How Good is an Ultrasonic Cleaner?

Very Good!
Today we'll look at Ultrasonic Cleaners, and why you should have one if you're in the small engine repair business!
The entry level 3L ultrasonic cleaners can be purchased for about $150 Canadian and work good enough to clean lawnmower and chainsaw carbs.
If you're getting into cleaning dirt bike and atv carbs, you'll definitely need a 6L so they fit.
I've had mixed results with the ones found on Amazon, some only last months, while others last years. They're made with cheap components and are 100% disposable/replaceable.
When they break, it's most likely the diodes or resistors that have blown out on the circuit boards, and you can probably have them rebuilt (as I have) for about $50-$70).
I've spent a total of $905 Canadian on Ultrasonic Cleaners in the past 8 years. That averages out to about $113/year.
I can easily make $65 on 1 single carb clean, so they're definitely profitable, from an investment standpoint.

I'm a retired dentist. I used ultrasonic instrument cleaners every day. I really liked seeing you show a plastic slotted spoon to retrieve parts. Very smart. Ultrasonic waves generate cavitation, like a boat prop, which can pulverize rigid things. Please do not reach into the running cleaner. Not good for your bones.

I would no more consider putting my hand in an energized ultrasonic cleaner than a table saw - you just never know. Some of these cleaners run 240 watts of power which is about a third of a horsepower. Mason, an early researcher into ultrasonics, put various things including a frog into the standing column of water above his magnetostrictive transducer. The frog died. Cavitation in soft tissue is possible too. We might discover a cousin to the bends. :-) Innocuous looking things can fix us good er - - bad.

What's your experience? or "just spray with carb cleaner and use a wire to clean passages" "just use chem dip" but then others state"chem dip ruins the aluminum.

Nice video: I also have two ultra sonic cleaners similar to yours. I put hot water in the cleaners and put the detergent in a zip lock bag and then into the cleaner. Keeps the cleaner from getting gross and all the garbage stays in the bag. Then I empty out the bag and rinse the carb in hot water and air blow dry. Also I use a SS loose tea ball for the small parts, jets, etc. Works great. Many thanks for the video.

Some use plastic peanut butter jars. You might be able to leave an air gap above your small parts so the gunk could float off. I don't know and will find out when mine gets here! Sounds like I'll need to get another tea ball for tea:)

Yes seems crazy, but honestly the plug gets hotter and it takes to long! We boil the water in the kettle while I'm tearing the carb apart, super simple and works like a charm. Also, they seem to last longer. Thanks for watching!

The electronic parts that most often fails are electrolytic capacitors, not resisters and diodes. And there are various grades of these components, so replace them with the high-grade high-temperature tolerant type. Also, some types of cap failures will not even show up on ESR meters. A number of years ago, I replace some general purpose caps used in a commercial washer-extractor, their installation a rookie mistake made by the previous electrician, something he repeated several times. The caps were used to smooth the output of an AC-DC rectifier. Then fed into a voltage regulator before being used as a power rail for a computer. When ever the machine had been on for a long time or the ambient temperature rose to a certain level, the caps were unable to smooth the rectifier output, pushing the voltage regulator beyond its spec, causing them computer to drop-out, something that usually result in spurious signals from the computer, signals that would engage 230V contactors out-of-sequence resulting in sparks flying and circuit protection fault engagement. My solution was to replace the caps with some rated at 125 degC, caps manufactured by Vishay. To my knowledge the equipment has been running without fault for 4-1/2 years. If you're cleaning just a few small parts at a time you can save resources by using a ziploc bag. Fill the bath with warm water then put the cleaning flyuid and small items in the ziploc bag and seal. When it runs the waves still pass through the bag. Less chemicals are used and less cleaning of the bath afterwards. No small parts are lost either.

Might I suggest if a guy does larger parts frequently, and can not justify both sizes of cleaners, that they might buy the larger one and put the cleaning solution in a jar with the solution and set it into a tank of plain water. This would reduce his degreaser costs and still have a bigger machine when he needs it. Great, objective video without a lot of extraneous music or babble!

