Holy smokes... Over 400,000 views. Thank you! And thank you all for your comments and respectful discussions and input. We'll certainly be covering more from Glitch about the state of the entertainment industry soon! In the meantime, bust out some snacks and watch TADC and Murder Drones again. Or watch Disney burn. Whichever you prefer. And while we hope you to even surpass this video in the future, if this is to be our fifteen minutes fame, then to all you writers out there, remember this: YOU NEED YOUR STORIES, YOUR STORIES NEED YOU, AND THE WORLD NEEDS YOUR STORIES. Never give up and keep on being creative!

You do realise that nobody gives an actual hoot about animation, right? The reason people gravitate towards these indie projects more is because of the writing! Wich has taken a trumendous hit for a while now. Lackadaisy for example has fire arms, swearing and characters doing immoral things, but I like it a ton more than helluva boss! Why? Because unlike helluva boss, where they executed equally shoddy as most adult animation since the simpsons, lackadaisy actually understand what needs to be used, how and when, handguns are deadly, the crime is done to make ends meat, and swearing is only to underscore not dominate a moment! That is some good food right there, while Disney gives nothing but dribble!
@camillesharem

@@erikbihari3625 There's a loooooot of people who would disagree with you that animation doesn't matter. It absolutely does. The writing is essential, too. People are hungry for great stories, fun characters, meaningful dialogue, good action, real romance, and more. Animation has a feel to it that live action will never capture. It can go further, zanier than live action, and when done correctly, even 2D animation can capture a feel and look that 3D has not yet replicated. Lackadaisy is a great example of wonderful writing combined with great animation. The way the cats move and look elevates a Prohibition tale above the dark world of bootleggers and murderers. It allows Tracy Butler and her crew to get away with humor and action that would look clunky in 3D and downright stupid in live action, but it fits the suspension of disbelief we give to 2D cartoons. If no one cared about animation, then it would have died as a medium. But we keep coming back to it because of the potential it holds, the nostalgia it brings, and the stories it can elevate and transform with its unique qualities.

That's true, the stars certainly aligned for Glitch! My older sister likes to point out that even super skilled individuals might never get their big break all due to luck. And it is an element, but focusing too much on that easily becomes an excuse to give up because the odds are always against us. However, Glitch's history dhows that perseverance does pay off. @camillesharem you see the thing is, glitch wants to prioritize quality over production and allow the producer to have more time to think about the plot. beside if all 3 shows were run at the same time sure it will be good but is not polished I think we can all agree we would rather wait for a episode that has a lot of preparation and potential to be a classic then constant decent episode with no plots

@@camillesharem This is one of the major differences between Triple AAA/Corporation-made stuff, and Indie stuff. Sure, the corporations have so many people, but communication can be bad or people will just not be allowed to really discuss much of anything, meanwhile with indie stuff, communication between employees is more often prioritized so that everything gets done smoothly. (TADC actually had this mentioned in one part, where a unscripted animation was added for expressiveness by one animator (,the one making the video that talked about this,) and then the other animators decided to use it too. Meanwhile, in a corporation, I'm sure this would get asked to be taken out.)

Yo. 30 year old artist here. As someone who's been in the exact same boat, I can assure you, there's always an audience for whatever you're making. I've yet to find success in putting my own ideas out there, and it's only recently that I've truly started applying myself thanks to some amazing people in my life who actively push me to succeed. I've finally written down some of my stuff and I'm slowly bringing it to life as drawings as time goes on. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't give up. You've got an amazing gift few other people can brag about, let alone have the will to use. And even though it doesn't seem like it, there's always gonna be someone who wants to see your creations come to life. You never know. And hey, sometimes you gotta start small (take it from someone working on fan comics that will hopefully see the light of day). But you'll get there. Godspeed, fellow artist. TLDR; don't give up on your art, surround yourself with moral support, and don't neglect the need for self-care.

