It's easy to understand how the music hall was the highlight of a working persons week. A brief escape from the horror of daily life. As was the norm of the time women's morality was of course I question if they dared to enjoy themselves. I love this channel. Thank you for posting.

Also my Great Great Great Aunt was Lottie Collins a famous music performer in London and New York. She had a daughter Jose Collins (related to Joan Collins) who followed in her footsteps and found her way into early movies in New York

The music hall continued into the 20th century, which is fortunate since it overlaps with the early years of the recording industry. Many of the performers made records, so their music can still be heard nowadays. Many years ago, I found a 4-CD box set of music hall recordings. The earliest ones in that set date to 1901, and some are as late as the 1930s. It is interesting to hear these examples of a tradition that has mostly died out.

Well I have news for you. The oldest music hall in Europe still open. Mainly for theatre and concerts. It's name is Wilton and is located in Wapping in East London

What would be the first words of a Victorian critic were he to step into today's equivalent? "HOW much for a pint of ale?"

@alexandraday3685 - That sounds like your grandfather had many stories about when he was a comedian, singer and dancer. Today, he would be considered as a “triple threat,” so to speak. Can you possibly share any of his stories with us? Thank you.

Folksingers John Roberts and Tony Barrand did an album of Music Hall songs back in the 79's, I'm not sure it is still available but it was a great album and my first introduction to Music Hall. Some of the song were pretty "suggestive"!

The telephone diminished the need to meet people face to face. Radio took a bite out of going out for entertainment. The Internet pretty much killed it. AI in the future will eliminate socializing.
