeful performance of a negative tactic. The entire team was lost at sea for the full 90 minutes. 5-1 flattered us. Tony Kroos had 101 completed passes, Scotland had 192.

German co-presenter Christoph Kramer (the guy with the concussion in the 2014 WC final) said (according to his journalist colleague) "It's going to be 3:0 at halftime" after 17 seconds because there was no hard pressing from Scotland and if you don't press Kroos, you die. I'd noticed that they weren't doing that, but now I understand why they couldn't from their system. It is also slightly "unfair" to have Rüdiger, Kimmich, Kroos plus the two wingers be able to play long-ass pass to the other side of the pitch. No wonder they were able to get the Scots into hectic shifts.

honestly if you don't take out Kroos by applying pressure, it's like not guarding Kyrie or Luka tightly, you are gonna get ripped apart. Toni is old, if you get up in his face and physical he will not be able to do his thing and his accuracy suffers at least a little. I mean the others had a good day too, but that is really the only thing Scotland did badly wrong. They could have real hurt them, but no hustle no chance

Hey did you noticed that Toni could play 102 passes and just 1 failed? Highest Passqoute from over 99% i have ever seen. For me hes the best player in the world on this position. Of course he had no pressure, but the ball needs also to arrive. Hes totally underrated. 5 times Champions Leage Winner in 6 years i guess. Or maybe im not objectiv because im german. 😅 Thanks for explaning the tactic so good. This reminds me a little to 2014 against brasil. So dear Scottland. Head's up. It could be worst. And the german team with the good young Manager is the best german Team since 2014. And sry to say. England didnt look very well today. With this defemce taktik they cannot beat Spain, France, Italy or Germany. Cheers 🇩🇪

@9:31 Che doesn't even jog towards Kroos... Che should've been running his guts out first half, with the intent of gassing out at the hour mark ready to be subbed. He didn't. it was by no means the only issue, but game 1. starting as lone striker, you must run yourself ragged first half. get a breather half time, then use whats left in the tank for 15mins then expect to get hooked for another stiker at 60mins.. Next game it will probably be the other way round.

Honestly, you can't stop kross's crosse's. Even if you mark him aggressively he will always find that one sneaky cross that will turn the match around and that is what he does for Real madrid. The guy sits back on the german side which is even difficult to mark, as the attacking midfielders and strikers have to also concentrate on taking the ball and scoring goals they cannot effectively mark kroos. He has been doing this in Real Madrid, No hard feelings, Scotland is not strong than bayern Munich or Manchester united or barca these teams couldn't stop kroos then how can Scotland??

As a Scotland supporter, we knew we were done as soon as the lineup was announced. We went for a single (defensively questionable) 6 against a team that exploits the gap between the midfield and defense. It was obvious that we'd do really badly at handling Germany defensively just thru numbers, and that we'd struggle to play out, given fewer options and without Gilmour's press-resistance. Instead we had a midfield diamond, something we haven't played, hence defensive disorganisation, and all because Clarke is in love with Christie for some reason. So the problem started in picking an obviously inappropriate system, but Clarke seems to be getting away with no criticism. Clarke himself seems to be claiming he was playing 4D chess, but the players were too stupid to understand it. Imagine the pelters Southgate would get in this situation.. but Clarke is bullet-proof and no one wants to say it was his mistake.

I liked your analysis of the game strategies and can see how Kroos unhinged the Scottish game plan. But there was a more fundamental reason why Scotland was so horrible. When a Scottish player had the ball (a rare event), there were two Germans on him immediately. When a German player had the ball, there were were three of four Scottish players backing off.

The problem's the system, right. A single 6 against Germany is insane as it leaves the defense horribly exposed. Then make that 6 McGregor, who's not really a 6 and never has been, and Germany can quite easily (due to their quality) bypass our midfield and attack the back 3 at will. The defense is used to having 2 sitters in front of it, so suddenly the learnt knowledge of how to handle different situations, who's marking who, when players are handed off is all out the window. Because we have one 6. McGinn and McTominay are locked into defensive positions, so their ability to press is hindered. Christie is stuck in there to float around and be pointless. And McGregor is literally one of the worst 6s I've ever seen. He wants to be an 8 all the time, but lacks recovery pace and generally just jogs around even when chasing back as in this clip. Clarke set us up to win the areas of the pitch that didn't matter, and left us horribly exposed in the areas that Germany obviously wanted to be in, i.e. the gap between our midfield and defense. And not only that, we stayed that way for 90 minutes, like Clarke couldn't see the problem that we all was before the match even kicked off! This was probably the most inept managerial performance I've ever seen, and Clarke doesn't seem to be getting any criticism for it at all.

The main thing that struck me was how scared Scotland were playing from the moment the match started - they conceded over two thirds of the pitch immediately, and gave the ball back to the Germans from their own third of the pitch constantly. Even worse than that, when they were 2-0 down and getting absolutely hammered, they just stuck to their plan and setup. To maintain that plan is the manager effectively saying 'this is fine', and that's just so disappointing. Get Gilmour and Shankland in the starting lineup, and have a go at the opposition. Hickey, Patterson, Ferguson and Doaks are sorely missed in this team but it still has enough quality in it to look like it belongs here - so long as they actually attempt to play back at their opponent and don't cower on the outskirts of their penalty box.
