Explains why Mr. Popo is so OP in DBZA. He's already Ultra Instinct while everyone else in Super Saiyan at most. I actually had this exact same realization when I re-read the OG Dragonball manga back in September last year while stuck at home with Covid. Popo knew Ultra Instinct. Popo taught Kid Goku Ultra Instinct. They just didn't call it that back in the day. Back then, it didn't need a silly name, because it was just what it was - basic martial arts. Then came all the spectacle, but at least for a long time, DB was still focused on the martial arts. It only really changed once Raditz arrived, and everything started to get retconned. From that point onward, it was more about the spectacle and less about the believable martial arts fights.

Ultra Instinct is basically nothing but the most basic instruction of martial arts.

Mr. Popo taught him to feel instead of think, but ultra instinct isn't even feeling, its totally letting go of everything and letting the body move on it's own. That's why Vegeta couldn't do it, and that's why when Goku's emotions get in the way in the manga, he can't use the silver haired form. Mr. Popo's teachings are more of a half-way to ultra instinct.

I was thinking kind of the same for years lol, since back when he got Ultra Instinct. Afterimage in itself also functions similarly, so it's probably the same thing at its core, just to another level. It is also interesting when you recall what Z's episode 1, where Roshi asks Goku if he's kept up with his training? To which Goku has been... but maybe even back then Roshi didn't just mean his physical strength. Similar pattern happens to Gohan too frankly, but also in the power department. It's letting one of your instincts get rusty. Whether it's mind, body, and/or soul, you must keep training them constantly, to keep balance, yourself sharpened. If you focus too much on power, you lose the other senses, focus too much on mind you get flabby. Goku's strength remained sharpened, but his mind dulled, while Gohan kept his mind sharpened, but let his body dull. To which honestly explains why both forms have the white hair... well actually probably SHOULD be grey lol, but the concept of Yin, Yang, and Wuji. Upon finding their balance Goku achieved UI and Gohan Beast, that skyrocketed their abilities. UI isn't inherently strong or a massive power boost, the idea is a good offense equals a good defense (one could argue Ultra Ego is the opposite, the best defense is a good offense, funny how Vegeta and Gohan are both parallels to Goku), but because of working in tandem with Goku's other abilities is what makes it such a powerful ability. Yang is masculine, white hot, and physical while Yin represents femininity, cold, and internal energy. On the other hand Yin is versatile, while Yang is unbending. UI takes that aspect of Yin on, the ability to move without thinking, the flexibility, while Beast (and UE) are solid foundation, unbending, unmovable, unbreakable. Wuji meanwhile is both and neither, grey you could say, it's the balance and ability to master both, thus proving you've ascended to Godhood from your mortal self. To achieve one must return to their roots, and thus they can ascend (Goku harkening back to his training with Popo, Gohan's BEAST form embracing inner monk). Wuji is nothingness, which is a state UI represents very well, your mind and body moving on their own, being nothing, relying on pure innate instinct. Goku who is well already in a God form, thus goes even higher, because in DB Gods are all over, in Kais, but then you got Destroyer Gods at a level above them, to which SSG and Blue can match... but UI ascends him to the heavens, higher, to the level of DB's angels. This is why it is different from his training with Popo, while simultaniously... being the same as his training with Popo lol.

I actually think it's having to go back to the basics, which are the foundations of whatever it is they do to find their way again. You can think of it as a normal person. Going through a midlife crisis and having to re-evaluate their life and try to get back what they feel they may have lost. Or a martial artist who feels they need to revisit the basics. While teaching someone else those very same basics to further their own understanding of their martial arts path.

The whole point of Mr. Popo’s training was the fundamental lesson of how to make the instincts you have become better and more refined, that’s why goku was able to stay in the ssj 1 form and be level headed after the htc pre cell game. And got done with the three ssj transformations and then spoke to buu without any anger. Yet ultra instinct was introduced because of the real world reason that it was such a long time since we had seen goku learn from Mr Popo that we could be seeing him learn from wies and be ok with it.

in DBZ, your state of mind has a large influence over your power levels. so reminding them to use martial arts principles they've been neglecting could reasonably change how powerful they are or even what form their power takes.

