Well, yes.. but what’s properly? The speed limit is one thing, but as Kyle points out, the lane keep assist system is just supposed to work in the background. While you do the driving.

@@omelvold I would like to know what Porsche had in mind of “properly” as well. Paying extra for a feature that “kind of sort of” helps you drive seems strange to me with the advent of other manufacturers coming to market with more accurate systems. I think she has been a bit spoiled with the Tesla system which in my opinion is a different design philosophy

@@PumpUptheJam81 Coming from a Model S, I actually prefer the Audi way (which I presume is similar to Porsche), where the system is actually just there to make you a better and safer driver. It’s always on, regardless of wether you’re using ACC or Innodrive. Not hard ON/OFF and lots of ding dong. It’s two completely different things. Now, I have driven on American motorways. And I see the need for a system that can go in a straight line without any input from the driver. 😉 I guess in Germany, they drive so fast that you want to hold the steering wheel at all times. Jokes aside. From what I understand, VW is now starting to use swarm data for more of a “selv driving” like experience on the MEB platform. I can’t imagine Porsche being any worse.. I guess that will be a fourth option when you configure the car then. 🙈 Good thing you can buy/rent these features OTA.

I think girls not just not interested in these testing “she is yawning thinking just stay with the Tesla if you want to go hands free” lol I say do what Porsche does the best. Go fast around the corners😂

Your wife is absolutely right. The software in the Taycan is very inferior, especially compared to Tesla, but compared to a lot of companies. I’ve been driving mine now for over a year and it is an AMAZING car but they really dont put the money and effort into the software like they do with the engineering of the car and the comfort/luxury. I am fine with that trade off tho, but I would be very happy if they stepped up that software significantly.

Yeah the GM super Cruise is better, BMW is, Hyundai/kia is better(LMFAO, ioniq 5 beast), and VW is at least on pad Taycan is amazing but the nickel and diming with Porsches options hurts certain cars. Its what makes the macan overpriced and cayenne overpriced in their normal forms, no question there's superior competition, panamera is also not so good. The 911 is much more special so it gets a pass, taycan same thing. Taycan is a good purchase, especially in mamba green

Kyle, PLEASE add THIS TO YOUR TESTS! There is one evaluation point that I would greatly like to see and was not covered in these Hogback tests. It's the ability of the car to slow for curves anticipated to be too sharp for the existing vehicle speed or speed limit. Think of curve signs with speed riders. This is a game changer for any lane control system and/or adaptive cruise control.

Yep, it's what makes the macan, cayenne, panamera overpriced products, the competition is superior do not buy them overall The 911 and taycan are much more special though, their sports cars are worth it. Which one do you own?

16:30 1000% agree with alyssa on this - a beep of the horn can mean many things “hey/watch out/F you/help” and is not something i’d necessarily think twice about passing by. a long, sustained horn sound gets annoying and would definitely grab my attention.

Time to plug n charge: 1:58 - 3:28 This is 90 seconds...with rfid card it is usually 40-45 s afair (being one of the slower cars to start charging).

I am not a fan of the Porsche InnoDrive in my Taycan either. Here in Europe my Taycan is also overtaking cars, while in InnoDrive, which are in a left lane from the lane, which I am using. Which is legal in the US, but not in Europe. BMW does everything perfectly in the X5 45e. You start to really trust that system, which is also more intuitive to use, as all controls are directly on the steering wheel, while on the Porsche they are on a stick to the left. I am hoping for updates to improve InnoDrive.

Its good that you showed how to add the various driver assist features to the car OTA. Had heard this but never seen a video on how to do it or the pricing. This is a terrifiic feature since many Taycans come through with those options. If buying a previously loved Taycan without InnoDrive it good to know it can be added so easily. While you deducted so many points for touching the line fortunately the car never did anything dangerous. I have never experienced any phatom braking in my Taycan or etron as well. I find the system is useful despite the inferior perforance comnpared to Tesla.

I mean it's not just Tesla, there are many other superior systems. Tesla is no longer far in the lead anymore And it's not good, Porsche has the worst options, option pricing and standard equipment on the planet. The nickel and diming is rough.

