Codesmith alum and current Senior Site Reliability Engineer at Google Brett Beekley discusses how Google SREs modify production resources safely and securely.
​As a Site Reliability Engineer, Brett builds the secure gateways between Google's internal services and the world. In this role, he has implemented quick+safe rollouts, protection from compromised accounts, and disaster testing. Brett was also a Google.org Fellow, leading the implementation of an ML-driven scorecard to predict where to find lead in water service lines.
​Most outages are caused by changes to production resources. Automated production changes are typically fast and secure, but can’t address every use case -- especially during an incident. An SRE with production access can fill this gap, but that access introduces reliability and security risk if they make a mistake or their account is compromised. To balance this risk, Google developed a framework that automates the majority of production operations, while providing routes for manual changes when necessary.

these type of individuals I guess discourage others (with little experience in coding) to join codesmith because of the future cohort learning inconsistency that will make those who have less experience to drop out.
