Yep, I've found it absolutely bizarre. My Canadian partner asked me yesterday what "Bring it! FUCKING BRING IT!" meant as I'd apparently been yelling it all game. Nobody ever wants to advance up the field dribbling the ball, even if, as you say, they are under no pressure. This means that opponents can just stand off and block the passing lanes, as there is zero risk that the England player will move the ball up the field even while unpressured. This was particularly true in the middle third of the pitch. So England never encouraged Slovenia to commit men, never pulled them out of their defensive shape, never created space for other players. Combine this with a general lack of off-the-ball movements and overlapping runs, and it was a bizarrely static spectacle, like watching a game of netball. England seemed to play as though the only way to get past an opponent was to receive the ball to feet and then spin off the marker. Had they been instructed specifically to do this??
@intenzityd31814 ай бұрын
Exactly. With this England team it's like if there is an opposition player within 10 yards in front of them they stop, pivot, and play a sideways/backwards pass. There is absolutely no intent with them either due to how they are coached or just fear. Gordon, Mainoo and Palmer came on with none of that fear.

Remember the idiots kept on insisting in picking Gerrard and Lampard together, and they never gelled. They did it because they were big prima dona stars and big bucks and marketing and making money matters more than actually winning, It's the same with Foden, Bellingham and Kane. 3 into 2 won't go. Either take Kane off and put pacey strikers on to stretch defenders so Foden and Bellingham find space. Or you take either Bellingham or Foden off and put a genuine winger on the flanks to service Kane. It's not rocket science, but to a dimwit like Southgate it seems it is.

@frehdee85164 ай бұрын
But I see that if Southgate does choose to bench one between the 2, Kane will be one of those to benefit from that decision. This England isn't playing to Kane's strengths, and they need to if they want to win it
@CharlieCoops4 ай бұрын
@@frehdee8516 Agreed. We’re not really playing to any of our lead players strengths, but rather making them forcibly accommodate others. Kane needs 2 wingers, out of Saka, Gordon and Palmer, and is comfortable with a floating 10 behind him like Muller (despite him being able to drop in those spaces). Ideally, we have Shaw back if he’s fit. Then there’s Mainoo or Wharton to sit alongside Rice. I’d rest Jude and play Foden at 10. If it’s not working after an hour, you’ve got plentiful options off the bench.

The pass from Kane following Mainoo's flick was really poor. He took a touch which slowed the attack, then slowed it even futher with a pass that allowed three defenders to cover Palmer's shot. As other's has pointed out, the correct pass would have been straight back to Mainoo on the penalty spot.

Then why do they look so Tired? They got a 1-0 vs Croatia in the group stage and to be fair beat Germany pretty comfortably in the round of 16 but then only had to get past Ukraine and Denmark to reach the final. Southgate's good results have been helped by lucky draws which he's got again in this one but they're going to have to beat a top team to win and they're not going to do it playing like that.

If Fodens gone home for a few days, ideal excuse to bring in Gordon, then Bellingham can have a game give it all and if it works, have a rest for the next game when Foden comes back in as the 10. Surely it’s not too hard for Southgate to see that?

Southgate missed a huge trick to actually experiment in this game as we had qualified already and we needed some confidence in the lads up front. As usual, he changed it too late. I really like Southgate but we want him to be ruthless. He's been ruthless and picked an inexperienced squad but now he doesn't trust any of them. We've been crying out for Wharton to come on and break the lines with forward passes but instead, we've got Gallagher who has been sooo poor in this tournament. Chelsea really should cash in on this lad. He can't pass a ball to save his life. I actually liked how we finished the game with Trent at right back inverting, Maino in the middle pushing up as a 10 and Walker at left-back. I'd move Foden to the right, get Bellingham and Foden out of each other's way and bring Saka and Palmer on later in the game. I love Saka and think he's a top player but the lad has been kicked out of most of these games. The experiment with Trent in midfield should have never been can he play CM - it should have been can Walker play left back in a back three with the ball and let Trent be Trent with Bellingham and Gordon overloading their RB and RCB feeding off his passes. GK - Pickford, RB - Trent, CB - Stones, CB - Guehi, LB - Walker, DM - Rice, DM - Maino, RW - Foden, AM - Bellingham, LW - Gordon, ST - Kane.

It’s not even a hard pass and Mainoo doesn’t even need to take touch. I don't think Switzerland are miles better than Denmark. Denmark are a pretty decent team who have made it further recently (2021) than Switzerland ever have. OK, their form hasn't kept up, but still a good team. And Germany will find that out, even if I expect them to win.

Really goods analysis here. I was thinking the other day that watching england has been a bit like watching a netball team who are just completely static while on the ball. Having someone who can actually move slightly when they receive it into a pocket of space makes the world of difference. I really hope Southgate starts with Gordon and Palmer on Sunday, I'm desperate to see something exciting from them after those three games.
@glynnb65724 ай бұрын
Harry Kane made the right pass to Palmer? Mainoo who has shown he can literally pass the ball into the net in those positions, was wide open in the middle of the area. Pointing where he wanted it. Would have had a superb chance to score. Kane played a poor ball to what was the second option, who had a much harder chance.

Adam, honestly, I absolutely love your videos, this is particularly brilliant and totally spot on. You basically captured every visual thought I had and backed it up with data - I'm a bloody genius confirmed. As an Arsenal fan, I think Rice is over rated and as you pointed out, rarely passes the ball forward, never mind a defence splitting pass. He looks so much better with a player like Partey/Jino next to him who can make those kind of passes. I'm not even sure what Rice's best position would be... as this is the problem with todays current players.. too many of them are playing across multiple positions, which means they don't become the 'Best in Class' in one position, hence you end up with Foden and Jude always drifting into their preferred position during the game.... Saka should go LB, Palmer, Gordon, Mainoo, Watkins should start with Jude as the 10.. but he should be rested .. like you say, 4 players are running in quicksand right now!

Its about culture, born in Portugal and moved to England when I was young & let me tell you, how both nations develop youngsters is fundamentally different. Kids as young as 7/8 are already being taught about positional and spacial awareness. No such thing in England till they make it into their mid teens. In short, your players may be incredibly talented, they're just not very smart.

Reactionary nonsense decades out of date. England has had some of the best youth coaching in the world for over a generation now. A player like Harry Kane has as good a positional and spatial understanding as any footballer on the planet. Great analysis as always. Personally I'd go three at the back - Guehi, Stones, Walker - with Bowen and Gordon wing backs, Rice and Wharton in midfield, then Foden and Palmer up front behind Kane. Gordon and Bowen both track back tirelessly and Walker's pace can cover wide with Rice dropping into the centre backs if needed. Going forward that's got pace and directness wide, Wharton adds that progressive passing (as you mentioned) and Foden and Palmer in their best positions centrally to drive into the box, bounce passes and get shots off, while they, Bowen and Gordon can all run beyond Kane if he drops to collect and pass.
@Yakkahboo4 ай бұрын
So I guess my major question for you is with the changes with Gordon and Palmer coming on we also made a change at the back. Obviously we did look defensively sound (against teams that can't score) but I think theres a lot to talk about sticking Walker in LB and Trent on at RB. There had been a lot of complaints regarding Trippier affecting that left hand side because he doesn't have a left foot and always went inside to play a ball, so do you think that the setup at the back end of the game; a. had an impact, b. is better for England going forth, especially considering the flack that TAA has been getting, c. is there a better alternative with the squad we have that fixes the problems we've been having creating from defence?
