I guess by now you have all heard the sad news about Hardcore wrestling Icon New Jack passing away at age 58. It feels like every year there’s less and less wrestlers left who have a story worth telling. And that’s why today for ring of the hawk we will look at new Jack and the gangstas in smoky mountain wrestling. New Jack almost died but not because he was diving from things more because the crowd hated him!

Yep, the LA Riots. It was the biggest news event of the early 90s aside from the Gulf War and the OJ Simpson Bronco chase. It was like we went back to the 1960s for a couple days. You turned on the TV and it was looting, riots, police brutality and white people getting beat up in black neighborhoods all over the news. That trucker who got pulled out of his rig at an intersection in South Central and almost beat to death on live TV was shocking.

Right? Crazy that quite a few (more than just Jim Cornette) has mentioned McMahon lacking motivation for tag teams. Few tag teams mentioning disappointment business wise at times like The Brainbusters and Rockers for example prior to their split and Shawn's big singles push. Not to say he disliked the individuals personally I can def in hindsight even at the time the Attitude Era continued despite how exiting the tag matches were I could tell the tag teams had less significance in Vince's opinion. The fact that tag teams were getting over for so long in the south it seems as if the tag team division Vince McMahon may not have favored but had no choice but to put some sort of focus or relativity towards it. Late 80s early 90s especially. So many different concepts to try. I believe as much as McMahon had his top tag team(s) he was more focal on that one jacked hero to be the face of his company. Is what it is but tag teams def brought a different dynamic that made wrestling more interesting and made room and opened doors for many many innovative ideas. Gave more wrestlers tv time and what have you. Cartoon shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, GI Joe transformers etc heavily pushed the idea of not just leadership but teamwork the rock n roll era. Had teams like L.O.D., Rock'n Roll Express, Freebirds, Von Eric's, Midnight Express, Demolition, etc to thank. L.O.D. the number one tag team for me that took tag team wrestling to another level and kept it so relevant. Them and The Steiner Brothers

New Jack was definitely an interesting figure in wrestling. I don’t believe for a second he was “playing a character” it all felt way too authentic. He did some...let’s say less than tasteful things in wrestling, but he was an absolute spectacle because no one knew what to expect. He was one of the best examples of “hide the negatives, accentuate the positives”, because what he lacked in the pure wrestling department he made up for in everything else. And the heat he got in Smoky Mountain was nuclear, which I have to laugh at the lack of self awareness from the audience waving a confederate flag in the face of black men. Regardless, New Jack is a legend in wrestling, for both good and bad reasons, but no one can deny how entertaining he was regardless of how you felt about his antics. Plus his tag team with Shark Boy is one of the funniest runs of anyone I’ve seen in wrestling. RIP New Jack.

Back in the late 90's when ECW started coming down to Florida, Fonzy was a family friend, so we would get the chance to go to all the shows early. One of the coolest things I ever saw was Tracy Smothers (then doing the FBI gimmick) going through training/moves with several of the younger wrestlers in the company. Back in the old territory days they often repeated matches with small changes because a lot of televised events didn't run on national cable. Mostly local "territory " channels. So they could get away with stuff like that. Running the same match but in a new area I mean. So I understand why watching taped events back to back would seem repetitive. This has been politically incorrect and I do the J. O. B. For No Bo Dy! Stay on the top of the card hawk! And always remember the most powerful magic words in wrestling... "creative control."

Maybe just worded poorly, but I couldn't really claim that matches were repeated "because" they were not being broadcast. It helped a ton, but that wasn't the main thing. A bigger reason they did it was to let local fans think they saw something special or unique, even though every show may have those same "unique" matches. For example, would people think that the Skywalker match at Starrcade '86 was so amazing if they knew that the Road Warriors and the Midnight Express would do it 4 more times in the next month. Or that, between Nov. 13 1984 and Dec 16 1984, the Midnight Express and the Rock And Roll Express had 15 scaffold matches? 1988 was the Great American Bash tour, where the Road Warriors would end up doing 17 scaffold matches against Ivan Koloff and the Russian Assassin. Sure takes the shine off of it when you are told how many times the match had happened in a short amount of time. Another reason they would repeat matches was so that two people starting a feud could get some "practice" in before doing it on the big stage.

I personally enjoyed the SMW run of the Gangstas more than their ECW stuff. Don't get me wrong, the deathmatch stuff was incredible for both men, but everyone was on their level in ECW .The SMW Gangstas just stood out among even Jericho, Tony Anthony, Candido, and the legends just off their ability to get heat without even wrestling sometimes. Racist crowds aside, The Gangstas had something special and Jim Cornette made the right decision imo.