I'm personally hesitant to say that Glitch is on its way to destroy and own Disney. Yes they are currently destroying Disney with their latest product and Disney has plenty of competitors now but this is far from the first time Disney has been like this. Disney has been destroyed by competition in the past and on has been its own downward spirals, and made comebacks in one way or another. This is also the first product of Glitch to be this succesful. There's no guarantee they'll be able to re capture their success again, as is rare (2nd product syndrome, happens a lot with businesses that go viral). I do however believe that Disney is going to struggle to fight back against the current state of all online cartoons and streaming services in general, if they don't adapt to it. So let's all be cautiously hopeful. Successfully owning Disney is extremely rare and the best example I can think of is Pixar (Don Bluth tried, but financial trouble got to him eventually). And even then, Pixar had to make deals with Disney so they themselves could survive, directly benefitting both.
@camillesharem
@camillesharem 9 ай бұрын
True, Disney is a juggernaut that even with all its financial and legal woes can still keep on trucking. Even if they lost half of their assets, they'd still be able to make movies and shows! But where they've been destroyed is in their cultural relevance. That's why I used the numbers, was to show that this isn't just some Twitter or Tik-Tok trend, but that Glitch's one episode has buried Disney hard. And that is because they have tapped into an audience and vein of storytelling that Disney has completely lost sight of. And because of that, it could be that a culture-shaper like Disney might completely miss the ball for the next 6-7 years, along with everyone else not paying attention to why Glitch is doing so well.

@@LugiDergX Unfortunately, Disney has been rotting from the inside out. There was a independent audit on their holdings in Florida that look REALLY bad. They lost hundreds of millions at the box office, and they're not even footing the bill for ESPN (which isn't actually all that bad, but it shows they're strapped for cash), and their shows and movies are just no longer resonating with the world like they once did. Disney needs serious reforms from within and a return to good storytelling and risk-taking. I don't see Disney disappearing, but unless they turn around, it'll be years before people generally treat them favorably again.

I think what was a big cause of Disney’s fall, was their need to make all of their movies have some secret meaning. But the thing is, it’s all been done before. Elemental was about “ooo, forbidden love. Don’t conform to society when it comes to love”. But then, what was the Little Mermaid about? Beauty and the Beast? And then Wish. Wish is about working towards your own goals and not relying on wishes to cheat your way out of the work. Well, Pinocchio? Cinderella? And the list can go on forever. My point is, it’s hardly a crime to just make something for the sake of entertainment. Like Murder Drones, Digital Circus, Gravity Falls, Hilda. It can have a moral to take from it, but the entire story shouldn’t revolve around that moral. And hey, I can’t wait for my animation to get out there. It’d be amazing to listen to reviews about it. Reactions, lore videos, everything that Murder Drones had. I’m just saying, it’d be nice.

I've learned that as you write a good story, you find themes and morals that you can weave into it. It's hard to work the other way around. And Disney had certainly forgotten that! @@camillesharem an interwoven moral is good. It lets the story play out and it doesn’t overpower the plot or the characters. I guess if I think about it, the moral story of Shadow Bound would be something like, “pride corrupts to the core. It goes straight for the heart, and it won’t ever willingly release its grasp”. And if you do end up doing a review of my works in the future (that sounds amazing, I would love that), I tend to take blatant honesty much better than anything else. It gets straight to the point, tells me exactly what I did wrong so that I can learn from it. If words that deliver the point indirectly, it won’t be ingrained in my memory, and I’ll eventually forget what I did wrong in the first place. I’ll be absolutely sure to let you know when I finish it. (Unfortunately, I can’t see it happening within 2 years of now. Maybe 3 or 5. My artistic abilities are improving, but they still suck.)

Elemental was about so much more. It's about generational trauma (wich yes, is an overused trope on modern Disney but I'd argue elemental executes it very well), it's about racial biases, it's about the immigration experience, all that wrapped up in very pretty animation with a cute little forbidden love story. It bombed sure, but it's pretty okay, and I don't think the issue is the stories being unoriginal in it's premisses, but just.. bad in the writing and execution. Wish sucks because it wasn't written right, not because it's a ripoff of Pinocchio and Cinderella. It sucks because the protagonist is lazily written, the villain sends mixed signals and the songwriters aren't musical theater people, they're pop music people.

Yes, the real money is in the merchandizing! I really, REALLY lowballed the guestimate of how much money they make in merchandise sales, but I know that that there is where they make up all their costs. It is also a good indicator for how popular a program is, which is an indicator that Disney has long since lost! And that's one of the reasons why I want this video to fall in the laps of other KZbinrs like Valiant Renegade and WDW Pro. I think that they would be honestly astonished at how an indie animation company has created a model that is sustaining their business and easily outpacing Disney.

