@@goodhertz To my knowledge, there's no way to autogain this plugin. The calibration slider is just a calibration slider : you set more or less drive into the plugin. It doesn't replace an autogain. The worst feature is the fact the mix knob is before the output gain. To me it doesn't make sense. But anyway it's an amazing plugin, it sounds great and is a pleasure to use... In terms of tube boxes there is Freqport - Freqtube FT-1. I think there may have been some issues mentioned on forums but can't remember what. there is also the whitestone audio P331 but that only has one kind of tube. One seems more subtle than the other but there are so few audio examples it makes me think maybe they haven't taken off.

Do you think that i you are mixing with lots of saturation and compression, if it would be advantageous just to run a session at a higher sample rate, like 96kHz? I specifically mean in terms of not having to upsample and downsample as often if you are using plugin chains where the majority of your plugins would be doing this anyways. I know there are some advantages for timestretching audio at higher sample rates as well, but I am primarily interested in which approach would be more computationally efficient.

Makes me wonder if the history of audio recording happened some other way, what other kinds of distortion would we enjoy but just don't realize it because it wasn't an artifact of the tech. For example what if audio hardware was somehow based on seashells and there was some spirally sloshy echo effect we would have liked but we haven't happened upon it yet.
@samuelbolduc696

Exactly like if audio where digital at first. I'm probably sure we would not like analogue as much because it would be no more nostalgic... I am sure the digital sound would have been nostalgic as much as analogue is and a lot of peoples would say that was way better before ahah.
@Rami-bi9xj
@Rami-bi9xj Ай бұрын
@@samuelbolduc696 i dont really know how accurate this perspective is since the reason why people prefer analog over digital is because audio in analog is a continous signal unlike digital which is bits , the difference between analog and digital is very noticable when you start adding effect like distortion & etc that digital does not have the information because its a bunch of limited one's and zeros instead of a smooth voltage signal and of course nostalgia absolutely plays a role too
@samuelbolduc696
@samuelbolduc696 Ай бұрын
@@Rami-bi9xj the reason why people’s prefer analog is mainly because they used to know that. As soon as we could use digital to process audio or to record, all the industry started to use it because it is so much more convenient. Digital Audio is not only samples, when you add a low pass filter it becomes the exact same continuous signal than before. Thinking that digital audio is only samples that can’t be connected together is really not knowing how it works. even you add effects , if the effect is created outside the computer, digital audio won’t nul the effect. and you won’t be able to know which one is it in a A/B test anyway.
@Rami-bi9xj
@Rami-bi9xj Ай бұрын
@@samuelbolduc696 thats also a factor, turning physical knobs can be stimulating and provide much better feedback and more integrated workflow that analog provides but digital doesnt, but as you said digital is more convenient and offers better flexibility. "Thinking that digital audio is only samples that can’t be connected together is really not knowing how it works" my comment was not adressing effects because i was talking about quality difference of dry signal, digital effects are a world of their own and they are personally the most enjoyable aspects of manipulating audio
@samuelbolduc696
@samuelbolduc696 Ай бұрын
@ I totally agree with you about analog being physical so it can be more direct and I feel like your brain understands that more than anything. But I have to admit that it dosent mean this sounds better, it just means that I feel better. And I will admit this is important

Wytse, if you want a GREAT "tube box" that uses alot of different (and very uncommon tubes), there is none better than the Thermionic Culture Vulture Mastering Plus. Designed by Vic Kearney (he was a designer on the original RCA tube console), I have 3 separate versions and they all get used regularly (I use my custom Mastering Plus version for, well, mastering, and then I have the Vulture Super 15 and the 20th Anniversary Vulture which I use all over the place). Actually I believe Thermionic Culture has just come out with a new special edition of the Culture Vulture, might be called the "Ultra Vulture" or something like that. You would love it, I'm sure. For your purposes, I would say just make sure you avoid the "standard" Vulture. The special editions and the Mastering versions have detented controls and better matched tubes.

Hey Whitse, I agree with you about oversampling, I only use digital tubes, amps and comps/limiters with oversampling to get a better melodic result in the first place. It is as you as said. To describe what you just mentioned is this: imagine yourself standing in a sports hall with a gumball in your hand and you throw it in a curve, so the ball keeps flying until it hits the wall. And at the moment it hits the wall there are two ways the gumball might continue bouncing back (the Nyquist point) from that wall: up to the ceiling or back to the ground. If it flies upwards to the ceiling, it may land everywhere and you can't really detect, where to fetch it (no oversampling) , but if it bounces downwards you can clearly see where it could be catched (oversampling). Hope I described this concept well enough. :D If I'm wrong with it, please feel free to correct me.

Im totally aware of what the explanation of oversampling is. (not that i think it tells me alot in therms of meaning, nor that im so shure many out there possibly feel much about a technical explonation (besides that something gets added without oversampling , whatever it is, or that its kinda "un", "unsomething" (unharmonic))) still: i wanted to say that in i personally turn oversampling rather off cause my taste, last time when i told you about my decision to turn it off. this is my subjective oppinion.
@erewrw1906

I'm using a VST that emulates the sound of the S950, which is similar in principle to a bitcrusher (though more subtle) and there is also part of me that is nostalgic for the tinny sound of terrible mp3s. Dubstep did seem to love that bitcrushed sound, and there is definitely a love for low-bit video game music. I have to wonder if there will eventually be a resurgence for the imperfections of lower-grade digital when ultra-high sample rates become the norm with improved technology. I am definitely sceptical of claims that people inherently like analogue saturation for any other reason than it has a recognisable and familiar character and it's louder.

Actually, such a resurgence has already been going on to a certain extent. Goodhertz (the same ones as in this video) was the first to try their hand at it with their plugin "lossy", which is a plugin specifically dedicated to replicating lossy compression. Since then a couple of companies, mostly the more creative ones imo, have thrown their hat in the ring, abberant DSP's Digitalis is a whole digital degredation suite in one plugin, unfiltered audio's LO-FI-AF is a general use digital and analog lofi effect chain thing, and there's even a simple free one called Codec.
