@@strawberryjogurt6134 This is exactly what happened to me! I have played Harvest Moon since the Game Boy Advance and was always excited about the next games that would come out. Then when The Lost Valley came out I bought it without question - because it simply had the HM name. I knew straight away after about ten seconds of game play that something was wrong. I was in such shock... It was so terribly bad and nothing like what I had come to expect from the actual creators of the game. I couldn't believe how Natsume had ripped me off. I will never buy another HM game from Natsume again and strictly stick with Story of Seasons (the original creators of the game). I want to support the actual people that created, designed and put in all that hard work over the past 20 years to make what is now Story of Seasons rather than support a company that put in about 1% of what the original creators did and are now using the localized western name of the old HM games in order to capitalize on money from people who might not know that HM is no longer created by the same people who made the older games. They may not have done anything wrong legally, but it is literally a slap in the face to those original creators and to many of us fans of the series. ): HM under Natsume now is just a copy and paste of even worst quality game play than what it is trying to copy - it has none of the charm, awesome artwork, heart or love put into it at all and I reckon all they will ever be doing is chasing the coattails of the original creators, as they don't seem to be able to create something wholly their own to begin with. Shame on them. As you can see I am seriously still very butt hurt about the whole thing lol!

@@Lexipumpkin783 They make the bare minimum effort possible, just look at the newest harvest moon, it looks like a very crappy mobile game made by someone in college. They either make a game nobody asked (the "minecraft" harvest moon) or make a minimum-effort farm sim game. Even the graphics are horrible and the scenario completely lacks any detail and polish. It is literally the minimum they can do just to milk the franchise, I bet those games have a very low budget and very short development time to maximize the profits without putting any effort. Watch the trailer of Harvest Moon: One World and then watch Story of Seasons Pioneers of Olive Town, both games released in the same year. It's like seeing a game made by a single developer in 2 months (HM) versus a game made by a company with years of development (SoS).

Long story short: "Harvest Moon" is now called "Story of Seasons". Every new game coming out titled "Harvest Moon" is nothing more than a heartless, lazy cashgrab. Natsume could've changed the title in order to prevent confusion, but they didn't. Instead, they try to make money with people's ignorance. I didn't knew about the name change when I bought "Harvest Moon - Light of Hope". And oh boy, I felt so ripped of. -.- (But steam gave me my money back, so.. yay! Go steam!)

tbh i got to thank DangerouslyFunny for playing Harvest moon the shit of cashgrab and telling everyong of his watchers that this wasnt worth 30$ and here i was hoping for a new farming game to play while i wait for multiplayer but if the farming in the game is 1000000% not even worth it its a horriable game since you can get all the money you ever need by mining and what else if you faint nothing lost like why have the stamina meter if it pointless and omg the feilds just grow EVERYTHING back in less then three days oh suddenly giant boulders randomly appered tottally logical. Also NO MODS UNTIL THE NEXT PC GAME IM OUT. The 1 thing that could had made the game worth buying will never happen since the developers forbid mods until the consol version or the next game got it smelling like shit is brewing

That's a really messed up situation. I grew up playing Harvest Moon, not "Story of Seasons". This wouldn't be a problem if the localized version kept the name "Ranch Story" to begin with, then there would not be a name change and this entire situation averted. Of course, the name "Ranch Story" doesn't click like Harvest Moon does and neither does "Story of Seasons", the name itself is an SOS.

I feel so fooled! Last time I owned a Harvest moon game was when I was 13. Feeling in the christmas mood, I got myself a present and bought Harvest moon skytree village. And I was so shocked! Everything was missing, so simple and lacking any complexity! It was not even able to lift up things. And now I find out I didn't actually buy a Harvest Moon game, but Natsume bullshit instead. Due to increasing demand, I have decided to make a video discussing what happened to Rune Factory. It’s like Harvest Moon got a doppelgänger so it legally changed its name to Story of Seasons to escape it’s stalker, but then people thought the doppelgänger was the real person. RIP this poor game has been violated when trying to make an honest living. Without this video I would have never known why Harvest Moon changed so much, and that it actually changed its name. People definitely need this explanation, I hate that people saying that SoS is a HM rip-off. They should do their research...I want a new Rune Factory! I heard of popolocrois but that isn't exactly Rune Factory. There's a game called Re:Legend which is the closest thing to Rune Factory that I've seen in a while, the thing is that, the game is still in kickstarter! The next closest thing was Stardew Valley but, that was missing a more in-depth battle system and monster taming that Rune Factory had. Seriously, someone, give us back our Rune Factory or something close to it! Don't get me wrong, I loved stardew valley but, Re:Legend seems to be closer to it, I hope that it passes it's kickstarter. They did it because a lot of ppl spammed those „it’s not original“ comments. The game is still great fun. It’s better than their ds tries before in terms of mechanic and pretty back to the xseed roots. I mean story of season is likely better yet they keep getting better and it’s still a fun series... maybe 80% the quality of SOS. Some charactersprites and the mainchar module are bad though. I would like to see some improved versions on steam again later on. Competition is never bad, they went in a friendly matter not with bad words. ( the SOS publisher actually congratulated natsume). And I prefer it over the horrible stardew graphics.. can’t rly handle most of the designchoices - yet design =|= gameplay

Mystary TV the new graphic style really deters me. I grew up with TOT, and AP and the art style/ perspective was what grasped my 12 yeah old brain like a vice grip, and refused to let go. I’d spend DAYS on my wii trying to make my farm the best, falling in love with my favorite character, and ringing all the bells or making the rainbows. I’ll miss the old style, and needless to say I will not be getting the new game.