I do hope GLITCH becomes a big player in the overall animation industry. To have a reliable indie publisher that obscure creative artists who just want to tell a genuinely good story can turn to is a HUGE game changer for the indie animation landscape. The biggest problem with indie is the initial funding for those projects. By having GLITCH be the big publisher to promote and publish those projects, artists don't have to worry about going hungry for the night just to finish their work. They can just focus on making a good show and GLITCH will handle everything else from marketing, staff, merch, etc. The best part is that Kevin and Luke (the founders of the company and the ones who have the final say in everything) aren't some shadow council made up of a bunch of out-of-touch, greedy, decrepit pennypinchers. They're animators who know how hard the animation process is, from scriptwriting, creating the models, sound-mixing, the actual animating itself, if anyone knows how to be in charge of an animation studio, it's them. I don't know about you guys but I think this might just be the renaissance of internet animation in general, and just when I thought the golden days from the era of Newgrounds and Flash will never come back....

Okay so I've noticed this trend since the pandemic ended that at the end of the year, an animated production is released that shocks people with how good it is and starts dominating the internet and connecting with people. In late 2021 to Early 2022, we had Disney release Encanto, which had great songs, beautiful animation, a story many people connected with because of the themes of generational trauma and characters people were making head-canons and fanart for (as well as making Bruno a Tumblr Sexyman). You couldn't go five minutes without someone bringing this movie up. In late 2022 to Early 2023, we had Dreamworks with Puss in Boots the Last Wish, which is a movie Dreamworks NEEDED to make. Absolutely stunning visuals, amazing humor reminiscent of the Shrek films, themes of fear and anxiety that many (including myself) connected with, and great characters (mostly villains) people were making head-canons and fanart for, and making Death a Tumblr Sexyman. It had been years since a Dreamworks film had people talking THAT much. In late 2023 to probably early 2024 and onward, we have Gooseworks and Glitch with The Amazing Digital Circus. A theme song that is still stuck in my head, fun bouncy animation, a dark story and setting people were relating to, and, you guessed it, characters people were making head-canons and fanart for, as well as making Jax AND Caine Tumblr Sexymen (and possibly Kinger but that's debatable). Something about all three of these projects (other than the Tumblr sexymen) that I find interesting is that people were kind of shocked and amazed by how well these projects were doing and how well they could convey important themes and relatable characters. But something *more* important is the fact that all three of these productions *came from different studios*. Considering how much Pixar and Disney dominated the box office during the 2010s, I think it's great that animation productions can be successful and popular without having to come from Disney. (though I will point out that the Super Mario Bros Movie and Spiderverse did well at the box office this year, but I'm not considering them because we all knew they were gonna do well. Mario Bros was made by Illumination and it's Mario so of course it was gonna make bank, and Spiderverse has been popular since it was first released in 2018, so of course people were gonna go to Theatres to watch it). Am I saying Disney *doesn't* need to step up their game? Oh heck no. They've been in tricky spots before like in the 80s so I think they can pull out of this if they actually try. But they aren't. Wish and Strange World did poorly at the Box Office and critically. I just think it's healthy for the industry that Disney Animation has competition now. Though I have to say, even though it was released in the year Disney decided to explode, Elementals is FREAKING ADORABLE and I will die on that hill.

I unironically think that patreon-like productions are the future of art, not only in animations. The thing is free for everyone, but if you want a sequel or really like it (or you like the producer) and want to support them/it, you pay for it.

Indie animation is incredible right now!! Tadc, murder drones, helluva boss, lackadaisy, and even has in hotel coming to prime in a month. It’s exciting to see the industry in this shift and hopefully it gets bigger studios to produce more stuff like spider verse and the last wish

I agree. I grew up on Disney and some of the most transformative stories that made me who I am come from Disney. Watching them fall is honestly sad and it only with the bitterest Schadenfreude that I go after "new" Disney for their ridiculousness. But it is far better and brings me way more joy and hope to talk about how incredible new stories and shows like The Amazing Digital Circus and Murder Drones are! Good things are coming and big changes, it's just sad that Disney isn't a positive part of that.

Disney has been destroying itself from the inside, much like Rome did for decades. But it still takes an outside force to bulldoze the weakened empire. Glitch represents the massive changes happening outside of the mainstream, which at the same time reflects the desires and popular storytelling of many in the audience, which Disney refuses to acknowledge. In short, Disney's demise is a process of a thousand cuts, many of them sadly self-imposed. But the killing blow is coming from the independent creators outside of their control.