The reason they burnout is not due to the heating element but due to the water level being too low. Don't fill it to "just cover the parts", it needs to be filled to the top every time you use it (The top of the basket is a good indicator of where the water level should be)

@@victoryfirst2878 USA builds better quality things though...China isnt known for quality..id rather buy form USA than China but the price is probabyl three times as much as a chinese one or even more not to mention China ships thing shere to Canada for free...but for some dumb reason we have to pay customs fee in Canada for things we order fomr the States so that 400 dollar ultrasonic cleaner now goes to about 600-650...... and at that price you can gamble on China stuff that could last you 5 years or last 2 months.. more often than not it pays off for myself...it slike the actual carberator they sells the aftermarket parts for a fraction of the price than the actual store and work just as good.. but as you say it could just be rookies using the machines. so ill but into what youre saying and fill it to the brim it makes sense... less stress on themachine itself.. those are times most peopel dont know or would share so ty.

Yea but the price went from like 45 bucks to double that. WHY? Cause EVERYONE was getting free replacements. They ALL typically fail within the 90 day warranty so shop somewhere else for a better quality one. I have gone thru 3 of them. When the first one failed, I went to the store, bought a brand new one, took it back 2 days later for a free replacement. I have a spare on my shelf now, but none of them has lasted longer than 6 months

Make yourself some hangers that go across so you can hang freely longer items. Used these in a jewelry shop for years. We would then use an industrial steamer that was hot enough there was no water spots, dry right off perfectly clean.

When you go to buy a cleaner, look for a model that has a cooling fan to cool the electronic components. I’ve seen a few cleaners that had cutouts for fans on the bottom cover and on the circuit board, but didn’t have the fans!

I would use a ziploc bag for the part. I heard gasoline does a good cleaning job if you add gas to a jar, put part in jar, put jar into the basket, and fire up the UC. No heat of course. Why not use glass pellets for a shiny finish on your cleaned carb? It gives a satin/ glossy finish to the metal. You could also use a buffing wheel and polishing compound to get a good shine, then back into the UC to remove the polish from cracks. This is a great demo, many thanks! Harbor Freight has a 6L UC at 370 watts, for $170. It has good reviews. Amazon is such a gamble on UCs.

Yo need to try a good one. "Amazon" grade tools vs "professional" or "commercial" grade tools. There is a huge difference just like buying a Drill from harbor freight or buying one made by milwaukee the ultrasonic that I have came from the aerospace company that my dad worked at it ran almost 24hrs a day 7 days a week for years. after so many years they replace equipment with new even if there is nothing wrong with it. I got it from him 3-4 years ago and it still works great

The failure mode isn't usually anything on the PC board... It's the switch. A simple and cheap fix.

Good point to look out for, ours was sent to a friend whose good with electronics and he said the resistors and diodes we're melted. He bought some higher quality ones and installed them and it worked great. The switch on our broken ones are fine, because they still turn on, they just don't ultrasonic clean anymore because the boards are fried.

My issues with the carburetors is that they come really clean but they never seem to get the machine running well as a new carburetor. It's almost like they are throw away carbs. I have two carbs I've tried cleaning over the last week one causes the machine to back fire the other causes the machine to hunt. Rebuild kits are half the cost of a new carburetor so it's tough for small engines unless the carb is over $200. What's been your success rate on small engine carb rebuild?

Would you mind confirming if a basket that hangs over the rim of the basin is superior to one that sits on its base. I ask because, apparently, rubber feet coverings are used to keep the metals apart, as the transducers are directly beneath, which can wear away at the basin wall, often wearing out those rubber feet in a short space of time. However, it appears with the basket designed to rest on the rim this is not an issue. Many thanks.