If we want to be charitable, Ultra Instinct is the perfect expression of an ideal that martial artists are striving toward. We could even look at Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego as perfect expressions of opposite martial paths - serenity and rage, respectively. Goku stepped off the path of serenity with the Super Saiyan transformations, but came home to it with Ultra Instinct. They could take this in a really interesting direction, if they were so inclined.

Don't forget that Mr.Popo has a very similar face to Zeno. Granted its probably nothing important as their faces are pretty similar but it does add to the mystery of who mr.popo is. Is he just a genie alien? Maybe part of Buu's race? (since they're both based off genies) Maybe he's a retired Angel everyone forgot about? Maybe a past god of destruction? Or maybe he's just mr. popo? The big part of mr.popo is always found fascinating is how he never fights himself despite being clearly strong enough to outdo 2 super saiyans, which means he could of beaten frieza, king cold, the androids and maybe even cell; yet he doesn't. He only assists and guides others. Why? Maybe his role is restricting him or maybe he doesn't want to show off who he actually is; since he doesn't want anyone to find out.

Personally I like to think Whis only considered training Goku in the first place because Master Popo had taken Goku as a pupil years before. Further I do think at some point Goku did get lost in training his power level and lost some proficiency in the divine martial teachings of Master Popo. Hence why Whis started training Goku back from the basics, he was recalling and reinforcing Popo’s earlier training before letting Goku move forward with Ultra Instinct mastery

You know what? I just realized? There's another technique that Goku should have started learning from Mr. Popo and Kami; energy absorption or redirection. We can at least say ultra instinct is the culmination of Goku's lessons and experiences, but I imagine learning how Popo swallowed Goku's Kamehameha would have been pretty helpful to negate an opponent's attack. I also have a thought that if Dr. Gero's robots were spying on Goku during this time on the lookout, perhaps this is how he got the concept idea to build Android 19 as an energy absorbing model. I imagine Goku could have picked up on this technique relatively quickly also, but this will just be in the realm of hypotheticals.

I would say that UI is not *Total focus/Dodge without thinking" but "Migatte no Gokui", meaning roughly "The Secret of Self-Movement/Self-Centered. Its about every part of the body moving on its own without thinking about it. This is not "Total focus" but rather "instinctiv movement of every bodypart on its own" For me, a different concepts and thus not something Goku lernt prior. It laid a foundation at best for me. Just my take, no offence! Cool Video! ^^

Concerning the question about Mutaito’s power level, I’d like to think the Mutaito was certainly stronger than Roshi was when he was his student, but clearly Roshi got better over the next few hundred years. There was also a decent gap between King Piccolo at 260 and Roshi at 180, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable for Mutaito to have been stronger than Roshi was by the events of Dragon Ball, but still a bit under that 260 mark-perhaps 230-240. And since King Piccolo was already an extremely skilled martial artist, Mutaito couldn’t make up that gap with his other skills, aside from the Evil Containment Wave.

I can't really blame Goku ditching Martial Arts for power though. At the start of Z despite all of his technique and help of Piccolo he lost against Raditz and only manage to beat Raditz because his son who never trained until that point overpowered Raditz and Piccolo used a beam that was more powerful. None were related to techniques as a Martial Artist Goku polished until than. On top of that everyone he faced afterwards were just too powerful for techniques to be effective against them. The problems always moved into direction of 'overpowering Strength that makes techniques irrelevant' This continued in Super as well First Beerus who was so out of Goku's league he needed a ritual to become God to reach the 'not totally useless' level than Frieza came with his own overpowered state. Hit was the first who Goku needed to use a technique rather than power in a long time and after that Zamasu thing happened where they needed to use another rather special technique but backfired. At the point of ToP Goku was already in a state where fights were happening with so much of a power gap techniques were not cutting it out and trying to get a higher fighting power was the only solution. Goku entered UI sign only because he became unconscious and his body reacted in a way how he should instead of how he would.

