This video is a hot take, and kind of uninformed for a fighter. There were no cameras available at the time that weren't cumbersome and expensive ( super 8, etc.), so footage of anyone would be hard to come by, and by all accounts he sparred all of the top karate guys, and Mike Stone even said no one baffled him like Bruce Lee. Also, Bruce went around to dojos in America and fought teachers( mainly for knowledge exchange) and was being challenged A BUNCH on the street in the early 70's before he died. He did take on some of these guys, and won. Bruce's trajectory as a fighter was one of steady improvement; he improved his physique ( he got skinnier and more muscular throughout his life), he improved his ground game and kicks( from Gene LaBelle and Jhoon Rhee), and he was working out with equipment specifically tailor made to take extreme punishment. Bruce was even training his fingers to strike through oak, and there were pieces of oak found in his home with holes in them after he died. Bruce was also kind of crazy; he wore a device that gave small electric shocks to his body, and drank cow's blood and meat shakes( but ended up giving it up after awhile). He trained daily, and was known to have a bad temper. Trying to compare him to fighters today is disingenuous; he died 48 years ago, and the ideas he put forth are on display in 2021, proving he was right. He's probably the only guy from that time that, if placed in a time machine and plunked down in THIS time, would have no problem adapting, although the mma people are a little dogmatic about how effective mma is, it's still held back by rules and refs, etc. Is Bruce a superhero? No. Bruce HIMSELF said that the only man he feared was a bigger and stronger version of himself. He knew he had to train twice as hard to even have a chance when fighting a bigger guy. Bruce worshipped Muhammad Ali, and studied his footage to incorporate his boxing movements ( displayed in Return of the Dragon). This Bruce Lee hate on you tube has to stop.

I'm ok with Bruce Lee losing in a movie scene, but the way it happened bugged me. Both Brad Pitt and "Bruce Lee" looked terrible in that fight scene. Bruce's movements in "Once Upon" did not resemble Bruce Lee's actual style at all, either from his movies or sparring footage. "Once Upon" was a high budget film and Tarantino is a big name director, there should have been better fight choreography.

My real issue is really his depiction of Bruce's arrogance. He misquoted Lee saying he would kill Ali. @@vasquez0656 there are only 2 fights Bruce Lee did with evidence and corroborating witnesses. (1) A single schoolboy boxing match, 17 year old Bruce vs Garry Elms, there are about 4 photographs of the event and a newspaper clipping. After two 2 minute rounds, Bruce won via judges decision. The photos show both boys throwing wild haymakers. (2) The fight with Wong Jack Man. The details vary wildly, but there were enough corroborating witnesses to confirm that it happened, and it was a less than spectacular event where nobody was happy about the outcome. According to Bruce Lee’s own writing, he knew very little about Muay Thai, in spite of spending several months in Thailand to film a movie. He casually dismissed the sport of Thai boxing and said he wasn’t interested. There are tons of fanboy speculative narratives based on third hand accounts about Bruce Lee kicking the butts of champion fighters, and there is zero actual evidence.

@k c I think BL is just the perfect display for the very different perspectives on fighting. So he again and again ignites and triggers this discussion. One perspective roughly says: Martial arts are deadly and far superior to every fight sport. They cannot be fully practiced without severe injury, hence practitioners do not fight. An extreme and often repeated view of some is: Lee would beat any champion in a no rules fight within 5 seconds. The other party are some fight sports practitioners. They regularly spar and fight with quite a set of rules to prevent regular injury. They say: You cannot become a good fighter without lots of fighting practice. Practicing extreme speed and brutal techniques in the air do not prepare you for an opponent that fights back. Most footage of fights between the parties sees the fight sports guy win, e.g. Muay Thai against KungFu. But of course these fights are fought under lots of rules. We cannot know. We cannot prove any point without risking a row of deaths. So this argument comes up again and again. A nice practice for all of us in civilized discussion and "honoring the opponent" in a fight of words. I myself know a guy who had a black Belt in zero contact karate. I am easy to hit. We sparred and he could not hit me - because of 12 years of training to stop your punch. He later trained many years in vale tudo to un-train this habit.

I don't know why it's trendy to hate on Bruce lately. Bruce's one inch punch demo was NOT a demonstration of how strong and powerful he was and it was NOT a self defense technique. It was a demonstration of how you can generate power by putting your body into the punch instead of just winding up and swinging for the fences. Bruce doesn't deserve respect because he's the best fighter in history. He deserves respect because he was nearly 4 decades ahead of his time. He was preaching and teaching MMA 30+ years before the UFC was ever dreamed of. He studied boxing, wrestling, fencing. Nobody was doing what Bruce was teaching.