I haven't noticed any difference, but yes one would think a hanging basket would allow for the transducers to work better as the base isn't contacting anything. The basket would "float" instead of sitting on the rubber feet. Like I said though, I use these everyday and now only use CO-Z brand ultrasonic cleaners from Amazon Canada, they work great, haven't returned one yet, use multiple times a day, every day.

The number of people that I know who have had to replace there ultrasound from CHINA is so vast that I could not put a number on that. My USA model which does not even have the manufacturer's plate is still running after forty years. They just do not make them like that any more. I fixed the unit years ago with some new electrical parts. That is it for the unit. Nice video too.

im wearing of this especially since its cinese make..theyre not know for quality. but when ive sepnt over 100 bucks on chinese stuff which is rare this will only be the third time ever in life im 43.. i bought a wire stripper it was 200 bucks it worked very well and made form high quality steel but i just couldnt justify the pruchase becasue i wasnt getting enough wire so i went to a cheaper solution for stripping...so i sold that it was ok. i also bought a wleder that so far has be fine doing small jobs around my place it was i think 200 bucks for a 3 in one welder. mig tig, and stick and flux core also which is pretty much same as mig but anyway it works ok and now im going to try this and i hope it works..i clean carbs often . alot on the summer so this should make my money back ..and hopefull save me money on gumout i go through probably 100 dollars worht of those in a summer season anyway so this would pay for that..the whole setup cost me 200 bucks the ultrasonic cleaner and the cleaning solution.

I did some research on ultrasonic cleaners and the ones that are made in China that you were buying off Amazon have maybe a year warranty through the factory if you wanna try and send it back to them however I did find a company that’s in the United States that makes them here and guarantees them for 10 years and they are made to run all day long every day the cheap Chinese ones they tell you not to run them for more than 30 minutes at a time or you will burn them out but the American made ones are $3000 and they’re guaranteed to last for 10 years so you’re looking at about $300 a year cost for owning one I guess if you wanna look at it that way you have to consider how much you’re putting into the Chinese ones to keep them running. Jim, since we switched to the CO-Z brand of ultrasonic cleaners, and fill them with fluid to the top, we haven't had any issues! I have a 3L and 6L for the bigger Vtwin dual barrel carbs. they're working great and we use them everyday, they were cheap and are Chinese brand. The US ones aren't worth that kind of investment!

We use a similar technique with small jets in a jar. But I've never tried a plastic bag, the ultrasonic vibrations may destroy it, no?

@@EliminatorPerformance Actually no, it works well. The wave pass thru the bag just make sure you dont have any sharp corners. Some times I use a peanut butter jar (plastic). I use water in my cleaner and then carb cleaner in the bags that way it doesnt evaporate and you dont need 6 liters of it. Then when I'm done i pour it through a cloth into storage container. That filters out the dirt and make finding the small parts easier too. Try it just use the heavier quart or gallion bags.

Mark, you are correct. in my lab, we fill the ultrasonic cleaner with regular water, degas it while we prepare solutions to use in smaller vessels that fit inside a lid designed to hold beakers in place, over the but not on the transducers. These accessory lids are available and designed for this purpose. Saves you money by ONLY using the cleaning solution amount needed to clean your individual items. You can clean with different solutions a the same time since each system is independent. Ziplocks are a clever way of accomplishing the same thing.

Thanks for a great video. Don't know if this has been mentioned already, but you aren't supposed to pour boiling water straight into the tank. The ultrasonic transducer is fastened to the bottom of the tank by an extremely hard and brittle cement (if it were soft it would absorb too much ultrasonic energy). Sudden temperature changes can stress this cement (the tank expands before the transducer warms up and expands), creating a big force across the cement which can make it crack. If it cracks badly enough the transducer can actually fall off the bottom of the tank. Even slight cracking will reduce the ultrasonic power getting into the tank. That's the theory. In practice you can usually get away with it, so maybe it doesn't matter. But if you do want the water to be hot, it's better to use the built-in heater, which heats the water up very slowly, allowing all the parts to warm up together, eliminating the thermal stresses. I haven't heard about the heater causing the electronics to blow up. I'm not sure why it would, to be honest, but maybe the cheaper tanks have design flaws?

