The Pak's plan was based on a war game played in the Pentagon, USA. The game plan had considered and ruled out the possibility of the Indian Army crossing the international border. The reason for this miscalculation was that the Indian PM would not dare to cross the IB. The Pak weaned on such myths as each one of them was equal to ten dal-rice-eating Indian jawans.

It was the idea of General Jayant Chowdhury to attack Lahore. His father was the Raja of Taki, West Bengal. He also captured Hyderabad in 1948.

Pakstan's goal for the 1965 war was to occupy more Indian territory in the state of J&K. Pakfauj didn't achieve that goal, moreover the Indian army was knocking at Lahore's door. Listen, some free advice for you. It's better to remain silent and be considered a fool, than to open your mouth and confirm it to the others. My understanding on "Why Lahore is centre of gravity for pakistan" :- 1. It is the major economic hub, because of still heavily agriculture reliant pakistani economy. 2. Majority of their armed forces officers and foot soldiers come from punjab. So, moral damage. 3. Punjab is population- heavy part of Pakistan, just like Balochistan is the land-heavy part. India's main attack was directed at Chawinda area where its only armored division was deployed. Lahore had secondary importance. Indian attack on Lahore was a poorly planned, weak, infantry led attack that immediately failed. On the first day, Pakistan blew up the bridges over the Ichogil canal and the battle was practically over. Indian attack did succeed at a strategic level as it diverted Pakistani forces away from Jammu

Also to dispel this notion that had Pakistan have captured Akhnoor bridge then India would have lost Kashmir. It’s all wrong as then India wouldn’t have settled down there and then neither the war would have finished on 21st September. Even after losing that sector, India would have launched counter attack by mustering more forces there. It would have made Pakistan to consolidate its grip.

Why didn't Pakistan try to wrest Kashmir from India in 1962 but tried to do so in 1965? ------------- My answer ----------- Very interesting question . In 1962 Pakistan was not politically / diplomatically prepared to militarily annex Kashmir . In fact Pakistan was even prepared to help India to jointly face the Chinese threat , Further , Pakistan was then an Alliance partner of USA .USA had directed Pakistan not to open another front against India . India , Pakistan , Chinese relations changed very dramatically after 1962 Pakistan under the guidance of Bhutto struck an anti deal with China whereby , inter alia , Pakistan gifted 5000 sq km plus of POK-i.e. Shaksgam Valley to China . By 1965 , Pakistan had China as an ally . Kennedy was gone in 1963 . Also , most important for Pakistan’s 1965 Indian attack decision Nehru had also died in 1964. Pakistan though that the new Indian Prime Minister , Lal Bahadur Shastri was a weak and indecisive leader and lacked stature especially when compared to Nehru. PM Lal Bahadur Shastri ‘s weak personality image was further bolstered by PM Shastri ‘s , sort of appeasement of Pakistan in the Rann of Kutch crisis in early 1965 Most important factor for Pakistan ‘s decision to attack India in Kashmir in1965 was that after her defeat in 1962 India had started expanding exponentially her armed forces both in numbers and equipment. Pakistan felt that if delayed further Pakistan , which was militarily superior to India till then , would never be able to wrest Kashmir from India. So ,Pakistan attacked Kashmir calculating that a weak Indian PM would keep the war limited to Kashmir. But PM Shastri with totally unexpected resolve , bravery and decisiveness .He counter attacked Pakistan across the International Border in Punjab forcing Pakistan to withdraw its forces from the Kashmir front and to , later , accept a ceasefire

See the account of conquest of Lahore by Lt. Gen HS Panag. Gen. Panag became the commanding officer of the very battalion that conquered Lahore 12 years after the fact. It was a battalion of 4 Sikh regiment and how not one single soldier of the 4 Sikh regiment fought for 16 days of the 17 day war. They were all dead or Pows.

Absolutely. Indian Army is known for its cowardice. Its biggest cowardice was in 1971 war. Due to Indian Army's sheer cowardice Bangladesh was liberated.

You can always invent numbers but the Indians generals who fought the war call it a draw. There have been only two decisive battles between India and Pakistan, one in 1948 when Pakistan threw out Indian Army from 35000 Sq. mi. of Kashmir now called Azad Kashmir and Gilgit And Baltistan. India avenged this in 1971 by conquering 55000 Sq. mi. of what is now called Bangladesh. One correction, in 1971 India did not conquer half of Pakistan it only conquered one-sixth of Pakistan.
