Good comparison. San martin really are at the limits of what's possible for a watch at this price. Their margins must be microscopic. I've had 3 of them and they have all been impeccably built and finished.

These homage watches are extreme value PERIOD! That being said there is a feeling you get when you own an original.

Great video! I have the Tisell Submersible for almost 4 years now and it's a great watch for the price point. I haven't handled a San Martin - I would love to get my hands on one. But unfortunately I've completed my homage collection. I started buying homage watches to mirror image all my higher end watches which I now only wear on special occasions. Really enjoyed your perspective. Your summary mirrors my view. It begs the question, should we be paying thousands to be able to tell the time with style? Or should we be happy with paying £200 knowing it will be pain free?

I'm not a "high-end" collector by any means, although I do have a few very nice pieces. However, the watches I find myself reaching for most often are a San Martin BB58 homage and a Steeldive 1970 Willard homage. The quality you get in some of these watches is just incredible. There are certainly a ton of crappy homages out there (I'm looking at you, Pagani 1662), but companies like San Martin and Steeldive really deliver a great product.

I had the SD but returned it. The 90 click bezel was one of the reasons. Now I realize it’s actually 120, I wish I kept it. I thought 120 or 60 would have been the better choice. I enjoyed the video. Thanks

San Martin is much prettier than the modern Rolex. Gorgeous retro design and excellent legibility thanks to the milsub hands and bezel markings.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s I can see not wanting an homage. But today people don’t really “need” watches it’s more of a personal want. I think people get pissed about homages because these days we are seeing that you don’t have to spend thousands to get a very well built nice looking watch that tells decent time. I’m not saying they’re stupid or wrong for paying a ton of money for a watch, but I don’t ever wanna spend thousands on a watch. At the end of the day buy what you like and enjoy it wether it’s expensive or not. Just don’t lie to yourself and try to convince others your homage is as good as the real deal. As far as clones and literal fakes go, I’m not big on that, but homages aren’t bad.

That SM looks great. It's almost not a homage watch (akin to an Oris 65, imo). The only change I'd make is to the crystal.

Nice review! I was actually more interested in the Tisell because I have never heard of this brand. I'm not sure how I missed it. I think the Tisell is a great looking watch. I'm quite impressed with the quality and value of Chinese watches. I don't understand how they make any money though. Their margins have to be incredibly low. If you're not hung up about wearing an homage watch, for the money some of these watches can't be beat.

My problem with them is kinda that I don't want something that looks too much like a rolex 2 meters away as someone might wanna pick me to rob, thinking its a Rolex and I am a good target with valuables on me :P

what would you guys say the most accurate submariner homage is (not vintage style, modern) is it still the SN019 from san martin? I don't like their logo too much so I am looking elsewhere

Love the MilSub and I do own the Steinhart 39 OVM. And while I'm not 100% satisfied with that one, either, the SM doesn't tempt me in this guise (I'm sure SM will revamp/tweak it in the future). 1. Why ceramic? Doesn't fit the vintage theme, since the MilSub is a 1970s diver. Same goes for: 2. Applied indices. Won't find those on a MilSub, either. 3. Boring dial - doesn't take any cues from the original, which I find a bit disappointing. Steinhart are doing a much better job in this regard. 4. Mismatched lume - the white on the hands looks a tad brighter than the one on the indices. 5. Handset slightly wrong: The minute hand's lume should be running parallel to the hand's shape at the tip of the hand. Read: There shouldn't be a triangular bit of steel at the tip of that hand. 6. Handset slightly too large. The OVM 39 has the same issue and it bugs me a little. Basically, the seconds and minute hands reach too far out into the minute-track and should be be slightly shorter. Check out a pic of the original MilSub, compare it to the SM and 39mm OVM and it becomes pretty obvious. 7. No crown-guards - those should be present on a MilSub homage. What I do prefer on this one is the general shape of the case (Steinharts have very straight lugs and don't sit very neatly on the wrist), the fact that it sorta comes without fauxtina and that they've gone for a low-ish, boxed crystal. The domed crystal on the Steinhart looks great in pics, but it makes the dial look "milky" under certain lighting conditions and shows a lot of reflections.

Tisell is rubbish, Lume on bezel fall off after 2months. SM killed all that weak sh*t like steinheart, squale etc.