The honest opinion comes out when you're with your GF and it's a 50 minute no-cut drive. Thanks for the video! Can you do one for the e-tron GT next? On the Audi the "innodrive" comes standard, no additional purchase required.

Due to the “age” of the car, the Innodrive system is a generation behind the TravelAssist in that Golf. Keen to see how the system works in the e-Macan.

I think you need to recheck your points. At 30:04 you were at 6 point, then you deducted 3 points but by 30:10 you are at zero points. I think Alyssa double deducted 3 points. Maybe I missed the reason for the second 3 point deduction in the spot.

I think the ID cars have the same thing as innodrive builtin as standard called eco assist in D mode, which can be something like a zero pedal driving.

Yes, and in the Audi it’s called Predictive Regen. It works independent from ACC but will take navigation into account. Coming from the Model S, I love it. It’s like the best of two worlds. You can coast until you approach a lower speed limit, another car or a road crossing. And it will keep the speed down in stew downhills etc. Then you can disable it temporarily by tapping the accelerator gently or add more regen with the paddles or brake pedal. Sounds complex, I know, but it’s really relaxing and efficient way of driving. Comfortable for the passengers too.

Kyle, I did want to suggest one more editor note that you could put at the end of your ADAS test. That is the maximum speed allowed to be set. The Taycan can be set at 162mph as I recall, which is Vmax.

Buying a ~$100,000 vehicle and then having to pay extra for these things is sheer insanity. I happen to be aware of Toyota, since I own one, but for the past five years, every car they make and sell in the US has included its "safety suite" with adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and the other usual driver aids. And I expect there are a number of other manufacturers that do essentially the same thing. (Note: Yes, you could buy a Yaris within this period without these systems, but that's a Mazda 2 made by Mazda in Mexico, so that's why I chose my words above quite carefully.) At any rate, I think this offers a good opportunity for your new test -- indeed, get your hands on a garden-variety Corolla or Camry -- or equivalent -- and see how well that does on your test. "Gosh, how much better are the systems in more expensive cars that you have to pay extra for if you want them?" You might also consider "ergonomics" in your criteria -- I expect most vehicles are relatively similar, but I rented a Hyundai Tucson a few years ago which had lane centering, and the button to enable it was one of those buttons to the left and below the steering wheel -- to pick that out of a row of eight buttons was insane. That's where buttons for functions that you might set once when you first get the vehicle are just fine, but not for things you'll use every day!

Innodrive is called predictive ACC on the Audi. Never will take a car without. Once activated you can take the food off the gas&brake.

This video works much better watching it at 2x speed. You can see how it floats in the lane. My Volvo xc40 does the same thing. Using it almost makes it look like a drunk driver is behind the wheel. It’s going to take a lot more models and AI to smooth the wave.

What was the setting on your adaptive lane keeping? I had 2 settings on an Audi A3 and one of them was “long” if I recall correctly and the other “short”. If I set in on long it was behaving the same.

My VW Golf acts the same. I have always used active lane control as a warning, so if I did something stupid like take my eyes off the road to change the radio and started to wander towards a white lines it reminds me to focus on the road.

@29:50 it popped up an alert asking the driver to take over, for half a second in a grey or white color, no audio alert. Then as it approaches the curve and drifts out of the lane it just silently turns off the ADAS. Jeeezus. NHTSA hasn't gone after any of the OEMs over "ghosting ADAS disengagement" is absurd. Meanwhile giving Tesla shiz over Boombox, where it has no evidence of being a danger to anyone let alone beyond the upper speed limit of where the pedestrian sound is even required... "Endangering Ghosting ADAS Disengagement" EGAD!

I've been binging all of these ADAS trials and that's what I keep thinking. If Autopilot acted like ANY of these other systems there'd be HUGE outrage and everyone would be wanting it to be recalled. How hypocritical.

@@moonw0man there's a lot more of those vehicles, but it depends on the system, some of them do alert properly. Tesla naming it "autopilot" is rough though and by design, it doesn't even have lane change. But yeah I agree they would be gone after more, annoying double standard.