Perhaps the best way would be to add my cleaning solution, then room temperature water, then measure how much extra I would need using hot water from my kettle, so that I could add my hot water last. @@EliminatorPerformance I just wanted to add that little precaution so that people watching know the full story. It is only a "theoretical" concern anyway, but some of the ultrasonic cleaners I've owned did come with that warning. I would think that if you've been putting hot water straight into the tank for this long, then your particular machines are well able to cope with it. I don't think you should change what you do! One of the most indepth ultrasonic cleaner videos on KZbin. Just a thought, with the electronics in these cleaners being so delicate, would it be worth while to invest in an electrical filter ? I believe that a computer battery back up surge protector could act as a filter, and provide clean electricity to these cleaners. This may increase the longevity of these units.

I'm not sure if a surge protector would help, but it's worth a try! Like I said, I don't run the heaters because I've had bad luck with them, and now that I boil the water, I've had no issues!

I just remembered something someone did a few years ago Eliminator. This gentlemen used a electric oscillating sander attached to a large heavy plastic food storage jar. The jar was attached to the bottom of the soft sponge pad of the sander. He would just put part and solution into the jar and tighten down the lid. Suspended from the ceiling with a rubber bungee cord. The carburetor was spotless cleaned in fifteen minutes. He said it was way more efficient than an ultrasound. Well that is my two cents alternative. Peace vf

That's weird since that kind of vibration wouldn't produce much cavitation. For all intents and purposes, a oscillating sander is extremely low frequency.

@@1992jamo That is true Max, but it works. Most certainly not as professional and a little bit cured as ultrasound but gets the job done for way less money and time. I guess personal preference has a lot to do with it.

The soda bicarbonate isn't actually a cleaner, it's just used as a media for blasting. I use it because it's water soluble, so I can blast a carburetor that's really dirty, then ultrasonic clean it and they turn out looking like new

those carb and choke cleaner cans are no longer 6.99 they are about 10.99 but i find the stright carberator cleaner Gumout works better and its a bigger can but its about 2 dollars more thats if you can find it. those smaller carb and choke cleaner cans go fast. the bigger ones last a bit longer..and i find they work better..

@@EliminatorPerformance i buy gumout all the time ive never really looke dinto what else works good for carbs..but i bought one of these tonight ..i mean i think i can justify it i work on mower, snowblowers basically small engines , hopefulyl this will clean them better and good ..ill try it out i think itll pay for itself ..but i like doing it the old fashioned way helps me stay knowledgable of putting them together and taking them apart..but i look forward to trying it this weekend...i work outside so this i think will allow me to do it in the garage wihtout spraying carb cleaner everywhere

With all these problems and cost why don’t you use a 3-gal carb dip $27.99 instead of a Ultrasonic Cleaner? No switches, diodes no electrical etc. Seems to me the dip cleans much better.

The ultrasonic cleaners are by far superior, and as long as I don't use the heater, I haven't had any issues. I use my ultrasonic cleaner daily and haven't had issues with this model. At the end of the day, these things are built in China so they're bound to have issues. At least I get refunded on amazon.

They have to be, resistors get HOT and the heat needs to vent out.

Yes they need to vent the heat, I've never got them wet, but I've overloaded them before. Like I said $70 to rebuild the board and they last me another few months, then onto a new one lol thanks for watching!

Tommyr I figured that, just seems like a odd spot and cheap engineering. They could have put a shield with a fan or something. But I have no idea about them so I’ll leave it to the people who actually use them 😂

If you don't fill them up they will blow up and the heater will tax the system if you use high heat

As far as the level of liquid, I suggest a person follow the manufacturer's guidance. If the liquid is not at a sufficient level you can burn up the unit.
