NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Goa tomorrow and take part in celebrations organised to mark Goa’s liberation day. Although India gained independence from the British in 1947, Goa, Daman and Diu that were ruled by the Portuguese had to wait 14 years to be integrated with the Indian union. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale explains the circumstances that led to ‘Operation Vijay’.

Imagine if India had not shown the spine to take back these territories - it would been like Africa today with US and European bases littered everywhere. In fact US and UK still have some bases in Indian Ocean like the Diego Garcia

Yup, even worse than military bases, you would have constant local bickering that would prevent India from having enough stability to make a wider impact on the world stage. Just see the middle East for an example.

Though I like listening to his talks on historical events. He has clearly goofed up by first saying that Vasco was in search of America but landed in Goa, where as it is Columbus who set out for India but landed in America thus ending up calling native Americans as Indians. Secondly, the first agitation by "Goanese" was not after Ram Manohar Lohia and T. B. Cunha teamed up but was much earlier by Goans in the form of the Pintos Conspiracy.

Where are you getting this information from? Though Portuguese dictator Salazar had asked the local governor Vassalo e Silva to maintain a scorched earth policy, the then governor never executed this order as he did not want to wipe off Portuguese architecture and monuments from Goa, all the Portuguese did were blow up a couple of bridges to stop advance of the Indian Army. Vassalo e Silva was greeted with a hostile reception when he returned to Portugal. He was subsequently court martialed for failing to follow orders, expelled from the military and was sent into exile. His rank and freedom were restored only in 1974, after the fall of the regime, and he was given back his military status. He was later able to conduct a state visit to Goa, where he was given a warm reception due to his previous decision to not let Goa burn.

What happened to those Portugese?? Did they remain here or left? Is it true that Goan people can have dual citizenship of portugese nd india?
@basildza
@basildza 2 жыл бұрын
India does not allow dual citizenship. But anyone who can show any ancestor having been born in Portuguese occupied Goa before liberation, can choose to swap their Indian citizenship for a Portuguese one. This is because Portuguese took an unusual step of declaring all colonies as integral parts of their country. They did this to avoid having to give them back as part of the decolonisation wave that was ongoing after world war 2. The only effect this had was a long line of citizenship applications from people trying to get a Portuguese passport to get into the EU or Britain.

Myanmar used to be one province of East India Company. After decolonization, India, Pak. Myanmar are all independent. GOA was even not part of East India Company, why India thought GOA is part of independent India naturally?

East India company didn't own or have a copyright to.determine the boundaries of India. They were kicked out. Just as the Hindus were attacked & brutally defeated by Catholics in the 1600's in Goa, it was fairly & rightfully liberated from invaders or Catholic Portuguese. Now the Catholics in 1962 were defeated.

Goa was never a part of a unified India. To claim that it was "liberated" in 1962 is just a straight lie. It was invaded and forcibly annexed against the wishes of the people of Goa. I can't imagine why you would want to lie about a very recent and well documented piece of history. The same goes for Hyderabad state.

Gomantak( Goa) was invaded and forcibly annexed against wish of majority of Hindus by Radical Catholics who did Evilish things like Inquisition & cutting hands oh Hindus at Haath katro in Goa. Infact, the Portuguese who surrendered needed to be beheaded and sent to Lisbon,that also would've not matched the Portuguese cruelty. The sympathizers like you should be dealt in a similar way.

@@MaTara01 sorry to burst your another bubble, it is not an India specific Geopolitical channel..all it does is discuss some events which are covered by international news channels on daily basis which even WION and other news channels does. You will find same professor, analyst etc speaking same stuff in think tanks, other news channels etc.. so nothing new..simply..as far as I am concerned.. for example the conflict in Ethiopia doesn't affect India so much; but it's an important global event, so to show that it's tracking global affairs, Nitin pays some money to a journalist over there, calls him and asks him some questions or his views, the same views are written by that journalist for some other media item like NY Times and Al-Jazeera. Another example. Michael kugelman. I have personally attended a Lecture where he discussed a topic and it's all same being repeated here in Stratnewsglobal...so that's what the reality is ...the ambassadors that he calls here sometimes post same views in Indian Express and other sources, so what's the big deal over here ?? Stratnews is not unique...it's just like the rest of media people who cover this area of journalism..