The Taycan has PID w active lane keeping from the factory you will not need to go into the Taycan's account and subscribe it already has the software & hardware. If you get a car with just ACC no PID you can do what's shown in the video & purchase a PID subscription.

How aggressive is the ACC in terms of follow distance at minimum settings? Have a Taycan RWD on order and curious if it'll function well in heavier stop and go traffic to reduce other cars from constantly cutting in

I have my RWD for about one year now, it's a great car! The follow distance is oke, sometimes I get other cars to jump the gap. We have the 2 second rule and I would subscribe the gap as exactly that.

Alyssa, that was such a funny comment about Kyle literally specing his Taycan every day. I had spent several months deciding on my options as well. It is amazing how bespoke a Taycan or any Porsche really is. Is Kyle getting deviated stitching? I know he’s getting paint to sample. I hope he gets the carbon fiber back lit sill plates with “Out of Spec” custom emblem or at least the black aluminum. 😎 I love the second zinger as well, when he says the golf was measurably better but it was only two points different and that was because he took off the subject of three points for weaving a bit in the lane which is OK. I personally do not notice that on my car, it’s traffic jam facility is excellent I can add, I have gone through many occurrences and it will start and stop and start and stop and stay in the line quite well. Thanks for the test and entertaining commentary.

This might sound odd but can you do a review of normal cruise control versus adaptive cruise control and give a rating? I find the average person out there thinks adaptive cruise control like Autopilot is dangerous but doesn't realize normal cruise control is a death trap. Oddly enough NHSTA says normal cruise control is safe.

I’ve driven so many of these systems now. They seem to improve with time and experience. Pretty much all of the systems I’ve tried had the same issues here in the UK

Which confirms the belief that newer does not mean better. My 2015 Tesla Model S with AutoPilot version 1 is massively better than this InnoDrive. AP1 is used by me on the highway with 100% confidence in its ability to stay dead center in the lanes and track around corners with confidence. InnoDrive literally drives drunk and would leave me way more stressed than comforted.

@@joemcdonough7509 no shit, it doesn't even use swarm data silly Just now the VW travel assist now uses swarm data and is superior then this $110K taycan even. And as we've seen there are multiple systems just as good as Tesla's, but also cheaper. (Tesla charges $6K for enhanced autopilot to get lane change, and a few other basic things).

Which auto drive system do you like better, the Porsche or the Tesla? I don't really like autopilot that much in my model y performance. I don't like how the steering is so firm when it's on and if I try to make a lane change or correction, it really fights me. And I don't think it's that great for holding in a turn either. But just curious which you think is better

Kyle, this is unrelated, but could you possibly do a video on how to schedule charging with a taycan for preferred times with a max charging percentage?For example, if you have a off peak cheaper electricity rate from 12am-6am and you want it to charge during that time to a max of 85%. It’s very simple in my tesla, but I rented a Porsche and honestly couldn’t get it to work properly even after watching another video. Figured since you have more experience with Taycan you may know.

FYI - 2022 Taycans do not have FOD download yet for ALC even if you have ACC. No one knows why.

Kyle, as a 2020 Taycan owner I agree that the plug in charge is not available as a retrofit, I had checked with Calvin who did help me spec my car. At 9:39 You are speaking of the features of InnoDrive and beyond just the slowing down four corners based on bank information to know a good maximum speed it also has more functionality on ICE vehicles where it knows to downshift for hills and how to handle downhill grades. I had specked the in InnoDrive with active lane keeping as well as night vision and of course the 360 camera. I think all of those decisions were worthwhile, I did miss adding the massaging seats would you remind me about in almost every video. ☹️☹️☹️

EQS had plug n charge out of the box. It’s truly the right way. Porsche’s electricity America wrapper app is … terrible. Anything bypassing that is worth it.

I'd be interested to see this also in the Taycan. I'm intimately familiar with the NVA camera in the Panamera and the Cayenne, where the camera is mounted way-too-low on the front of the car (bad angle but also really bad for dirt on the lens -- it should be mounted up behind the rear-view mirror at top of the windshield) and in which the camera lens is too narrowly angled (so you can't see things at the side of the road within about 20 feet ahead of the car -- it seriously needs a high-quality wide-angle lens). But aside from that, I think that infrared cameras should be standard (or optional) in all cars because they really help at night, cutting through glare and showing animals/people where there's no light shining, as well as cutting through fog in both daylight and nighttime -- just a hugely important safety feature.

