How GOOD was Pep Guardiola as a Player, Really?

There's probably only a small handful of elite football players that have gone on to become elite coaches after retiring from the game.
And this makes complete sense. After all, teaching in itself is quite is quite a difficult task. Simply being good at the thing you're trying to teach isn't anyways enough to make you good at imparting your knowledge onto others.
Having said all of this, one person, in particular, who managed to master both aspects of the game is none other than Johan Cruyff. And while he was absolutely phenomenal at what he did and his contribution to football as a whole cannot be understated, he’s not the subject of this video.
Instead, today, we will be focusing on the playing career of probably his most successful student, Pep Guardiola.
In his short managerial career, he's conquered almost all of Europe. However, it’s his playing career that's piqued my interest lately.
So, with all of that being said, how good was Pep Guardiola, really?

I think what I admire most about Pep is his unwavering passion for the game. Even under immense pressure in the biggest of games he is a staunch believer that his philosophy is the only right one. I think he will go down as the greatest ever manager not only due to his success, but also his influence on the game.

Pep can change his tactics if he thinks they don’t work, but as far as flexibility goes, he’s a bit of a dictator - he never really lets his players move freely and wants them to always stay in the tactical role he picks out for them. Compare this to someone like Ancelotti, who is a lot more loose when it comes to players’ individual performances, and you’ll see what I mean.

I was looking for a video about Guardiola as a player and since it didn't bring up many results, I clicked on this expecting it to be the mandatory shitty compilation with abhorrent loud music. Boy was I wrong. This is extremely well redacted, well narrated, well paced, the footage is relevant and well edited and the music pick is great. Now, if you allow me to be a bit of a prick and drop a little criticism, I'd say you could improve on your voiceover/recording technique, mic setup or vocal production for a cleaner, clearer sound (however, I'm a music producer so I tend to pay a lot of attention to that kind of thing and maybe it's just me being fussy). He was a world class deep-lying playmaker; great technique, vision, and wonderful range of passing, both long and short, could create chances, or dictate play, and was so intelligent in his positioning, leadership, and reading of the game, which also helped him defensively even though he wasn't fast and he wasn't the strongest player either. He also didn't have a bad shot on him either even though he didn't score much. He was an even better coach, and maybe his ability has been overshadowed by the likes of all-time great Spanish midfielders like Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, etc., possibly even Alonso and Fabregas, especially as they achieved more with Spain (but he influenced several of them as well), but I think because of that people forget that he was a very good midfielder, especially with Barca, and an important part of Cruyff's Barca dream-team (the "brain" as he is often described) which conquered the world, and whose philosphy influenced him deeply as a manager as well.

He inspired several Barca and Spain legends like Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, and Busquets, and he was the captain and starting regista in Cruyff's Barca dream team which is one of the best, most spectacular and most successful club sides of all time. And he was a mainstay for Spain during the 90s; unfortunately they struggled in major tournaments up until the golden generation came of age in 2008, but he was still fantastic, albeit not quite at the level of the likes of Xavi or Iniesta, who are all-time greats. But even so, he was a truly wonderful passer and pace-setter, one of the best of his time in that regard. He wasn't quick, good in the air, physically strong, or an out-right ball-winner, but he was very smart, had a good touch, and wasn't bad at shooting from range or making late runs, and could also help out defensively as a deep-lying midfield pivot on top of his playmaking ability from deep. Most people who don't rate just either never actually watched him play and therefore they don't remember him being recognised as much as other players in his position from that period (the same could be said of Albertini who was also a world class player in that position), or they know him mainly for his success and prowess as a manager, which has unfortunately somewhat overshadowed his fantastic playing career to an extent, but not because he wasn't also a top midfielder; it's just because he's one of the best, most successful, and most influential managers of all time.

@@brunaciompi1717 No, I politely disagree; I think Albertini was underrated if anything because he played in a great team; he was the deep-lying playmaker at Milan and his style complemented Desailly's energy and ball-winning abilities perfectly in midfield after Rijkaard left, and he helped dictate the game against the dream team in the 1994 Champion's League Final, and was brilliant in the scudetto victory in Capello's final season. I feel like he doesn't get talked about enough in comparison to some players in his position, maybe because he was Italian (and let's be honest, another Italian midfielder like Pirlo, who was obviously a level apart and an all-time great with the likes if Xavi and Iniesta, didn't get appreciated enough until Euro 2012 when he was at the end of his career, despite winning 2 Champions League titles with Milan and the World Cup with Italy before then). But Albertini was brilliant both with Milan and Italy during the 90s and early 2000s, especially in the 1994 World Cup and Euro 2000. He wasn't as good as Pirlo, but he resembled him in some ways, not quite as technical or as good at passing (but still world class in these areas), but more powerful, dynamic, hard-working, and a bit better defensively. He was certainly one of the best midfielders of his generation, as were many others. I think Pep had a better club career than Albertini as he won more titles and was more of the focal point of Barca's midfield. And it was better than Cesc's as well, but both had the better international careers, although the latter also had the fortune of being part of the golden generation, even though he didn't always start initially (which should also go against him a bit). Busquets had a better international career as well, but once again he was part of the golden generation, but unfortunately I feel like he didn't get appreciated enough at his best. Pep was probably more of a cross between him and Xavi while Busquets is more defensive minded even though he still pulls the strings, so he probably doesn't stand out as much as Pep did, especially as he was the main creative fulcrum pulling the strings, whereas Busquets was part of that magical trio along with Xavi and Iniesta.

Pep is and always will be my favorite manager of all time and no doubt in my mind would go down as the best manager of all time when he leaves the game. The way his teams play, they way he could adapt to different situations during a game, the winning mentality and energy he brings to any club shows why you cant really hate him (unless you are the opposing team). @@doggerlander Yes. I see Barca having Pique as the president, Xavi/Busi as the coach and assistant coach duo, Iniesta as their trainer and a lot more. But in the state that Barca is in right now, there's not much they can do except get rid of deadwood. I myself even hoped that Barca will be trophyless this year just so Koeman gets sacked. If you ask me, I'd sell a lot of players such as Luuk de Jong, Depay, Dembele, Roberto and Neto while others like Pique, Busi, and Alba can come off the bench. If you think about it we have more than enough young talents in the squad we just need the right coach to guide them. For me the ideal lineup for Barca using 4-3-3 would be Ter Stegen as the captain, Mingueza Araujo Garcia and Dest/Balde as the back four, I would personally move Frenkie in the CDM role and put Riqui and Pedri, RW is for Trincao LW is for Gavi and CF is obviously Ansu. But you can make the argument that Gavi is better off in the midfield and Ansu moved to the LW which leaves the CF role for Haaland assuming he joins Barca

This also reminds me of that odd Zlatan interview where he said that Guardiola was a shit player or something along those lines.
