So far, my interaction as both a Mercy and Illari player have been great! As Illari: I can focus on charging captive sun very quickly when having Mercy in my team by keeping my tank alive pretty well with her kit, and her damage boost have been very helpful in getting a few picks or making the enemies retreat and re-think on peeking us. As Mercy: I find that Illari is a great damage boost target when your dps are on their 'down time' like dead or somewhere I can't reach. It helps getting captive sun faster and apply consistent pressure. Her ult is a great thing to damage boost and personally I always flick to her when I hear the girl screaming in the air lol

tbh, I'm so glad you said her name correctly. it might not seem like much but my bf is peruvian as well and people say his name wrong all the time and i just feel like it's disrespectful to him and the culture. but other than that i've been enjoying mercy and illari together :)

Super informative and detailed video Skiesti! I definitely agree that the duo might not appear ideal on paper; my personal experience has been that their healing is relatively low compared to some other support duos, but with a more self sufficient team (the kind that would work with a comp like Mercy/Zen like Soldier, Mei, Roadhog, etc) they have opportunities for quite a bit of offensive synergy! The first thing I noticed on Illari's release was that she can trigger her Captive Sun explosion with just a damage-boosted full-charge body shot (instead of require a headshot or multiple body shots), so damage boosting her when she ults is a pretty solid idea since Illari herself often capitalizes best on her own ults in terms of timing/reactions (plus she gets a target strapped on her back when she's flying/glowing, so the pocket healing isn't bad either). And while the enemies are busy looking at Illari, that hopefully means your team can get by with just healing pylon and/or make some picks of their own while the enemies have their attention split. Of course, I'm speaking from my perspective in plat, so YMMV for anyone reading this comment

I imagine it's similar to Mercy/Zen where it's just a high damage-oriented comp that can steamroll if the enemy team doesn't make the appropriate swaps (to high mitigation/high damage comp; Zarya for instance)

Ive played nothing but illari since she came out, and i love playing with a mercy. The mercy tends to be able to get non-stop easy res off cuz i can protect her even better than Brig most the time. She between a res every 20 seconds, and healing pylon our team is pretty invincible even if the healing output isnt at its max potential

Yeaaaah there's a lot to it. Basically TLDR you can boost the initial throw, the detonation, and the sunstruck And yes, the sunstruck, even if someone dies before it bursts, is boosted

Before the nerf, these two played great together. Just pocket a DPS in range of the pylon and didn't even have to worry about healing.

The issue I’ve had is that Illari players right now think they’re DPS and will literally leave almost all the healing to you as well as completely ignoring you when you need healing. I’m in high GM and this is an issue

Illari mercy requires some discipline, Illari definitely needs to shift her priority to more healing, but even when she used her beam she can go dps for atleast 2-3s again so it's not hectic like on bap.

It's.... Pretty confusing LMAO There's 3 different points of damage you can boost 1. The initial throw (splash + direct DMG) 2. The shot to detonate 3. The sunburst after detonation You can damage boost someone else to detonate it as well and have additional damage done If an enemy dies before the sunburst detonates, it can still be boosted and anyone else that's near will take additional damage Depending on if the shot boosted is a headshot or a bodyshot, it will change the reaction Depending on if the shot boosted is on a tank or a squishy, it will also change the reaction

Noticed you don't use the "super-jump" technique much or at all. I tried the G.A off setting (from your Mercy settings video) and realised for some reason I could no longer do the super-jump which I found to be really awkward so I switched back. Maybe we don't really need to use super-jump? Or is there a way to still do it when GA is off?

You can still do it w/ Toggle GA Off. I have a whole video on how to do it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3LUiK1mgNqohqs The reason you don't see me superjumping much is because it triggers a 3 second cooldown and jumping high in the air, especially against enemies I know are good (Danteh was in this game on DPS), is incredibly risky and predictable

If they have an Illari. Don’t super jump. That goes for any hitscan. Esp with Illari, she will just shoot you down as soon as you SJ. And you can still super jump with toggle GA off, just have to hold shift and press ctrl after while still holding shift.

I admit that I am only a linguistics student, but nonetheless I will add my comments on the the pronunciation. The voice actor is from Lima, and thus her pronunciation of the Quechua name will be different from the iterations of Quechua spoken around Cusco (as areas around Lima speak type one Quechua while those around the southeast of Peru in more mountainous sections (such as Cusco) speak type two). The VA pronounces the name [ilˈʎari] (something akin to eel-YA-ree), which is more typical of Quechua 1 variations, while the more conservative Quechua 2 dialects of the areas near the old Incan capital of Cusco pronounce it more like [iˈʎari] (ee-YAH-ree). Of course there will always speaker to speaker be variations in pronunciation, but your replication of the voice actor’s pronunciation is likely accurate to the dialects of Quechua she has been exposed to, and is thus still accurate. That being said, as always, take stuff like this with a grain of salt as my research into this subject is simply in quick reading on phonetics articles and archives, and is not quite the same in weight as any linguist or phonologies specialized in Quechua.

TLDR, due to Quechua dialects and speaker differences, pronunciation varies between ilˈʎari (eel-YAH-ree) and iˈʎari (ee-YAH-ree) depending on person, region, etc. but Skiesti’s pronunciation echoes that of the VA and falls vaguely along the pronunciation variations, and is thus fairly accurate.

Note two - the ll sound (presented in my International Phonetic Alphabet transcriptions as ʎ) is far more forceful than the y used in the English style transliterations, sometimes sounding almost like an sh speaker dependent. It is worth looking it’s pronunciation up on an IPA guide if you want to nail it perfectly instead of approximating from other language’s sounds.

Personally I'm not a fan of Illari at all. She's more of a DPS than a support, which in my book is a negative, her voicelines are mostly annoying, and her origin story, while indeed quite sad, is extremely boring and bland. There's really nothing interesting about her as a character. As for gameplay, not my type of support, so I have no interest in playing her. When it comes to playing with her, I find it irksome just how much value she can get out of the pylon for basically no effort and very little skill expression. All of the skill involved comes from her DPS, which to me is not how it should be with a support.