Super sayan is not a power level it is a multiplier of the power level. I hate when people say so and so beat a super sayan like its some sort of feat when it is not if a person has a power level of 10 and becomes a super sayan they would only have a power level of 500.

I think a big Problem of DBZ was thad they wanted to Change zhe Appeal and go away from the funny story with martial arts elements. The way Goku and the gang tend to train most of the time consists of basic exercises under immense gravitation wich is a way to show the Guys get stronger but they don't get better. In the end in DBZ most of the Time they don't Train martial arts instead they are hitting the Gym. In this regards it makes somehow sense thad Goku just forgot about the principiles taught by mister popo and Master Mutaito a lot of this gym trainin is basically Turte scool from Master roshi to train yourself to surpass the Human Limit wich ironicaly everyone of the fighters already did.

The clue is this. The words are instinct and ultra. They was teaching "empty your thoughts". It's letting go of the unnecessary you're mind and body knows what it has to do. After a a point of martial arts training you already know what you can do. The only problem is applying it. You think you must plan and strategize with knowledge. That's not true. INSTINCTS can take over knowledge. Exsample: Mosquitos are hard to take out. How While driving and focusing on the road you notice this pesky critter just flying in your face. You notice it's size, color, and other tiny details that don't matter. You're think "Just one more time you annoying devil.". No thought of if you get it our not. "JUST ONE MORE TIME". 0.45 second or less just react to seeing it. My wife sees me grab at the air. I hold out my hand and ask "what do you see"?. I hear "what is that a mosquito?" I say "if that's what you see, I guess I got it then. Im driving and it's breaking my concentration." My instinct took over. The ultra part comes from the power level stuff. At a point it no longer matters once the instinct enters. I think UI is that moment in the show where no measurement can be made it just is or isn't.

As much as I love DB and DBZ, I admit the DBZ is more about who's got the higher power level but it was still entertaining because there was somewhat of a story going forward, especially before Buu sage. However DBSuper, I can't stand it because they make it solely based on power levels and transformations while at the same time saying it is not about that. Maybe it is me hating on Super but I think it killed many character personality and earned experienced that DBZ had built up.

Honestly. There is a decent chance and path for Mr. Popo to be a sort of Angel himself. Like Whis. And that could explain his familiarity with the beginings of a technique like Ultra Instinct. Both Whis and Popo are attendants tasked with the care of a God. Both are arguably more powerful than their god (a way to legitimize Popo keeping up with SSJ Trunks/Goten). It's up to Toriyamas notes, and now Toyotarou to go down the path in writing now... But in the future when expanding out the upper teir realm of the gods/angels, it could be written that Angels are only 1 type of attendant tasked with the care of gods. Djinn could be another type. How I might write things is... IDK. Say Popo was originally a Angel of one of the lost 6 universes. As a sort of demotion for a perceived failure on not guiding his god of destruction well enough, his form was changed after he alone was spared from the universes erasure (just like the 12 others were during the ToP arc). He was then retasked with a lesser teir god. Or even easier, the Genie/Djinn form may be a lesser form of an Angel, as they develop to one day evolve into a full Angel after having mastered Ultra Instinct themselves. They know the concept, and are above others with it. Just not full Angel levels. So I guess that could make Popo a sibling to Whis and the rest. Maybe... Well, Djinn are generally considered evil spirits. Maybe they were originally tasked with attending Kai's (Creators), while good Angels were tasked with Destroyers. A sort of opposite contrast. But again, you would need to explain the retasking of the Djinn to lesser gods. Likely just that Kai's were better attended to by those who they were training to replace them, and in their better nature... did not need attending to like GoD's and lesser gods.
