Haiti transformed from being the richest colony on earth to being the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. This spectacular downfall reached an all-time low in 2010 with a massive earthquake causing widespread destruction, and managed to sink even lower after that. But there IS hope.

Because most of them time they do more damage then good. For example the U.S.A occupation, yes they helped somewhat but they ended up shutting down our governmental institutions , raping our women, & slaughtering many civilians. Overall a mistreatment of the people and a disgrace.

I would sound racist, but Haiti is nation with obvious roots in Africa - same colonial history (colonial powers fault), same corruption and dictators, without any visible hope to recover. But at the same time, with incredible natural wealth (in history mainly agricultural, today also tourist paradise) - just handle it better. Those natural disasters could also be handled to some degree - look at Japan.

How can a country in such a desperate situation be lifted out of it? It seems hopeless. If international aid comes in, corruption swallows a large portion. Then there are the gangs, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other forces that work to keep the country down. What can be done?

It's interesting that even in student union politics Haiti is held to randsom: can remember that in 2010, a welsh student union president had (with the protection of the university) stolen Haiti Earthquake Appeal funds raised from a successful event that was meant to help the Haitians recover from the disaster. That president used the funds to pay the debt of a failed event they set up, with not one penny actually being used for the purposes it was meant. Of course like any other corrupt official, they never faced charges or investigation because they were protected by the university (who themselves were suspected of taking advantage of International Student's finances for their own ends). Looking back a decade later and it's just utterly saddening that there was always a corrupt busybody looking to profit from the continuing disaster of the Haitians - more should've stood up to help 😔

I have just watched your marvellous video on the Dutch reclamation of the land through drainage and dikes (ik moest lachen, in het Engels, dat woord heeft twee betekeningen😂) I lived in Amsterdam for 2 1/2 years and my mother was born over there but I didnt know much about this subject til now and I am sure she doesn't either - so I have sent it to her and I am sure she will find it as fascinating as I did.... As for Haiti, mijn God wat een ramp. It is incredibly depressing.... Nonetheless, these are all fascinating, living, breathing stories which should be told.... I can never understand how a channel like this exists like a shining beacon on a tiny island of intellectual rigour amongst a sea of drek, yet has fewer members and views than such dross as "Americans react to..." and ludicrous conspiracy theory tabloid nonsense... This channel should have a million plus subscribers and each video be viewed by hundreds of thousands. ..i wish you every success and apologies for my terrible Dutch 😂❤

The problem with Haiti is that it is the only country in human history that has been successfully founded by a slave revolt. This is equivalent to building a civilization from scratch.
