Interesting. When I was young, I'll run at the beach, and now that I'm older, I walk bare feet at home. It feels good until you step on something. Ouch.

In my early 20s I lived in Boca Raton a couple years and took Karate. I wanted to toughen up my feet to pivot better for kicks. At first I could barely stand to walk down the driveway but soon I was walking around the block and had the best pivot and the strongest kick in the class. Was concerned at times about broken glass here and there but never actually stepped on any. Moved away and gave all that up. YMMV.

I've always walked barefoot in the home and use thinner soled shoes for walking. My PT suggested I also add 30 seconds of running barefoot on a treadmill when at the gym (with socks). It's interesting to feel the footstrike difference vs with modern running shoes. I'm not about to change my running shoes, but I agree with the idea that foot strengthening with targeted intent is beneficial.

As a physicist, the holistic aspect of grounding sounds made up to me. If ground has some slight negative charge, then whatever causes it would cause the same negative charge in, for example, floors of our homes. So just walking barefoot at home should give the same effects. Sorry, but I'm sceptical here

Thanks for commenting- it’s good to be sceptical. There is some science to suggest the benefits I talked about “The effects of grounding (earthing) on inflammation, the immune response, wound healing, and prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases” J Inflamm Res. 2015; 8: 83-96. @@TheRunExperiencethanks for the source. Was there any follow up to that research? 9 years seems plenty for peer reviews and other confirmations. If there weren't, then probably the theory is a miss

Hi @dotintegeral, you did a good job raising the skepticism. There has been no follow up in a real way because the work lacked any quality methodology to actually follow up on it. But the work continues because it keeps resurfacing in dangerous videos like this.

I'm going to skip the snake oil part 🤔 and go straight to what I consider it has some actual ground 😁 . I've been running with bare-foot style shoes for some months now, at the moment I'm doing about 50% of the Km in them. Because the sole is minimal they force you to run with good technique, no heel striking (it will hurt if you do). Also Your feet has to work more, so you strengthen its muscles in a way that a normal shoe won't. It forces you to use your feet, heel and knees more efficiently because you don't have a rubber sole that absorbs each impact. I've been able to go through marathon training with no injury or niggle or anything while doing 80+ Km in peak weeks. Just be very careful when you start using them, build up very very slowly even if you are a strong runner, it's like starting to run again. Also although it feels so nice and free with them, you're actually faster with carbon plates and a good stack for race day, so I still keep using all my shoes, including carbon ones for key sessions.

Thanks for commenting. As I said at the end of the video, even if the holistic benefits doesn’t resonate then at least give barefoot/minimal shoe training a go for the obvious foot strengthening/stability.
@Qualier

There are well evidenced benefits to barefoot/minimalist shoes walking and running. There is no evidence for grounding and the nonsense you spouted towards the end of the video. You lose credibility by including pseudoscience. People will spend time on this instead of something that has actually been shown to produce benefits.

I have a feeling that this video has been targeted with negative comments by one angry person. Thanks for keeping this video up on YT despite the idiot that keeps on requiring scientific evidence for something that we all know is important. This is dangerous BS. It's clear that the work to actually review the science here hasn't been done. The study on sleep cited in your cited study fails most of the basic requirements for meaningful science. Simple things like reporting how the sleep duration or quality were recorded are missing. The control group has no meaningful control. It's simply not replicable. The second study in your cited study looks at cortisol and sleep, a lot of their results just fluctuate between normal ranges. It's not at all clear if their results are one offs or means taken across the study duration. You can just easily conclude that the results are random or down to stress of doing the experiment. Your intentions are clearly good, but I fear this is some dangerous level of ignorance or simply a lack of effort.

This doesn't recuse of sharing dangerous information. You are an important and influential person, when you give credence to these claims you give credence to the idea that this is a cure. The body of work around 'grounding' also links footwear to the rise of obesity, the rise of diabetes, and subsequently, simply grounding yourself will cure your obesity and even cure diabetes. If you read the studies you'll notice they struggle to talk about their methodology and tend towards ambiguity to hide the fact that the thing they're doing doesn't work. If you want to accept that this works, you have to also accept that in the case of cortisol (reference 13), grounding has made cortisol worse for some of the people involved in the study, in some cases doubling it. But they don't report what those values are, not means, not medians, no SDs, not even one-offs. All we can say is maybe, and you are asking someone to test if something resonates with them, something that might double their cortisol? In that study they present 66 time points in total, 40 of those time points have cortisol worse with the grounding intervention than with the control. So more often than not, serum cortisol was worse in the grounding intervention. This the next step if we ignore the methodological problems, we have to accept some of the reality of what they're actually presenting. If you don't accept the philosophical problems, you have to accept the methodological problems, if you don't accept the methodological problems you have to accept the data they presented which shows grounding to increase cortisol.

It also didn't say anything about the significant immediate injury risk of going straight from a high heel drop shoe to bare foot. It may be good in the long run but it's irresponsible not to mention the immediate risks when adjusting.

The physical benefits of going barefoot for running is well proven and there is good science in reputable journals on the holistic benefits. See an example below Practical applications of grounding to support health. Biomed J. 2023 Feb; 46(1): 41-47. Published online 2022 Dec 5. doi: 10.1016/j.bj.2022.12.001

Hi @Natsin0, I don't know if you've managed to read the article that was linked to you. It surprises me it got published at all. The vast majority of the claims that are made aren't even backed up by any science. The article talks about physical activity as part of a treatment plan for cancer. If you skim through and don't read the actual article, the author says "Cancer treatment; walk a dog grounded". Not a big leap for people to make, in this article, that grounding is part of an effective cancer treatment. People are at risk of believing that they could forgo other treatments, because grounding might work.