I grew up in the 70s, listening to rock and roll, kung fu movies, and yes, of course, Bruce Lee's movies. He was inspirational, and I became a fan. But at the same time, I was also exposed to boxing and Muay Thai, long before most people know what Muay Thai is (for the record, I grew up in South East Asia). Watching both boxing and Muay Thai up close, I was aware of what is real and stunts in movies. Even though we are kids back then, we knew the power of boxing (I followed Muhammad Ali's career, and watched his fights via live TV - Zaire, Manila, Kuala Lumpur) and Muay Thai (there used to be open martial arts tournaments in Penang, Malaysia, many styles came to compete against each other - karate, TKD, Kung Fu, Muay Thai and unsurprisingly, Muay Thai won every one of those tournaments) To me, Bruce Lee is a great teacher and movie maker, he broke many grounds, in terms of overcoming barriers, fitness conditioning, integrating different styles of fighting, training based on your physical attributes, etc. That was his path and contribution. He is not a pro fighter unlike Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, Benny the Jet, or Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and their contemporaries in boxing. In the end, we should honor Bruce for his actual contribution (there are plenty) not for what he is not. He wouldn't expect anything less.

I was in the martial arts when Bruce Lee was still alive. Because of my involvement with Tracy's Karate and their hired gun Joe Lewis who gave seminars to Tracy's instructors, l learned several of Lee's techniques. His use of weapon first attacks is very effective. As for his videos, I agree with you that a lot is staged. However, Lee was genetically gifted with awesome speed and explosive power. That along with his work ethic would be the makings of a very good fighter. When Lee was young, he got into plenty of fights. When he was older, with his primary desire to be an action movie star, he did not want to fight and take facial damage. Have you seen videos of Jim Harrison and Fred Wren fighting tournaments in those days? Lastly, Gabriel, THAT WAS NOT JOE LEWIS punching that man. I can prove it to you. Notice the RED collar of the man who is punching. That is a Tang Soo Do uniform, like the man in the red trimmed gi wore when Lee one inch punched him. Lewis was a black belt in Shorin-ryu and never wore a red trimmed gi. Those were students of Chuck Norris who was a Tang Soo Do practitioner in those days. I'm not blaming you for saying it was Joe Lewis. I know the site where you saw that and for some reason foreign to me, that person exaggerates a lot. I would say lie, but I'm hoping he just doesn't know better.

Maybe an old issue of Black Belt magazine...) that Bruce Lee was NOT genetically gifted (poor eyesight, hence the glasses; short; limited muscle mass; one leg shorter than the other; etc). But yes, of course, his work ethic was superhuman. Good eye on that Tang Soo Do uniform.

For me, the strongest evidence that Bruce Lee was a good fighter is the testimonials from multiple respected, legitimate martial artists of the time, e.g. Chuck Norris and Gene LeBell. Aside from not wanting to speak ill of the dead, I don't see much reason why these people would speak so highly of Bruce. Even then, they could have just said he was a decent fighter, but Gene LeBell calls him a "world-class martial artist". Besides that, I agree that there is pretty much zero evidence that Bruce would've been a championship-level fighter. I say this as a Bruce Lee fan - I take inspiration from his philosophies, work ethic, and pioneering methods, but I'm under no illusion that he was some god of fighting. As for the Tarantino issue, I found the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood scene entertaining. It's set in a fantasy world where the Manson murders didn't happen. In that fantasy world, Bruce Lee was an arrogant fool. Fine by me, it has no bearing on reality. And I certainly don't give a hoot that Tarantino sincerely thinks real-life Bruce was an ass. I get why Bruce's daughter was upset, but as someone with no personal connection, I can afford to take a more detached view.

