I played this course a month ago. Just loved the fact I got to play the oldest course in the world. Really cool being in a horse racing track too.

The horse racing track is definitely a cool feature - although not when I needed to hit a 1 iron over it!!!

I'm a bit worried about your putting Hannah, your distance control can be a bit off. But you were not certain which club in the bag was the putter! It was great fun to watch you both negotiating your way around the course with hickories. A very watchable episode.

Jack's topped tee shot after his comment about you not being able to play "back in the day" was karma! 😅 Enjoyable video to watch. I remember accompanying my father while he golfed with his friends back in the 1960's and he used a MacGregor driver with a persimmon head (although it did have a steel shaft). I was around 7 or 8 years old and I tried hitting his clubs and hit two shots straight into a canal. I thought "What a stupid game", and never played again until my 30's, although very infrequently, but I started playing regularly in the early 2000's and haven't stopped since.

hahaha I did think it was a bit of karma too! I still think what a stupid game sometimes!

Womens golf certainly was a thing back in the day. Those wood shafts are way stronger than you think. Clubs without grooves were a thing up until around 1900 when players started dot punching the face to get more grip. Grooves on faces didn't start until around 1915. Shafts were often "bent" deliberately to suit a players loft and lie requirements. Remember that any professional, of any era, would have clubs designed or fitted to their specs. What you do need to do is have a bit of practice before you play to get some idea of lofts and distances for your clubs (see how you were both striking the ball better as the round progressed) - and Hannah - you need a putter in the bag - not what looks like a cleek (driving iron). For anyone thinking about playing hickory i would always advise - think pitching wedge swing (rhythm and tempo) for all clubs in the bag. The alloy mallet putter by "Mills" was part of a full set of alloy metal woods first produced in 1895 - not in the 1970's like most people think. A lot of slippy leather grips are replaced with suede side out for more grip; and a low compression ball. I've been playing hickory golf for about 10 years - With a bit of practice you can fall in love with the hickory game. Also there's lots of hickory videos on Ytube for more interest.

We always have a hickory challenge at Epsom on founders day - We we’re established in 1899! Great fun! The pro has to play a full round we get away with a couple of drives and putts.

Fantastic stuff. Those old fellas must have been some players when you factor in the kind of balls they used to use and the fact the course would have been nowhere near the condition of todays

Golf was played differently in those days with the clubs and more importantly the feathery ball. All the players of this era kept the ball as low as possible to the ground. Let’s say you had 150 yards in they would be reading the shot like we do putting and running it in. Think how many links courses have holes up the sides of the hole with the occasional hole with bunkers in the front of the green. These days it’s all about launch.

Is the MOI on those clubs comparable to the Wilson D9 irons by any chance?

Range finders are against the rules in hickory golf. Besides, you don't really know how far you can hit the clubs the first try. I play 100% hickory golf all the time and use the 200, 150 and 100 yard markers. Play golf shots not yardage.

Hickory sticks played on a manicured course. Not quite as comparable to those great players of the past.
