I have owned 3 American Kennel Club champions; I don't know that much about any other registry, so my observation apply only to the AKC and not to any other registry. I think the AKC places way more emphasis on temperament than is apparent in the Friesian horse inspections. It has gotten to the point where a dog does not have to actually raise a lip, growl or air snap at a judge to be excused and (temporarily) suspended--all it takes is for the judge to feel threatened. Do I think this is a bad thing? No, nope, nuh uh. Dogs tend to live in houses with humans, often with humans who know very little about dog behaviour. It's very important that dogs have sound enough temperament to rise above the inadequacies of their potential owners. I am very, very grateful that all 14 of my dogs were generous about covering up my flaws as a dog handler and making me look like a much better trainer than I actually am. So while formal temperament testing is not part of conformation showing, successfully showing in conformation is a pretty good test of temperament. It shows that the dog is willing to tolerate extensive grooming, including extensive meddling with their nails and sculpting of their toe hair. They are able to focus even with all the hustle and bustle of a show that typically has 1000+ dogs present and at least a few hundred human beings. They are able to maintain their composure around all those strange dogs--all of whom are intact dogs (spay/neutered dogs are ineligible to show in the regular classes). In the show ring, the dogs are willing to tolerate a stranger approaching them directly while staring at them intently (the opposite of the way people are advise to approach strange dogs) and allow them to touch them all over their bodies after just a few seconds. The dog also has to be willing to tolerate this total stranger cranking their mouth open to check their bite and count teeth. That's a lot to tolerate from a stranger they have never met before! And while all this is going on, the dogs most likely to win have to look cheerful and even eager, like they can't imagine a better way to spend a day. It was easy for me because I suspect every dog I ever owned may have been the result of a mad science experiment in crossing piranha genes into dogs--all my dogs constantly swore they were 5 minutes away from death by starvation. They were always happy to participate in any activity that involved liver or garlic chicken or dried cheese plus whatever bait they could shake out of bystanders by employing their formidable charm offensives. So, I can see I am biased here: I had 3 dogs that were not at all fazed by the conditions at AKC shows, in part because they had sound minds, resilient temperament and hearty appetites. Plus, they were all born thinking that merely to see them was to love them (and they were not mistaken--they were among the most adorable 14 dogs on earth).

@@GrainneDhu I can somewhat empathise with you...I didn't show my dogs but have bred them for a while...all were love spoiled from the start, so were used to a fair but a firm loving environment...and so it was their offspring inherited these same qualities...I am a bit ''long in the tooth'' now and so I'm left with only one Chocolate Labrador Retriever now...we used to have nine and they were black, yellow and Chocolate...and even she is getting on a bit...Love from Scotland🎇😁🎇💞🎇🐕🎇🖖🎇

Ginny in inspection,she will give her best to be perfect in this inspection,the beauty of the Friesian Horses is the elegance of the black color that shines in the sunlight Thanks for sharning Yvonne ♥️
@alishasimms28463 жыл бұрын
Is the deeper black color the reason Yvonne said the 2nd horse looked better than Ginny?
@raraavis77823 жыл бұрын
@@alishasimms2846 I think by saying 'type', she was referring to her confirmation (built), which has to be as close as possible to an 'ideal' Frisian. The thick, long hair and fedlocks are also part of it. As is the black coat, of course...but Ginny's lighter coat is likely only due to having been outside in the sun so much. I don't think, this kind of 'sunbleaching' is a reason to take points of a horse at the examination. I couldn't tell you, what exactly was better about the other horse either, though. They look at things like how the neck is angled and how short or long the back is and such. It's all a mystery to me 😉
@pakejeffje62383 жыл бұрын
@@alishasimms2846 The rich dark black color is desirable, but Ginny was not marked down for being less. Also, this inspection was July 17th and Stal G allowed Ginny to be in the pastures for a few months which sun can bleach coat some. The other horse may be genetic a bit blacker? but also may have been kept from much sun. I think Yvonne think 2nd horse had better conformation, but her movement not as good as Ginny. Both categories are very important for final results. 👍
@LeidolfLady3 жыл бұрын
@@alishasimms2846 To me the 2nd horse had a stronger back (in the middle) as the jury pointed that out as a minor point of Ginny - but that is just a humble (cautious?) thought, I'm learning every day by watching the Friesian Herd.
@GrainneDhu3 жыл бұрын
@@alishasimms2846 I'm not Yvonne but my guess is that what Yvonne was looking at in that moment was that the 2nd horse has a better back/topline than Ginny (whose back is a tad long) and the 2nd horse has a better croup. However, in movement, Ginny was, strictly in my own opinion, the better mare that day. Ginny moves long and with power, whereas the 2nd mare moves short and has a sort of scratchy quality to her movement--like the difference between a drawing made with long flowing lines and a drawing made with short sketchy lines. Ginny uses her body better. I'm assuming both mares are 3 year olds, so some of this may change over the next 2 or 3 years. The youngest a horse finishes maturing skeletally is 5 years old--and those are feral medium sized mares living in challenging climates (pregnancy speeds up skeletal maturation). Males take longer to mature, larger horses take longer than smaller horses; the latest maturing horses are large geldings (think some of the larger warmbloods) who don't finish maturing until age 8. My amateur guess would be that the Friesian mares of Goëngamieden probably keep developing until 7 years old. Not necessarily adding height but adding rib spring, pelvic depth, etc. Ginny will probably always be a bit long in the back but her croup could develop more so that it doesn't have quite so much slope, etc. All the jury can do is judge Ginny as she was on that day. And in a year's time, Ginny may or may not be a somewhat different horse! Such is the fascination of horse breeding.

Hooray for Ginny and Stal G! A wonderful result, so happy. Ginny seemed so relaxed and carried her head so beautifully. And that trot, like her hooves were on little springs. Gorgeous.

Wow, Ginny presented herself so well at the inspection! Her dancing and floating brought tears to my eyes. She was so calm and seemed to enjoy herself really. Ginny is such a beauty, with her gorgeous trot and flagtail a worthy daughter of lovely Saly, crown mare, my dreamlady horse! So happy for the stall G team, congratulations on another star mare in the stable! 🥰❤️🌟

Ginny is a beautiful mare. I love the shape of her face, and she really showed it here. She was so relaxed, and was flagging her tail as she trotted. Beautiful!

Wow Yvonne you all had a long exciting day. Congratulations on all your work and success. Ginny looked stunning, like she was in a beauty pageant. Forgot little Black Panther was a new resident at the stables

Ginny is simply exquisitely beautiful her movement is flawless and she’s the mirror image of Saly like mother like daughter. I know everyone is very proud of Ginny especially “mama” Elianne she’s thrilled one of her beloved babies she’s watched blossom from a tiny filly to magnificent mare gets to stay at Goengamieden Ginny is a special girl to her. Perhaps Saly was giving her daughter inspection tips over the fence and of course the all important “do your best we’ll always be proud of you” Goed zo to all.🐴💞💞🌟🌟