It's critically important when discussing historical figures to reference the era in which they lived. Bruce Lee died in 1973. It's pointless to ask if he would be a UFC champion almost 50 years after he died in a sport that wasn't invented until 20 years after he died and has had almost 30 years to refine itself. Quite frankly, find ANYONE from pre-1973 that could compete in UFC now. Joe Lewis, who WAS a champion in the 1960s and 70s, would have been destroyed by any middleweight or above in the UFC now. As an aside, Joe fought the very first full contact karate match in 1970 while he was a student of Bruce Lee's and he used JKD to knock out Greg Banes who tried fighting using traditional karate. It was very reminiscent of UFC 1 in that respect. -On Mike Tyson. I have a better answer: in 1973 (before July 20 obviously), Bruce would have demolished Mike Tyson because Mike was 7 years old. Today, Mike would demolish him because he's dead. Bruce walked around at 135 pounds for most of his adult life. He was actually walking around at 125 pounds during the filming of Enter the Dragon. He was a very small guy. Mike Tyson walks around at 220+. It's ludicrous to compare them in any kind of combat sporting event. -So Kato does a kung-fu demonstration one afternoon in 1967 and 54 years later we dissect the existent film and argue if he was any good or not based on it. We look at tricks that were used to wow the audience who was there to see Kato from the Green Hornet and, using slow motion, critically dissect his motions and criticize them for not standing up to expectations (or if you're of the "he was only an actor" camp, meeting your expectations). I think you guys have too much time on your hands. There are two basic camps: the "he was just an actor" camp and the "he was a demi-god" camp. Both are stupid. He was a dedicated martial artist who went against the norms of his time to advance martial arts. He spiritually embodied the mindset of martial artists 50 years after he died. The way he approached martial arts is commonplace nowadays. It wasn't then and we could argue that it is now largely because of him. We don't know how he would have faired in competition because he chose to use film to convey his art and because there really wasn't any meaningful competition at the time. So instead of pissing on his legacy, I'd like to see his contributions be put into the context of the time in which they were created.

It's like people think they had cell phones with cameras in the 60's; super 8 cameras and the film were expensive, and also a pretty new technology at the time, and THAT'S why you don't have a lot of footage on Lee( although he did film some of his home practices). There are a bunch of pictures of Bruce from that era, though.

Agree with everything you said but he has some quotes that give me shivers every time. “A good martial artist does not become tense, but ready. Not thinking, yet not dreaming. Lots to like in this video. I think Bruce Lee had an amazing amount of fast-twitch muscle fiber, he was fanatical about his personal fitness, and I think he should get credit for thinking outside the style box and using empirical testing to figure out what worked. However fighting has evolved a LONG way from his era and no way would he be able to fight in the UFC if you just plonked him down in 2021.

I really like the video, but honestly I think a more in depth study of Bruce Lee was necessary here. Obviously he was a showman, not a fighter, but he was also definitely a martial artist, or at least a very interesting philosopher who tried to use physics and his own experience to create a martial art style that wasn't necessary bound by rules but by facts. Back in the day it wasn't easy... You had to reach out to champions and they weren't as good as the champions we had in the 80's and 90's. Obviously boxers at the time were the peak of fighting. At least since Muay Thai wasn't popular. Boxing was competitive and it was the real deal. Now, I don't know about Bruce Lee calling off Muhammad Ali... He said he really liked Ali's style and implemented some of his techniques to his own arsenal. He definitely respected Ali. I don't think Bruce Lee vs Tyson is even a conversation; it should not be. What we *should* be asking *instead* is: if Bruce Lee was born today, would he have become a UFC champion or a great MMA fighter? And to that my response is: I think it's pretty reasonable. Bruce Lee had the necessary ideas, the necessary drive, the necessary mindset, the necessary motivation, a critical mind... And even a character! He would have had everything a champion would need... But why can't we assess whether Bruce Lee was a dangerous fighter or not? *Because he didn't fight.* And that's AAAALLL the reasons you need to say confidently that he wasn't a great fighter. So again, did he have the potential? No doubt. I think today he would have gotten somewhere at least.

I think anyone with a lifelong dedication to martial arts & physical fitness as well as a critical/creative mind would be an excellent candidate for being a high level fighter in whatever discipline they chose. I've read that Bruce Lee was practically obsessed with martial arts and spent the vast majority of his time training and studying martial arts. I don't see why someone that dedicated couldn't do extremely well. Additionally, he was also highly charismatic and had great interpersonal skills. He'd probably use that to his advantage and have a huge following on social media that would produce a steady income allowing him to travel and learn/train from the best martial artists/fighters. I would vote yes.

Bruce Lee should always be mentioned when it comes to martial arts 🙏🏼 I agree with your video there isn't a video of him going against actual fighters which we would all want but I would highly know that he would adapt to the fighting style or come up with strategies after a win or a lost. He would analyze the fight like a fighter would do but I also know through that he would become a better fighter from that experience. That's Facts. I'm a huge fan of Bruce Lee (Still my idol till this day) But what you are explaining in the video are good points which why it sucks to not have Bruce fight an actual fighters. Great video no offense taken you're also putting out facts. Nothing would take away the appreciation and Respect I have for Bruce Lee. Joe Louis and Chuck Norris, both world champion martial artist have mentioned he would have done well in a fight. Completely understand separating myth from reality. the video with him sparring for example the other guy looked like an amateur didn’t set up anything and it seems that other comments have pointed out that he was a student of Bruce lee. Respect your stance and this video, while I can appreciate the myth portion of it because it made martial arts popular around the world. I can also look at reality and ask those questions. Can Bruce Lee take a punch? How would an actual fight look like with a high level? Those questions we do not know the answer to. Would he win? Maybe. Could he lose also very possible. Thanks for this gutsy video!I also would like to say that Bruce Lee never claimed that his one inch punch would KO someone, many champion boxers have accredited this technique to allow them to create space or throw a punch from short range, check out Andre Ward punch vs Sullivan Barrera, it was a great counter where he parries a jab and lands a beautiful one in punch counter. In the video you can clearly see it did not hurt Sullivan Barrera, but it lands, keeps them guessing and looks good. Again, Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali were in talks to do an exhibition for the spectacle. Bruce Lee would not stand a chance against Tyson or Muhammad ali.

