Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Watching this video certainly was educating, while I would never and can't enter in any of these tourneys it is good to know how far my absolute favourite Pokemon could potentially go. Knowing the kind of competition and my preferred load out for Lucario I no doubt wouldn't get very far. I don't have access for specific training or any real knowledge about the specifics like EVs, IVs, etc. (My team is solely built through regular gameplay without any fancy ways of raising Pokemon) so naturally I wouldn't last long. When I get a Riolu, I would have it hold a Macho brace to help increase all stats better (and if at all possible have Pokerus) train it up and evolve into Lucario and train to max level and give it a Lucarionite. I would also make sure it's ability is inner focus and have it learn a ground type move (either earthquake, dig or bone rush), aura sphere (good damage and never miss), dark pulse (for dealing with ghost and psychic types, also good damage high accuracy with chance to make target flinch), and dragon pulse (for dealing with dragon types, good damage and high accuracy). Imo I think it's a good all around set for dealing with almost all types. I prefer to avoid close combat for while it has high damage and accuracy I don't want to make my Lucario more of a glass cannon than it already is, focus blast also seems good but I prefer a move with an accuracy of 90 or higher and have higher pp. Bullet punch and extreme speed feel like a waste to me and stat boosting moves also feel wasted to me but that's my opinion. I would love to hear some constructive criticism about my Lucario from an expert; hear what is good and what isn't, and what I could do to make an excellent Lucario. Ever since gen IV, I always had a Lucario on my team with this set (except in gen IV and V where I gave it an expert belt).

Lucario is tied with garchomp and dugtrio for my favorite Pokémon. Lucario may not be ou now, but it’s very good in its current tier, UU. In fact, in gen 7 it moved from RUBL back to UU, and it hasn’t dropped since in gen 7 and gen 8.

How though? He's Cynthia's arguably second best pokemon who some people would also argue is the best champion, had his own movie, and has been in every Smash Bros since brawl. (I'm going to keep just calling Lucario male since female Lucario are rare and all of its popular appearances are male) Granted Smash Bros is obviously the biggest indicator of his popularity and I understand not everyone plays that but theres a ton of other examples. You could play as his pre evolution in the Mystery Dungeon games which mainly only let's you choose starters, and has been the partner pokemon of plenty of significant trainers in the anime including Maylene the Fighting type gym leader of Sinnoh, Cameron a goofy ass trainer that kicked Ashes ass in the Unova league, Korrina the fighting type gym leader of Kalos that was also used to give more of an explanation on how Mega Evolution works. Professor Kukui in the Sun and Moon Anime also had a Lucario though it wasn't his partner pokemon Incineroar was (which I take no issue with since Incineroars my second favorite pokemon only losing to Lucario) Finally Ash hatched a Riolu from an egg in the latest series of the anime and will evolve into Lucario when the next dubbed season comes out March 5th on Netflix. So I guess if you don't play Smash, haven't watched much of the anime, and haven't gotten into competitive pokemon I could understand how you weren't aware of Lucarios popularity, but yeah while it's no Pikachu or Charizard, Lucario is a pretty recognizable 4th gen pokemon to any fan.

@@RR71311 Lucario really is cool and I love the concept of aura and how humans can have the ability to see and harness it. If Ash had any understanding of how his aura abilities worked he'd probably be able to build an even stronger bond with his Lucario. The only negative I can think to say of Lucario is that his shiny form, at least imo, looks godawful. If he were all golden yellow then I'd probably like it a bit more but they combined golden yellow with his original blue fur and it just looks really terrible. But I wouldn't pass up the opportunity of using one just for the fact that it's a Lucario. I've used it and Garchomp since Black and White 2 (I didn't get to experience the gen 4 games until after ORAS came out.

Well that wouldn't really make sense if it's stab signature move was a special attack, but it's Mega does have more Physical power than Special.

Lucario has always had 115 SpA and 110 Atk, and since signature moves almost always take the higher damaging stat into account, i.e. Lucario's Aura sphere being special. It's Mega, however, actually does have a higher base attack (Atk 145 SpA 140), which is why you may have believed so.

It’s not so much a power creep problem, but more so a “speed creep”. If lucario had 2 more points in speed it would have been a whole lot better and probably overused, and if it could outspeed garchomp it would be a straight up menace. But as things stand, it is neither strong enough to use choice scarf, nor fast enough to use choice band/specs

my favorite set in gen 5 was life orb sd plus ice punch, extremespeed and crunch, you didnt need close combat because they would switch into either jelly or gliscor anyway. by the time they figured out your set they would already have lost half their team and you wouldve already won.
