Agreed. I am a photographer who started making videos, cos well you kinda have to. After ditching PP and got DR, I found @DarrenMostyn. Copied his node tree and never bothered too much with others anymore. It's damn perfect, actually overkill for what I do atm, but it makes sense to me. Always clear, thorough, concise, perfect speed. I'm neurospicy and start skipping when ppl waffle on like I've never touched a computer before, so good speed in tutorials is super important to me. Bought studio version a week later, cos there was no going back to PP once the color page clicked with me (thanks to Darren)...

This is a real tribute to the work the Dehancer team have put into making their tools artistic as well as technically accurate emulations, I'm constantly on the fence about buying it and your discount is making it very tempting! Just thinking about another comment here, I wonder if you've ever considered doing a few videos trying to recreate the signature look of a particular series or movie that has caught your eye recently? I just finished watching Shogun and the choices they made to build that look are fascinating, lots of natural light and very characterful anamorphic lenses. Would be amazing to hear your thoughts on how you'd approach a similar project, if you think that'd be helpful to people 😊

The one thing that frustrates me with that tool is the black level fading it has that's inescapable, other than a node with Black Offset moved down afterward. Thanks for yet another great tutorial 👌 How come you don't use an adjustment layer for the setting you use on all your clips? If there are many different scenes, I can see the problems but for one-minute videos in one setting for example, wouldn't it be better to put Texture, DeHancer/Film Look, DWG->709 on an adjustment layer? Maybe even a base layer of contrast and/or saturation for example.

I have a pressing question I haven't found an answer to. Being a colorist maybe you can help me. I use a Mac Book Pro m2 Max chip as well as one with an Intel chip. On both computers, I have noticed that the video I exported after color grading it in Davinci resolve, does not look the same. Inside DR it looks great but the exploited one looks less saturated and does not have the same contrast I added when I color-graded it. I have Googled for a response and what I see its a lot of people experiencing the same (using premiere Pro as well as Savici resolve) but no real confirmation or solution. This leads me to believe is a MAC issue and not a Davinci Issue, but I am hoping there is a solution to make the exported file look as close as possible to what was graded in DR. I am using DR 19 latest beta and my monitors are calibrated for REC 709. HE:LP!
@BobbyDjorgas
@BobbyDjorgas Ай бұрын
davinci can be a bit confusing when it comes to this. im on my phone and dont know the details by heart, but in a nutshell you'll have to set up both davinci and your project properly in order for your exports & youtube uploads to look like what you're seeing in resolve when you're color grading. on your project, make sure to set your color to davinci yrgb, and timeline and output to rec-709a. on davinci's options you'll have to click on 10-bit precision something or other, as well as an option that tags clips to rec709a. also, when u deliver, make sure to export with color and gamut set to rec-709a. this should guarantee you a 1-1-1 export. if you know how to do a cst workflow, u can select "davinci widegamut" on the timeline setting of your project settings rather than rec-709a. hope this helps!
@PersXpress

@@BobbyDjorgasDaVinici Resolve is not the problem, but KZbin makes a mess of it and also throws compression on top of it. Your explanation is otherwise correct. I already wrote this 'manual', but that is no longer necessary 😀 Unfortunately, many people review videos via KZbin. However, this gives a completely wrong image on your screen. Coincidentally, a funny pun. So always pay attention to whether you are working on a PC or a Mac and choose the correct output. As a press media company, we always remind customers that they should not review the video via KZbin.

I appreciate for ur effort but If blackmagic really serious about the look development tool they need to put so much effort on to this, like baselight has chromogen tool , otherwise its a very basic tool...

The grain is just a layover - LAME. It needs its own compound node. I Instantly disregarded it after I adjusted the size of the grain and I saw the whole thing get bigger. That’s not how grain works. Cheap emulation makes me cringe. It’s been almost ten years since Yedlin made his emulation publicly known. We should have indistinguishable emulation by now. Some have achieved the essence well enough.

Darren you're such a great educator as well as colourist! I was wondering if you could do a video on 'proofing'. Doing colour work on for example, a Benq calibrated display, but then content when viewed by most people on a Macbook Pro XDR P3 1600nits display/standard profile - the blacks look crushed because the way the screen tech can display blacks. So isn't it better to do colour work on an XDR display if you think most viewers will view your content on that display? It's a bit confusing to understand how to work when thinking the end viewer isn't in a controlled environment! Any wisdom on this in a vid?

Thanks for the kind words, but I grade on a calibrated monitor without compromise. What it is viewed on after Ive graded it is out of my control.

@@DarrenMostyn I guess that's the answer I'm actually looking for. I use a calibrated BenQ Sw272U which I know and love from my photography background. I've just had clients want grade changes made which are clearly because of their own viewing setup as per my monitor and scopes, I can see what's going on. I advise them but ultimately give them what they want. I guess it's been a bit of a minefield trying to see if I can control something, that I can't control :D And I guess on location client reviews is the ultimate way to avoid those situations. Thanks for the reply!