I do respect your opinion on this as I do with everyone else too. I do think that one thing people need to realize though is that a lot of this footage was from 1964. And I believe some of it was from a tournament that Ed Parker had and Bruce Lee was only 24 years old and he did not transition into Jeet Kune Do just yet. Also Joe Louis came to train with Bruce Lee I think few years after this. And I think the second footage of the one-inch punch was actually Joe Lewis holding the pad and getting hit by it because if I recall he didn't believe the power either and he had to feell it for himself. I also believe if Bruce Lee didn't do what he did in the martial arts, we wouldn't quite be where it is today. I do think that he paved the way and open the doors for a lot more things in the martial arts.

Honestly pre muay thai kickboxing in the USA is basically Lee's legacy if you think about it. Because it was Lee's relationship with point karate guys back then that encouraged people like Joe Lewis to push forward full contact competition. Calling Lee the grandfather of mma like some people do is a step too far though imo. Because Vale Tudo and the Gracies push to market their bjj to the USA by fighting other styles would have still happened even if Bruce Lee never existed.

Are you a professional painter??!!!"...I said: "Thank you but no, I just love painting and I took some seminars". Guys, the point here is..."A Discipline/Craft doesn't have to be your source of income for you to become proficient at it." And Bruce Lee didn't have to fight for money because he was making way more money as an actor, teaching and writing books. He was not just a Martial Artist, he was also an intellectual. Look at Keanu Reeves...is he a professional hitman in real life? Was he in the military? The answer is NO, but BOY! He can shoot in real life! There is footage that can prove it BUT there will be always some hater who will find any detail in the footage to discredit Keanu's shooting skills. Why hating on Bruce Lee's Legacy and bilittle him has become a trend among "Leftist Millennials" lately? Maybe because after almost 50 years of his death people around the world still talk about him? and nobody will talk about us after a month when we die? I think the point of the one inch punch is to show how much power he can generate. Like, a massive bench press doesn't one-to-one translate into punching power, but it does tell you that they have the potential to generate lots of power. There was this Kung Fu guy on hard2hurt who showed Mike some of that. As for his form, I just think the "meta" wasn't as developed back then, so the things he was doing were slightly off. You see this in most every pre-modern, pre-competitive martial art where everyone doesn't have access to all the fights all the time, and given the chance to compete today I think he would probably completely reinvent himself were he to fight professionally given how much he stresses adaptability and continuous personal growth.

Because Your Pro record is Everything and people are not going to come out and see a fighter with Zero pro fights. So they build up their record first. And my family member told me I was wrong because that would mean Boxing is fake. I WAS SHocked (especially since I am Boxer) that some people & even my Own family can't understand the truth. ...The fights are not fake, they are mismatched on purpose as a strategy for selected 'star' fighters to get a career boost of sorts. His athleticism was why he was able to wreck through the heayweight division with such limited experience. Brock Lesnar is twice his weight, and has 7 inches on Bruce Lee. He would be demolished if Lesnar shot for a double leg takedown.

@@FoxInTheBasement i know right ? Alot people keep praising Bruce is fast with his groin kick finger jab this and that but they never think about the other guy's physique, let alone an athelete like Lesnar.

great analysis. as a bruce lee fan boy myself, i find it only prudent to realize that he was every bit a human. sometimes it is absurd how people put him up on a pedestal. there are even anecdotes of lee being hit by his students during training. but here's the thing- he is the reason why many in fact took up martial arts and stuff. his speed, although not an actual fight, was visible in his no-vfx movies. there were many artists back then, and people wouldn't just pick a random guy to be made into an icon. he was human, yet special. a legend and an idol for many. period. speaking of modern world- no he wouldn't be anywhere close to being invincible, but would definitely be a fighter none the less.