The funny thing is that people mostly forgot that Disney, in it's earliest days, was effectively an indie studio... It was just two brothers with a dream. It started falling apart the more time passed, especially after Walts death, as it became less about his vision and more about money. Way back in the day, Walt actually stood his ground against Universal when they tried to bully the small Disney studio into working for cheap. Walt refused, and made a project to compete with Universal... Mickey Mouse. Against all odds, it outperformed Universal and established Disney in the animation world as it's own thing. It's funny how history repeats in a lot of ways, isn't it? Back then, Universal got stuck in it's old ways, and got defeated by an independent studio that didn't take no for an answer. Now, Glitch is effectively doing the same to Disney, which is stuck in it's old ways. It's time for Walt and Roys dream to rest with them. Let the next generation take over.

The profit you calculated is just from the pilot alone. Glitch also produces merch for their shows as well. Murder drones has got plenty, but the amazing digital circus at the very least has the pomni and jax plushes. I've got no clue how much of those got sold, but that only increases their profit.
@camillesharem
@camillesharem 9 ай бұрын
Yes! And I lowballed my guestimate for the revenue they make with their merchandise sales. They're making a real mint with their plushies and other accessories. Now, it comes down to what they do with the money next, because cash itself doesn't equal success. But if they continue to invest and grow their team where appropriate and feasible, they might be able to do more shows and on an even more stable schedule.

I hope they keep doing a good job as this sort of reminds me of early Rooster Teeth days. Good content, low budget, good fandom, and they are making up the costs by just showing good content. It sound naive and simple, but its the best we can hope for as most major industries shows are caring more about DIE... DEI politics and points leaving smaller groups to rush in and fill the gap for good content for the sake of making something good to stand on its own merits.
@camillesharem
@camillesharem 9 ай бұрын
Glitch really is like the new Rooster Teeth. If they can avoid the mistakes that Rooster Teeth made, they could go a very long way. DEI is ridiculous, but given how small they are and how they're likely working on maintaining a semblance of self-sufficiency, I think Glitch can easily sidestep taking out any loans that require a DEI score.

What Amazing abijt Luke (Smg4) and Kevin is that they are EXTREMELY passionate on animation, and there are other indie creators out their and the best part is they dont look for the top tier independent animator’s as long as your unique they offer you the power to spread your voice in the world of animation. WHATS EVEN BETTER they treat there animators so well and Offer a lot of Creative Freedom to make their vision better.

The one thing we DO know about Glitch's budgets from Luke and Kevin was that, due to constant retakes, the first season of Meta Runner cost a $1,000,000 (Australian) which works out to $100k/ep. Murder Drones and TADC have much more streamlined productions but also more+better animators so I'd imagine their per-episode costs are in that ballpark too. Between Glitch, Spindlehorse, and whoever animated Lackadaisy, it's a good time for indie animation and indie animators. Sorry for extra paragraphs, but I think even the existence of CH's video and others like it proves that Disney in particular forgot one of ol' Walt's principles -- "You're dead if you only make cartoons for children. Adults are just children grown up." Sure, he was pretty risk-averse due to his films flopping every time he and the Nine Old Men put in actual effort (Fantasia, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty) but at least he knew a good script when he saw one and modern focus groups didn't exist during his lifetime. Thanks to Florida's evil governor declaring war on Disney, lots of 'net pundits -- who have even less brains than politicians -- blame Disney's fall on "wokeness" when if anything it's the opposite. Disney plays it too safe because they're afraid of both the far-right and the far-left thus their bland storytelling ends up pleasing no one.

Thanks for the insight on Glitch's production expenses. I hadn't heard about that from Kevin and Luke. That makes me feel way more sure about my guesses! Absolutely, animation is meant for everyone! And it makes me mad when I hear adults deride the medium. It largely means that they checked in their imagination and sense wonder for "growing up." And I've seen it show, too... And here's the thing, even cartoons meant to for children can have massive appeal and application for adults, it all depends on the elements you put into them. Disney forgot how to be bold with their storytelling, they don't know how to use dark/horror storytelling anymore to enhance their fantasy, and they can't write bad guys anymore! I have a whole video to do on that later next year, but I want to wait and see what this new Bill Cipher book has in store for us. I have the feeling that Disney ticked off Alex Hirsch by axing a comeback story of his... This book was long in the making, but he let loose on Disney once his NDA was up and Matt Braly has been fuming online. I think real drama went down between them and Mickey, and these were some of the last guys in the company who were willing to do darker and bolder storytelling. Dana Terrace seems to have just checked out and is trying to forget what they did to the Owl House...
