How Good Are Imperial Knights in Medieval 2: Total War?

Chiv Knights are the gold standard in MP that you want. Those are the units that win battles for you, they are insanely powerful. Imperial Knights are both stronger and cheaper - and they aren't even the HRE's strongest heavy cav. The HRE has the strongest cav in the game bar none and these units are (also) one of many reasons why.

They are worse than English Knights because slashing weapons have a hidden +3 attack vs spear units. Yes they are cost effective against chivalric knights but cannot break dismounted chivalric knights in a single charge, or conquistadores, or dismounted christian guard. They also struggle vs armoured sargeants and venetian heavy infantry. And will lose to any top tier cavalry that has armor penetration, like Royal Mamluks, Qapaqulu, Cataphracts, Teutonic Knights, Khans Guard and Mongol Heavy Lancers. They might even lose to fully upgraded Huscarls and Stradiots.

Haven't played medieval 2 - any particular reason you're not exhausting the infantry AI by kiting it with a single unit while the others rest?

The cav are good it’s just the dismounted one that is useless

Thanks for the comment. Hmm. Not fully sure about Gothics. They are the coolest looking cav but I guess I need to test them before forming the opinion :)