If he was in our time, and he would have learned modern martial arts, and if he kept his passion for it. Yes there is a chance. If you have a time machine and you go back to take Bruce, and bring him into a fight for the belt, high chance he would get knocked the fuck out, and no doubt he will be pushed against the cage and he would get his ass kick, if the opponents chooses to take him down, Bruce will go down!

AFAIK he him self said he wouldn't be able to defeat or fight with Ali. IIRC he said something like "this is a small Chinese hand". Nowadays people would wipe floor with him in UFC etc, and that's quite normal considering he lacked that kind of experience. Sport also wasn't really his focus (He was thinking about fighting more from perspective of one fighting for survival. In jeet kune do primary targets are 'balls' and eyeballs. His jeet kune do books (materials his wife published) explain basic techniques quite well (there are few weird exercises and principles from wing chun, but very little IIRC. Otherwise theory of punching, kicking, moving, and some grappling is relatively well covered.) and his practical way of thinking and 'style without style' fighting philosophy has been light years ahead of anyone back then.

In Bruce's defense, I can relate being a point specialist style practioner from eons past who ended up with a bunch of haters by outsparring them in a few rounds but admittedly I was super tired and I landed mostly only jabs and even I don't know what my right hand could have done but it's annoying when you're respectful with control and you get your kicks grabbed and tripped when you know they probably would have gotten floored... of course I am a lower tier than Mr. Varga but so were my pro opponents

So when you watch a fight video of your next opponent, are you watching their opponent as much as the guy your fighting? Is that a way you gauge your opponents weaknesses based on the calibre of the guy he is fighting?

THANK YOU! For making the distinction between a martial artist and a fighter. This is what people don’t understand. Bruce Lee was an actor and a fantastic martial artist who revolutionized fight choreography. Without Bruce Lee some of the best fight scenes in movies wouldn’t exist. Can he win in a real fight? Who cares? There was no MMA back then. By the time Bruce was 32, he was practicing western boxing, judo, karate, kung fu, and weight lifting. He was just a well rounded human being who pursued self perfection. That was his idea behind JKD. Not a martial art but the process of being a martial artist. The importance of JKD was that it was not a fixed system that doesn’t change but a continuously developing process of human development. This was his viewpoint. You can the book “Bruce Lee: an artist of life”. Which details his personal notes on training, philosophies, and even his poetry. So yes Bruce Lee was a great martial artist. He seeked our effective fighting styles and worked with people like Chuck Norris and Gene Labell for coaching. After his death, his main student Dan Insanto profited off of JKD and JKD ironically became the way of karate and kung fu.

Oh and the stupid Mike Tyson vs Bruce Lee argument. Muhammad Ali was the big boxer of the time and Bruce Lee respected him and emulated his style. Bruce was a big fan of Muhammad Ali. Did he think he could beat him? Probably not lol Bruce weighed 135 pounds!

Would have been interesting to see Bruce lee fight one of those elite Muay Thai fighters that fought westerners like Rick Roufus or someone like Ramon Dekkers 😅 I wouldn’t have thought he would have had that experience at that level that the Thais have of sparing for fights and fighting 3 to 4 times a week from 7 years of age and having up to 300-500 fights They were all killers in the ring fighting to provide food for their families unlike the guy Bruce Lee was sparing Great martial artist but you can’t compare an elite fighter that has had over 300 fights like saenchai or Nong o and that’s just striking skills, not mma etc Great video thank you 🙏

Excellent breakdown. I don't believe Bruce Lee would compete in sports combat for the same reason he didn't compete in the time he lived, he wanted to be an actor. According to his own writings, interviews, and accounts from others, he was more concerned about MA application in street combat and deconstruction of the old style of fighting. But, he just really loved the arts side of it and wanted to show that through film. So, I don't know if he was a great fighter, but he was a great Martial Artist who has had an immeasurable impact on Martial Arts, film, and culture. It is even to the point that we have debates about something he never claimed to be.

All these fighters I pointed out do not have a financial interest in perpetuating myths because they have their own successful and verified careers and contributions to Martial Arts.

Can you do this kind of video about Chuck Norris. Also Bruce Lee's training could be copied by a UFC fighter for a year to see how well it holds up against todays views on training and that would be the closest we can come to really knowing if he was able to really fight in MMA.

You have to acknowledge first that we live in different times. Bruce Lee was exploring with ideas and figh philosophies at his time. He paved the way to MMA by destroying precisely those different limits in styles of fighting. He did not want to compete in the same rules with a karate guy becouse he was interested in other staff, breaking exactly what makes those rules. But, the art form of fighting now is at another level. Bruce Lee is not capable of beating a champion of today.
