It's amazing how big a difference a title can make. If I'd gone into the theater expecting to see something called "How Do You Live?", I think I would've reacted very differently. At least, I think I would've been more prepared for the story's spiritual and philosophical leanings, which felt much more prominent here compared to Miyazaki's earlier films. But then again, maybe I would've been frustrated that a movie asking such a lofty question doesn't really have a strong takeaway at the end. For the record, I do think it's best that Miyazaki doesn't preach to us about how we should live. He's never been preachy before and I wouldn't expect him to start now. It was still interesting to watch him grapple with the question, and to grapple with it alongside him.

I have another reviewer friend who thinks titles are one of the most important elements of a film and I am always a little worried by that prospect because I’m not always the best at picking titles, I think there is something to it though because if you are able to pick a good title then you probably truly understand what your work is trying to communicate.

I do hope its last film, it saddens me to say as a long term ghibli fan that he has only sullied his reputation with this "thing" it was attrocious

Respectfully disagree

Totally agree It wasn’t good, unfortunately. Movies don’t have to make sense to be a good work of art. Unfortunately, it was an ankle deep soup of unconnected ideas. People are seeing quality where there simply isn’t any. Good was a very pretty waste of time.

It’s isn’t very good. I love studio Ghibli, I’ve see almost all of their films. This is a barely coherent soup of ideas. Not good. Not bad, but not good. Disappointing. People who say they like this movie are hiding behind artsy subjectivism. His other great films didn’t need that excuse. They were hits. This one isn’t that.

As an arty subjectivist I respectfully disagree 😉