With a disabled driver, the car should be able to pull over with hazard lights on . Stopping in the middle could be dangerous

That requires far more complex logic than just stopping with the hazards on - something closer to full self-driving, to recognise when it's on the right-lane (or hard shoulder), vs. e.g. a slip road, and when to cross lanes without impacting other traffic (not just avoid direct collisions, but also not cutting in too close in front / behind other traffic, etc). It's doable, with the right software, but the Porsche software isn't to that level, yet

Very concerning is not the drunk driving lane bobble but it’s the Green Wheel lane departure with no warning. None of this inspires confidence, so you in turn become a nanny for the driver assistance which doesn’t help reduce fatigue on a long road trip. So this is a drivers car not meant to be on the straight highways of Kansas with assist. 😉 Surprised it got a sign off. 🫣

Hi Kyle. Great video. From my understanding from Porsche the Innodrive System is not the same or intended to be anything like full self driving type of system that something like Tesla is aiming for. Porsche want the driver to drive still and these systems are to assist with bends coming up or change of speed limits so they assist the driver with those. I do not think the intention is ever or was ever that you engage the system, takes your hands off the wheel and the car takes care of the driving. That is a Tesla goal but I do not think Porsche owners really want to have a car they do not drive themselves. Just my opinion.

I had the same thought and made a similar comment. At the same time though doing the test this way creates a kind of tutorial of what the system can & can't do, the jargon, the practicalities etc. Like you I think the conclusion/scoring here is misplaced as this system doesn't set out to be on the path to automated driving. As a driver assistant it looks pretty good to me, it performed its intended functions pretty well. The gps data matching will improve in years to come (like for speed limit anomalies in this test) and maybe we'll start seeing more money spent on better maintained road lines and other driving aids built into the roads, not just the cars.

1:45 - Kyle, you say that there's an active air vent behind the charge-port door when the chart-port door opens manually (which I have seen and which is horrible -- see below); but are you saying that the entire "vent slot" is closed off for the powered charge-port door, or is it only partly closed off? The reason I'm asking is that I've seen this in the Taycan with the manual charge-port door, and it's a really dreadful design because dirt thrown up by the front wheels can go right through that slot onto the side of the car (including small stones that can chip the paint). I was shocked to see this design. So if I was ordering this car, I might be tempted to get the powered charge-port door just to close off that vented slit (if this entirely does so) -- though I've heard lots of horror stories about that powered door not opening when one wants it to (i.e., very buggy)...

One thing I'd like to see in this series are the different *levels* of ADAS on same/similar vehicles. For example, Tesla "basic Autopilot" versus "Full Self Driving"; Ford BlueCruise vs. base-level "Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control" (which is the "standard" cruise control on the Mach-E, and does do speed limit sign reading and adjusting.) It's funny, because there are some cases (like BlueCruise vs. IACC) that the *BASE* version might do better, because it can run on non-premapped highways. (Obviously, you use a section that *IS* mapped, but IACC would handle your trip to Hogback, for example, while BlueCruise wouldn't.)

Great review Kyle (and Alyssa). You have convinced me Porsche's system is not worth it. Tesla's and BMW's iDrive8 DAPP system are good. Ford's current system is not good enough, Jeep's current system is not good enough, VW's old system from ~2021 sucked. Tesla and BMW iDrive8 are the only ones that I have tried that are good. Tesla's autopliot is the best.

Kyle, I really think you should give points for torque input steering systems if the amount of torque is very light. I know that’s a subjective thing but as you comment about Tesla requiring a fairly significant amount of torque versus the Taycan which requires extremely little that no one in the vehicle would be able to notice while driving. At least that is my finding with 28,000 miles. -Also I’m pretty sure there is a setting to change the offset from speed limit, it only allows up to 5 mph- which is let’s say not acceptable in California. 😎 I was mistaken, it allows for a warning when going above the speed limit and you can adjust that limit to be up to 5 miles above the speed limit but you were correct that there is no offset for the InnoDrive dynamic speed.

