The reason that Galadriel gives Gimli three strands is because Feanor asked her three times for a single strand to incorporate in his Silmarills and three times she refused him for she sensed somethingof the events to come. Her hair contains the light from the two trees of Valinor.

A good summary and analysis of that particular topic and the principal characters. I would only add that Gimli's realm and Legolas bringing other elves to Ithilien after the War, together with Aragorn as High King of Gondor, echoed the best of Middle Earth's ancient history. All three kindreds, dwelling in harmony. It couldn't and didn't last of course, but that it could even be achieved for a time was a triumph.

Lovely, but I think you misspoke when you said that he visited the caves on his honeymoon in the 1940s, he married in 1916, but letter 321 says he revisited in the 1940s. I'd also like to propose some other possible inspirations. The Yorkshire and Derbyshire dales also have limestone show caves. These were well within reach of a train and pony-trap excursion of Leeds, where he lived in the 1920's. But, I confess, I have no evidence that he did ever visit them.

Limestone caves are very very pretty as Tolkien and his wife discovered. Unfortunately they are also very very sensitive places that would not last long if people or anything regularly lived in them or frequently exposed the caves to outside environments. I visited a few here in America and though I was similarly spellbound but I was told not to go around touching everything.
