@@darcyemorawski4751 This is common, which is why actors tend to shy away from evil characters. My favorite (positive) example of this is Stanley Tucci in The Lovely Bones. He asked the directors if he could gain weight for the role because he didn't want his face to be associated with the character after the movie is released. His character was repulsive (I won't spoil it), so it made sense that he had the foresight to navigate any potential fallout.

I understand why she would not watch it. I think it would be hard to watch someone portray a character like that then come home as if nothing happened. Seeing someone you love do that is understandably hard for some people. Even though you know it’s not them. I think it’s easy for us to look at it and go “it’s easy to separate that; why not her?” But we don’t love and live with him as the person he is at home. What if you saw the one you love act completely differently and do things they usually wouldn’t. Then come home a different person. It’d be a little unsettling for some people. It is our natural instinct to notice things that are out of the norm for someone. And that would definitely be one.

i'm not surprised he keeps making the distinction. People are acting brand new in these comments. Like "fans" don't start to think that an actor is a character. I don't know how many times i've heard actors reference times when fans approach them in public and treat them like their character. Cussing them out and yelling and whatever. Lena Heady/Cersei Lannister comes to mind. What he's saying and how his wife feels about watching him portray such a man convincingly is not farfetched. People are looking for problems in his wife. Why? I don't know.

its sad. I don't know Joe but he seem really sweet in his interviews. People need to understand that having the "bad" guy is what makes the good guy so good. You need the heel because it makes watching them go diwn soo good. I love Joe for making Fred so hateable. Just like I love Lena for making Cersei so hateable. If I ever meet either of those actors I will show them love. I think we all need to show our "bad" guys love because without them there would be nothing for the "good" guys to do.

Exactly! Jack Gleeson who portrayed Joffrey Lannister stopped acting altogether because of all the negative "feedback" from portraying such a dispicable role. These characters give viewers permission the love to hate a villianous persona from caricature in pantomime to shades of grey characters where they are portrayed as multi-faceted from writers', directors', cinematographers', and actors' nuanced creative interpretations of bringing their story to life. Having portrayed my character, Jule, as a semi-reformed member of society, when outside forces threaten her or her family's security or if someone is more depraved than she is, it doesn't take much for the needle to swing back into the red.

The poor guy seems to have to constantly defend himself for playing this role. Anyone who has followed to any extent Joe‘s considerable legacy as an actor knows of his incredible ability to slip into any role, be it lightweight or much darker, as is the case in The Handmaid’s Tale. He really does „get under the skin“ of the character he’s playing. That’s what is called good, nay, great acting!

It's difficult at times to watch Commander Waterford not just because he's so dark and deeply, horribly flawed, but because that's my Shakespeare, one of the most beautiful men alive. Flashforward was one of the best programmes I have ever seen. He was amazing in this as were most of the characters. Great script plot, everything. I couldn't believe they only made one series of it. I still reel from feeling robbed that there was no more series 9 years on.

I can't imagine the hate mail he must get from people that can't seem to separate fantasy from reality. You are a fantastic actor, so glad to see you in the handmaids tale. Your character is diabolical, I for one know this is not you at call. Thanks for the great work you do.

You are a brilliant actor who has done 200% justice to Comander Waterford character. Your children and wife should embrace your talents, so as the others. You don't have to justify to the world who you are and how different you are to the characters you act on screen or theatre. Keep showing the talents and be proud of yourself. All the best to you.

As an empath, when I watch him I feel all of the good in him so I'm conflicted constantly with cold evil Fred and the truly "human" Joe Fiennes underneath...good to see this video. Keep up the good work in your outstanding acting and with being a superb father and husband. 💜

I love literally everything he does, but my favorite is Commisar Danilov in Enemy at the Gate, with Jude Law. The complexity of the character he played was just excruciatingly exquisite…becoming best friends with the man who saved his life, making him a hero, and then hating him for taking the one thing he wanted most: The love of his life. He made me love, hate and pity him all at the same time. That’s freakin brilliant. Frankly, I think he’s a much better actor than his brother. Ralph is better looking,, but Joe is by far the more versatile and multidimensional actor.

I respect actors that can play these characters and not allow the role to effect them. They call it “character bleed” when a characters thoughts and emotions bleed into the actor irl. It makes sense, when you are constantly trying to encapsulate this character and play the part authentically

A common misconception about actors in movies and t.v shows is that the person who plays the “Good Guy” or “Hero” is always nice in real life, and the other way around for the actors who play the “Bad Guy” or “villain.” But in reality a lot of times it’s the opposite. People who play the villains a lot of times end up being very nice and kind people. Where as the people who play the “Kind and whole-sum” hero and up being pretty nasty in real life. It’s always easier to act as someone who has the complete opposite personality as yourself, than to act as someone who is similar.
