Really cool series! I just found the videos this morning and i really liked them. Overall, im impressed with how much thought generally went into the design of the castles, and how much fromsoft considered functionality AND level design. Its not an easy balance to strike and it makes me even more impressed with the game. For this castle I think you should have taken off more points for it's location personally. Literally no reason to build it where they did. I know it's not quite the same, but do you think you'd review leyndell, fort faroth, fort haight, or raya lucaria in the same vein? It might be interesting to see how the "civilian" buildings in ER hold up to analysis.

I'm glad you liked them, maybe i'll review fort haight and faroth, probably not leyndell and lucaria tho, because they're not really castles, so it doesn't make sense to hold them to the same standard as castles

I think there are a few factors on why the castle is the way that it is and all of them are due to the fantasy elements. The location of the castle is like that most likely to act like a fox hole. To hide them from the giants as well as the weather. Maybe the wind blows from that direction so it acts as a barrier to fight that cold, cause man does it look cold. Maybe thats another reason why the buildings are right in the front too, im not sure but maybe the layout can promote heat retention by limiting the space between the buildings. And finally, the lack of gates right before the keep could be tied to magic. As we see with Lyndell, you can make magic barriers so a normal gate could be useless against a giant or other fantasy enemy but a magic barrier could do the trick, but thats just my assumption.

The cliff at the beginning… It bothers me as well based on your criteria which makes sense. The only way I can think to excuse it is if you extend the boundaries of the castle to include the terrain as a natural defense and choke points. Essentially raining arrows off of the bridges you mentioned as well as using the narrow land bridge as a choke point to force single file marching. It also helps conceal the castle making it harder to find. But if you keep the castle boundaries in the castle walls, then the hidden castle falls pretty quickly if/when found and people drop in and open the gates for the rest of their army. The castle also has the natural defense of the cold. You did neglect to mention how the weather would make a prolonged siege not likely to succeed/occur especially when you consider the natural terrain making it unlikely that siege weapons get anywhere near the castle.

yep, i agree, any force trying to get to the castle could be cut in half trying to traverse all of that terrain in that wheather to get to the main gatehouse, if the castle was in an area with a more forgiving terrain, but still had that cliff next to it with that close a proximity, i would give the location a 1/3 at most if not 0

I feel like you should factor in the personnel defending the castle as the first bailey is guarded by two bladed lions and many of the buildings could be used as chokepoints by the teleporting knights and exiles. Most dangerous of all being the dual greatsword knight who is in a great vantage point over the castle and could quite easily spot and eliminate attacking officers.

I can tell you haven't watched the first video of this series, go ahead and check it out if you want to understand how I approach these reviews, but if you don't feel like it, I'll explain, so basically I only factor in the elements of that castle that correspond to the real world, so no flying creatures, no giant monsters, and no magical knights, I just take the castle as it's built, if there are some ruined parts, I assume they're not if I can reconstruct how they used to be in my mind. so I assume that the only ones defending and assaulting the castle are regular human soldiers.
@blizzardgaming7070

@@Rrash_VA I actually have seen the first video, I still think that you should factor in who defends the castle such as how the barricades to the left of the main entrance to Sol force any attackers to face the bladed lions instead of securing ground.
@Rrash_VA
@Rrash_VA 6 ай бұрын
@@blizzardgaming7070 again, bladed lions are not a real thing, they're unrealistic creatures, if I have to include those, I will need to be consistent and also include dragons, giant creatures and every other flying creature, which means they could be used to either protect or assault the castle, and at that point I wouldn't see any reason to have a castle in the first place, it would be useless, and I would rate it like a 2/10 or something. so basically imagine I take only the terrain around the castle, the castle itself and put it in the real world, and imagine how it would be defended and asualted by a normal medieval force with medieval technology. I hope you understand what my reasoning here.

I agree this isn't one of the better castles. I would point one thing out. In the event of a full siege it is likely they would destroy the wooden platforms within the bailey that make the second root into the castle possible. While all the buildings are only behind the first gate, all their entrances are elevated making the stone stairway during a siege the only way to actually access everything. The first bailey is also the lowest point on the castle. Once you get through that portcullis you pretty much walked into a shooting gallery.
@Rrash_VA
@Rrash_VA 6 ай бұрын
I agree, they could destroy those wooden platform, that would make it a lot harder for the assailants to get past the first Bailey, I suppose bringing ladders with them would be helpful, the other thing is; the wooden platforms don't look like temporary structures, or structures that are designed to be collapsed, and they're needed to get around the castle, so apart from the first and biggest wooden platform in the first Bailey, the other ones would need to be destroyed as the enemy advances, because they're needed to get to the defensive positions in the front, and again, they don't look like they're design to be easily destroyed, so doing it would be awkward as the enemy advances, so basically what has to be done is, upon getting the news that the castle will be attacked, they need to dismantle the first structure, and quickly get into position, they need to have a plan on how to go about destroying the other one quickly if the enemy advances further.

hey bro,I don't know why your views are so low😢I think this castle series is amazing.Your videos are professional and entertaining at the same time.I can tell that behind these are long time work and knowledge accumulated over time. I think your castle videos deserve 200k+ views each at least. I clicked the like button for your every video. I hope you meteoric rise soon. Excuse me for my poor English. By the way,do you know that your videos got 2 to 3 times of views on bilibili

Hopefully, the channel will get some momentum, I'll try not to give up, maybe you could help by sharing as much as you can, thank you, and no I don't know what bilibili is, is it another platform? I guess somebody has been stealing my videos without me knowing it, it's a shame but I suppose that's just how this works, maybe I can check that out and see if it can be resolved, thank you for letting me know.

Castle Sol doesn't even need much in terms of defences given its location in the Mountaintops of the Giants. All they had to do was put a keep on a high mountain accessible only by a narrow pass divided into multiple gatehouses and murderholes. Or better yet, they could have copied Castle Morne's homework. Given that the location of the castle is in a forbidden land that only a select few can even enter, it's not too surprising for the architects to be very sloppy in their design. You would think Miquella would have better architects on hand.

I googled it, if it's the one that shows up on Google search you're talking about, I don't think it has much to review, it's just a continuous, connected building, save for a couple towers, plus its proportions are cartoonish, so it won't even make sense to judge its defensibility.

Location is really bad. If an attacking army could get even one catapult on the cliff above the walls they could lob fire bombs and hit anywhere in the castle that has wooden structures.
