A beloved music teacher told me to enunciate every single word, so the people in the very back of every concert hall would hear every word without knowing the song. This man proves this. And to do it with ALL your hearT and ALL your strengTH and ALL your mighT...MOST of us know all the words to this angelic song.....but FEW could do it justice. Thank you, Sir. This is the first time I have heard your powerful voice. It shan't be the lasT.

The sense of awe is reflected in the vocals never quite catching up to/reaching the heights of the gorgeous music. Beautiful.

How wonderful. At the end you thought it would be a strong ending. But, to emphasise how much we lean on God, the ending is in awe, as if he can't speak anymore. Awesome how the Lord can speak through music.

I've seen Bryn sing Falstaff, Wotan, and How Great Thou Art !! Now there's diversity. Like the Choir, itself, he never fails to please. I was fortunate to be in the Tabernacle during the Mother's Day broadcast. The atmosphere was electric. Beautiful experience.

gryffwn: Mr Terfel has several other jobs around the world in the greatest opera/recital houses. He is the world's leading bass/baritone and commands respect and love everywhere he performs. Listen several times to his rendition and you will come to appreciate him even more. That he would come and sing with MTC is a great honor to Mac Wilberg etal.

gryffwn: If you really are Welsh, you ought to know that Bryn Terfel Jones is the best Welsh product since coal. Besides having the most beautiful voice in recorded history, he support Welsh culture and music like no one before, and his gifts to his country are the reasons for honorary degrees (the hardest ones to get) and the CBE.

To Mr. John P. You won't have to worry about Maistro Terfel's job plospects. He is continuing to tour all around the world, Singing recitals, Master classes, and oh yeah, being invited to the Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opera, the La Scala Opera, Sydney Opera House, Her Majesty's Royal Opera House, Vienna Opera House, the German Opera House, The Kennedy Center, and our hometown, the Metropolitan Opera house in New York City. This concert was a one-off for him, probably planned during a flight from the Met to Australia. You'd be lucky to be a shoe shiner for this great man! Oh yeah, he's also been awarded Elizabeth II, the prestigious "Order of the British Empire" So Mr. John P., I think he's good on the employment front. You, however need to go back to your 4th grade music appreciation class before you, start critiquing artists like Mr. Terfel SMH

Sandra Bandt I think Terfel is a fine OPERATIC singer, as well, but frankly, to my ear, this particular hymn rendition isn't that good.

Don R To be specific , he sounds more like he's singing a military anthem than a hymn.
@dionlindsay27 жыл бұрын
Well, he's not a lyric tenor after all! Grant you, his voice was more tuneful when he used to sing Mozart, and it's become more technical and powerful and less tuneful since he took to Wagner in a big way. It's probably coarsened a good bit.

How can you criticize Bryn for sounding like he does. The physique of his body and vocal mechanism create a metallic sound. His colors used in this are amazing and only a professional like Bryn could do it. But he sings a lot to Wagner and Verdi for that reason. Big metallic sound, but with such a refined sound and colors. It doesn't get much better than that.

To me,Terfel sounds rather rather gruff and imperious here. I would suggest he listen to the recording by Tennessee Ernie ford singing this one with a chorus before he does it again.
@tamolyn51419 жыл бұрын
Don R I think a part of the problem is the microphone, which is distorting Terfel's voice. For some reason, all singers with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir seem to sing amplified...even when it's unnecessary as it is in Terfel's case. Listen to him sometime singing the duet from the Pearl Fishers with popera idol Andrea Bocelli. Bocelli needs a microphone, so both singers are amplified. Terfel's voice sounds distorted there too. There's also a Christmas album by the MTC, which features a duet between of all people, Samuel Ramey and Sarah Vaughan. In an unsuccessful attempt to equalize Vaughan's rather small voice (and that's not meant as a slam) and Ramey's huge operatic bass, Vaughan has the microphone right up in her face, while Ramey sounds like he's somewhere out on the back forty.

YOU MUST BE JOKING HE'S THE BEST
@tamolyn51419 жыл бұрын
candd87 Not joking at all. The distortion of Terfel's voice is there because of the microphone which he doesn't need. I'm not slamming Terfel, just noting that the microphone distorts his voice. If you're talking about Samuel Ramey, the reason he was stationed far away from the microphone on that Christmas album is so his powerful voice wouldn't overpower Sarah Vaughan, whose small voice required that she sing right next to the mic.
@larrydonguy9 жыл бұрын
Tam Olyn The mic might certainly have been part of (what I hear as) a less than stellar singing the hymn, but would it have caused the rather loose vibrato effect on the big notes?
@tamolyn51419 жыл бұрын
Don R Part of it is Terfel's natural vibrato, which is has never been particularaly pleasant to my ear, but the mic is definitely distorting his voice. Terfel also has a tendency to force his voice, and that causes him to lose some control over the vibrato.

Fine rendition of this beautiful hymn. Unfortunately, the orchestral accompaniment distracted from the melody and really didn't support it tonally. A failed version. Thumbs down.
