Your gut microbiome, a bustling community of microorganisms, is a vital player in your overall health. It doesn’t just impact your digestive system - it has a profound influence on your brain health and well-being.
Jonathan talks with Prof. Tim Spector and Prof. Nicola Segata to find out how this community can keep us healthy as we age.
Nicola Segata is a professor and principal investigator at the Laboratory of Computational Metagenomics, at the CIBIO department of the University of Trento. His background is in metagenomics, machine learning, microbiome research, and microbial genomics. Tim Spector is ZOE's scientific co-founder and one of the world's top 100 most cited scientists.

Is it possible to add a reference list of the research that is being summarised in these fantastic podcasts? I work in healthcare and I talk about the Zoe information a lot at work. My fellow medical colleagues are very skeptical, so providing them with specific research will help this information being accepted, rather than "I just heard it on a podcast".

I'd recommend Dr Gabor Mate's work on the link between trauma, stress, suppressed emotion and auto immune disease. Arguably a bigger impact on those conditions than your gut.

I would love to see a video on the facial microbiome. I’m recently diagnosed with Rosacea, and struggling to find holistic treatments. I’m 99% plant based, low processed foods. I drink very little alcohol. I do eat fish@ 2 times a month. I can’t afford tons of supplements, so I work at diversity of plants and take a B12 supplement. There is so much conflicting info on Rosacea. It affects so many people, please address this topic! Thanks.

Try a carnivore diet. Plant based leads to many many problems long term.

I'd like to know this too. My biggest triggers for rosacea flares (facial flares and itchy papules/pustules) are histamine-releasing foods, peanuts, cinnamaldehyde-containing foods, spinach, and gluten. Dairy is not a problem. Drinking tea without milk causes intense nausea. Are these allergies due to a disrupted gut biome? Is this a symptom of an autoimmune disorder? Is it something else? It's frustrating not to be able to eat food that's considered healthy! It also disrupts the ability to eat restaurant meals with friends. I stay home. :(

Half of people with rosacea are insulin resistant, it is a blood glucose issue. All those plants are not helping you, as all carbohydrates spike insulin. Try eating much more coconut oil, your system needs more fat. Oily fish every other day would also improve things for iron and zinc. Your brain and eyes need crucial DHA from the Omega3 fatty acids in fish and cannot store it more than 2 days, needs constant fuelling. Phytates and oxalates in beans and plants block us from absorbing ENOUGH nutrients and protein so you steadily become deficient. Best wishes

@@eulalia3446how did you come across this video? The gut microbiome becomes much less diverse with a carnivore diet.

@@DawnRK3204 My personal experience (like the majority of people) is that of becoming exceedingly unwell after some years on a home cooked, whole foods, varied plant based diet. Among many other problems, my autoimmune illness became exceedingly aggressive and my guts were in terrible shape. 18 months on a mostly carnivore diet has healed my guts and has brought a myriad of other health benefits. To me Tim Spector is aging badly - he now looks older than his age and he is starting to look frail. I don't think his plant heavy approach is working very well.

Yes, a topic that i would love to be covered is a problem that has been lifelong for me. So i was born via caesarian section and my Mom didn't breastfeed me. That was due to tye hospital not bringing me to be nursed as they fed me apparently to there procedures at thst time. The year 1958 i was born. Nursing was being discouraged at that time. So i have had lifelong mental and physical health challenges that have been most overwhelming. I have always wondered if there was anyrhing that could help me have a better life outcome. Insteadd of just throwing antidepressants at me and so on. I have never found any Doctors or even friends .or family who believe or understand bmy health challenges. I would be so happy and appreciative of any science hased information on this or really anything that i could do to have better life functioning!!! Thank-you so much in advance!!

Can I ask why you are only offering one microbiome test when you join Zoe? I would be interested to take part if I can see what improvements I can achieve during the time I’m doing it. It would be a great motivation. As you only get one test included, I’ve been hesitant to join so far.

I'd say potentially quite a bit, but perhaps depending on how healhty/unhealthy -/dysbiotic ones microbiome is to start with(?)
@theKNI
@theKNI 3 ай бұрын
@@butching6665 I would actually say the opposite, though I have no idea in reality. The medication used for colonoscopy prep only lasts a number of hours and essentially empties most of the digestive system. I wouldn't imagine that it has a huge impact on gut microbiome in the same way that regular bowel movements don't unless you count them across months. I'd say if you were taking those meds regularly then it might have a larger impact but one evening of bowel prep for this procedure is not that much more than a couple of days worth of whatever is normal for someone.

It's a shame that Prof Spector can't get the message across to his medical peers then, because very few medical professionals will accept that the diet has any role in health or healing, other than in a most simplistic way. And until relatively recently, Prof Spector too would have gone along with his colleagues. He is a recent convert.

@@pushthetempo2 I worked in NHS hospitals in London and Oxford for over two decades. In Neurology, Rheumatology and Oncology, and Gerontology, all specialties where you would consider diet to play an important part, patients are often told what they eat makes no difference to outcomes and to eat what they like. Inpatient diets in most hospitals are nutrient deficient and pretty grim, and long stay patients often leave much depleted and with weight loss because of the white bread, limp lettuce and over-boiled veg+mince diet. Professor Spector is a fairly recent convert to the idea of diet as a addendum to better health, and as he says himself nutrition is given no weight in medical training.

@@kateking3953 @kateking3953 okay I though you were talking about your standard GP who would usually tell you to eat healthier - more fruit and veg, drink less alcohol, basic stuff I know. Maybe they don't stress it enough though yes. Well thats quite shocking to hear in oncology, they dont talk about diet. The specialists have access to all the same information we do; I assumed most informed people knew the Mediterranean diet is the best for preventing cancer, that idea has been around for a while now. Or the Japanese and all the studies and evidence show that and they are clearly the healthiest and longest living people on the planet. I retract the sarcastic tone of my previous comment. Hopefully they are telling patients smoking and alcohol and stress are a big factor too 🫣

What is the time scale for microbes to double? Five minutes, an hour. A dormant microbe, feed the food it likes, we will see a result in a day. On the other hand, if we' lack a guy more, it could take weeks to acquire.