Except you _don’t_ have to do that. In no way are you required to apply a “significant amount of torque” to the Tesla to maintain autopilot. You can raise the volume, lower the volume, increase the following distance, decrease the following distance, raise autopilot speed, lower autopilot speed, etc. any of these things reset the autopilot timer. Idk why he and people here keep harping on the “significant torque” comment when you can do half a dozen things in a tesla to reset the timer without ever having to apply any torque to the wheel. In a tesla you can apply exactly 0 torque and still notify the system you’re there

Never once have to touch or “apply torque” of any sort to the steering wheel for autopilot or disengagement. I swear the people saying these things have never even driven the cars. Most people also don't know you can hold down a certain part of the objectively dogshit yoke/wheel to honk the horn instead of touching the dogshit button, there's plenty of stuff. Point is it should be easy to just grab the wheel and direct it, which is what peeps do. The fact that openpilot beats Tesla autopilot on highways and costs $2k and can be added to many amazing EV's and cheap ice cars is impressive, and it can be modified and customized, and improves fast with the small amount of people feeding swarm data into it which will only continue to increase.

My Mercedes AMG is far better. Reads signs to adjust speed (works flawlessly), changes lanes for you with use of blinker, does adaptive cruise, lane assist .

Very good discussions and interesting. But I personally think you should not buy the Porsche for the automated driving or driving assistance. I think there are plenty of other better cars suited for that. Porsche is more for hands on driving, an alternative for petrol heads.

Kyle, InnoDrive is useful even without having it adjust to speed limit signs. I did disable that feature as well due to not having a Delta above the speed limit as well as some speed limits that just don’t make a lot of sense. You know drive still does detection of the corner based on its high resolution maps and will reduce the vehicle speed to safely take the corner. I have used it on twisty roads that I am not familiar with and can set the limit quite high and the car will just bring it down to make a corners. In that case of course I do not rely on its active lane centering.

Any thoughts about VW starting to utilize swarm data from MEB software 3.0, which is being rolled out this summer? They say that even older cars with We Connect, like a 2016 Passat or e-Golf with lane assist, will provide data. Will Audi, Skoda and Porsche get access to the same data? Will it work well? Tesla say they do it, but Autopilot still fails in the same spots after a thousand Teslas have driven there. 🙄

I like how this test demonstrates the abilities & limits of the system. However I think it's a little unfair in how you rank it - the score should reflect how well the system performs its claimed/intended function. So this Porsche system is only a pure "driver assistant" and is not claiming to be a halfway house to automated driving (as far as I understood it)... Apart from the Innodrive speed adjustments I guess - that should work by itself and it made one or two mistakes. Personally, as an old luddite, my only scoring would be in how an Adas system contributed to safety (like braking for the slower car in front, the rumble-strip audible alert etc). I would drive with at least one hand on the wheel almost all of the time, just like I do now in my "old fashioned" car. Btw, the "railroad" guage in the cluster did change colour: one or both lines changed from green to grey when the system could not detect one or both of the lines on the road, or a line was absent like when passing an exit. But it was a bit subtle. Anyway, great EV car and a fun video with the two of you bouncing ideas around. I think the greatest value of this test is that in the process you explain & discuss what the Adas is trying to do, the limitations, the jargon etc. A lot of this new tech is a bit of an overload for those of us looking at EVs (or just about any new car) without the benefit of any or much experience.

My guess there is that Tesla is just confirming there's a valid payment type on the account and proceeds charging immediately. Then does the billing afterwards. Benefits of vertical integration I suppose. Versus having the charger request payment info from vehicle, processing payment and validation, then initiate charge sequence.

@@andrewt9204 Yup - from what I can tell, Tesla just get the Tesla Account Number from the vehicle, and bill the charge to that account... the actual payment is handled separately, using the card assigned to that account... so Tesla aren't actually doing 'live billing' when you charge, unlike the CCS system (which therefor is dependent on any delays in the payment system, in addition to delays in handshake between car and charger)
