The bullets diameter is what correlates with barrel diameter. Yet bullets will be slightly larger than the barrel. By slightly I mean we move over a decimal place and go into the thousandths. Like a barrel that is .30 cal will shoot a .308 cal bullet. This prevents gas from escaping and for the bullet to be more stable. Also if you have rifling a larger bullet diameter allows the rifling to be engaged.
