Even though Keanu's mandarin was robotic in The Day the Earth Stood Still, it still works given the story. When he speaks english it obviously sounds more natural, but he tries to not show emotion because he's playing an alien.

hey Rita! Aspirated T like Keanu does -- we do that when we're super pissed off or when we want to particularly emphasize something (usu. ... something that is pissing us off!), it's a definite anglicism, idk if knowing that will help you but its something a non-native speaker might not notice.

Hi Rita, I just checked out the information about your Bootcamp. It looks very interesting and exciting. I am a beginner Mandarin learner who lives in Taiwan. I know that one difference between the Chinese used here and that used in mainland China is Traditional versus Simplified characters. However, as your course focuses on pronunciation, will it be useful for me, or are there many differences in pronunciation in the two countries as well?

Hi Patricia! There are some differences in terms of accents that you’ll hear, but in terms of a very standard Mandarin that you’ll hear across the Chinese speaking world, they’re quite similar. It will definitely still be useful and also help you to hear the sounds clearly as produced by all standard Mandarin speakers. Good luck in your learning process! Hope to see you in the bootcamp 💪💪

In spite of living in a culture where Mandarin is spoken all around me, I don't get very much opportunity to practice, as I am an English teacher, and work in situations where I am not allowed to speak Chinese to the students or to my colleagues. I have signed up for the bootcamp. I hope that my best effort will be enough to help me make significant progress during these three months. I wanna correct something: in English and Chinese, people speak loudly and more clearly for key information, but not for common constructions that don't attribute information. This is because Chinese and English are both stress-timed languages. Whereas in Spanish, a syllable-timed language, every word is important and has its own stress.

Hahah! I love any time an actor tries speaking a language for a film. It's such a challenging thing to do, especially since not much effort tends to go into it compared to other aspects of the acting (with good reason). But he did quite well!

Keanu Reeves is the biggest hack in cinematic history. If it wasn't for the matrix he wouldn't have an acting career. He doesn't know how to act, he has always the same expression on his face (that's why he works in john wick, if they had casted Liam neeson then john wick would also have a personality, but I guess an emotionless keanu also works in that role xD). Terrible actor... No wonder he is even miserable speaking chinese even though he's half chinese, or a quarter or whatever.

He is just as bad in English! He always speaks like that… it’s just worse in mandarin because he make no effort to attempt to pronounce anything properly. Holy crap… 7, 8, 5, 5. My mandarin is trash, but it’s way better than his. I’d give him a 2 at best.
