From a 75 y.o male American. I've owned several VW vehicles. The prices, the complexity befuddle me. There are no VW Bugs. There are no VW Rabbits. My meaning, how can I buy German in America for less than $50,000? Importantly German engineering, German quality. Reasonable prices for parts/repairs. Those are lost in today's vehicles.

You can buy German cars for lower than $50k. If you can buy top-of-the-line Camry, Accord, Maxima, you can buy German. Whether that's a smart choice is another matter. After the expiration of the factory warranty, residual values of German cars nose-dive for a reason. The higher their original sticker price, they harder they fall.

There is a significant gap in the interview. The Chinese competitor included German companies that operate in China. After the pandemic, the trend of diversifying to shorten supply chains is occurring not only in the West but also in China. The increasing presence of German companies in China could explain this issue. They need a market to generate revenue, which supports their R&D efforts, and China has the customers and engineers in this vast macroeconomic engine that Germany currently lacks.

Some keynotes. 1) Germany lost a substantial market for it's car industry from sanctioning Russia. 2) While technological advancements in car industry are great, they drive up the prices of vehicles. Simplicity is the key. Reliable engines, less electronics and cheap cars. Open new markets in the Global South. All they want is something cheap to commute with.

Uninformed analysis about Germany not understanding how to innovate with EVs. Tech bro oversimplification. EVs are far less profitable because inclusion of large batteries increased cost in unavoidable way. No one is profiting reliably with EVs including Tesla once competition was present in the market. BMW and Porsche have built world class EVs, but to avoid losing money on each sale, they must charge more than an ICE car. China has no profitable EV only company, and they are at overcapacity and are facing a larger crisis than German automakers. The truth is that the world has surpassed peak car. From this point forward, most societies will consume less cars per year and the industry is experiencing an inevitable shrinking. Auto manufacturers should focus their attention on mass transit and micromobility, which are the sustainable transportation options. Cars are dying out.

The future growth of the automobile industry is in Asia/ME and LATAM/Africa. These are the people looking to buy their first cars. VW has been in the US longer than other import brands yet they have significantly fallen behind. VW isn't really known as a quality brand here in the US and they spent most of their resources on China and Europe. With the new ID BUZZ coming but only as the expensive LWB variant and years after Europe got it, it's telling they have no desire to make North America a key market in their plans. I sat in a current gen Tiguan R Line 2 weeks ago and was absolutely floored with how low quality it was just cheap plastic everywhere and not sturdy or well built. VW has zero desire to try. The US market is not a means of growth to recover lost sales from China for VW.

For 70% people transportation legacies cars makers have dealers in a good place for hub of robotaxi. The software and hardware today could be Mobileye or Tesla, tomorow could be own. Other 30% private cars will be, 15% rich people, and other 15% for capricious people on small car. EU doesnt let chinnese cars enter to europe. US doesnt let HW or SW for AV. Now chinnese gobern is killing luxury desire of BMW and MB, because dont let enter chinnese car to europe.

Well they just not in the segment that is intresting. Take the new golf for example an 1.4 motor for 30000+ i mean comon. While mazda is offering the same with an 2l engine. Enignes that are done after 180000kms. A mate of mine had a golf with dsg gearbox and he neded a new gearbox after 80000. The Volkswagen dealer said that was normal !! Also on the electric part was looking at an advertisement new golf range 142 km. Like only 142 km thats nothing and it costs 32000 without tax. On top of that they have issue after issue motor code errors computer errors batterys that are on fire. 30000+ i expect a premium and reliable product. Nah no Volkswagen for me not even if they are getting cheaper. German car manufacturering was all about it beeing a premium reliable car witch they dont make no more.

We will never have a mass adoption of EVs. We should protect the know how acquired on Combustion Engines Technology and try to invest on synthetic fuels. EVs will be great for Amazon, DHL, basically local deliveries and for short distance commuters. Apart from that no one is willing to invest so much money in a vehicle which after just 2 years has lost more than half of its retail value and no one will be interested in buying it second hand.

To be fair, losing a market share in China dose not reflect the problems that German Auto industry faces right now, because their economy and each brand need bargain-selling their car with negative profits. Even Chinese themselves which is Said to win over German auto didn't make any profit out of the economy. This comment section is filled with Chinese bots but I disagree that Chinese EV has an advantage over German car for any reason other than they being cheap. It's all about energy

Don’t make me laugh. VW group is loaded with money. German government will never allow for VW collapse. As it will have massive implications for the economy and safety on the streets. I literally placed an order few days ago for a latest VW Golf 8. Greetings from Poland.

having money dont change the perspective that their chinese market are going away, which account for 40% car sold and 50% of the profit/revenue. I dont doubt they will be fine long as the german government willing to proc them up, but they can say good bye to that 9 million cars a years. realistically you be looking at 5-6 millions a year by the end of the decade if they are lucky. face it days auto industry being owned by german and japanese are over, chinese gonna dump all their ev and flood the global market with cheap ev and phase them out one by one just as they did in their domestic market. If europe is smart, better put up huge trade barrier and start dumping money to help company thats about to go belly up

Easy answer, let the China have access to European market so long as they build the vehicles in Europe. Yes the next 20 years will be difficult for the German/ European auto industry but I believe through innovation over time they can build compelling and competitive vehicles. Also in 20 years the auto industry should look very different than what it does today. Self driving cars are almost here, and this will affect the automotive landscape and car ownership rates should plummet.