Yessss I thought the same. I love the original DS release and the games after it just didn't have the charm and rewarding gameplay. I mean.. just those minigames that only activate by doing something random at a specific time etc. I feel like they put so much work into creating all these details. Most later games didn't have that and they also got too far away from the original gameplay (e. g. farming got simplified to add other stuff to do instead).No wonder stardew Valley sold so well since it returned to the basics that made HM DS so good. But i have to say the two Rune factory games for Wii and PS3 are amazing as well...they added so many different things to do without cutting much of their individual depth (farming, battle, crafting, cooking etc.).

The only bad thing about RF is that IGN had a vendetta against it or something, which made it seem bad and not enough people got it. Other than 3 and oceans, RF was an amazing series. Unfortunately Stardew Valley doesn't have anywhere near the same appeal as HMDS has for me, I think because in my mind it feels kind of like a rip-off of the series and there's still a ton of features missing (and I can't get over the art style, it doesn't have the charm and feels too flat for me) I like the HD textures in HMDS(in comparison) than SV, and the small progression goals such as sprites or farm helpers that are missing in SV. Don't get me wrong, i want to like the game, but something's missing from it that's stopping it from being up there for me. I'm hoping the newer story of seasons game, even after ToT will be great, maybe throwback to 64, AWL, DS, MFoMT, HMRF1,2,4, and Frontier some features from those such as combination crops, crop specialization(HMDS w/ the seed leveling system) home-made furniture(RF Tides of Destiny) Multiple home styles(Magical Melody, Trio of towns) actual grid based crop system (HM SNES through HM Island of happiness[?]) multiple cow breeds (AWL, Trio of towns) more than one goat(unlike AWL) old-school mining system(yeah i know they're not great, but I enjoyed the hell out of them, HM FoMT,MFoMT, HMDS, HM MM) Lastly, HMDS Jewelry-style upgrade system (where you get the jewelry from the mines to improve your stats) Those are my wish list, and I only listed the stuff from the games I've played(so no tree of tranquility, Another Wonderful Life, ANB, SoS ToTT, RF2, GBC 1,2,3) Maybe Stardew Valley will update to make it appeal more to me, but with how indie developers are, that's not going to happen(or at least what the modders and creators of the game told me, at least when i asked about graphics, and maybe getting a mod/update for them.)

the only reason Natsume had the license for so long was Wada was loyal to them because no company in America wanted anything to do with it and when Wada left marvelous they dropped Natsume as fast as they could because they hadn't been entirely happy with them for years.. Now marvelous and xseed is slowly going to remake the old games so they'll be under the new series when not making new chapters of it

Excellent job explaining this all! I was deep into the fandom while this entire transition happened and it was confusing while I was watching everything happen. I remember someone found that Natsume trademarked the title Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley (this was right before Story of Seasons was formally announced) and we were so confused since the new Bokujo game didn't really take place in a lost valley. I ran a panel on the history of Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons at the last convention I went to. Everyone there aside from a handful of people didn't know that the series even had a name change! It's a shame it isn't a well-known subject since the new SoS game is really fun! I'll share around this video to help spread the word, especially since you explained it so well~!

I'm a huge Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons fan and remembered XSeed announcing SoS, then Natsume a day later announcing their own HM game. Even now, with games like Stardew Valley, I have to always say that HM isn't HM anymore. Now I finally have a good video to explain the split.

I had no idea that anyone didn't know about the split at that Harvest Moon is now Story of Seasons. I do like how XSEED's has localized RF4 and the current Story of Seasons games that we have today. They get commended a LOT when they listen to player feedback. I still remember how Mistel's name was going to be a variation on "Michael", but of course they listened to us and what they wanted. Natsume doesn't seem to be doing that at all (and they seem to be getting sloppy with their character designs. I'm staring HARD at Luke in TLV.) So far, many have enjoyed Light of Hope and I hope they continue to do so and at least NOT listen to the fans who scold them for liking it. It'll be nice, though, to see Tale of Two Towns with the original names that fans wanted (which Natsume didn't listen to us about.) I can hardly wait to see if it'll get localized here. I was a huge Harvest Moon fan and was... Confused when Story of Seasons came out, containing Cam from "A Tale of Two Towns" and many others. I thought it was just a side game or something, thus ignored it. But then... More Story of Seasons titles continued to come out with the art style and feel that I knew for Harvest Moon, and the new Harvest Moon seeming foreign and strange. I was even more confused. With the info provided in this video... I'm sort of disappointed with Natsume. How can they use such a well-known and beloved title? But XSeed isn't completely innocent either; they could have announced this switch in title and possibly explained why there was a switch to begin with. Anyway, thank you for clearing this up.

Back in 2014 XSEED put out a video explaining that they will be localizing Bokujo Monogatari under the Story of Seasons name (they couldn't call it Harvest Moon in that video) sadly that video didn't get too many views, this video actually has five times more views than their E3 announcement video. I can understand why Natsume did this, but at the same time I feel like they should be trying to actively improve their games to compete with Bokujo. Sadly that train is going to run out inevitably.

So that the truth would be spread to many more people that loves the game, doesn't know about the split, and specially those that got disappointed on the "harvest moon: light of hope" game. While Marvelous does not own the Rune Factory IP, they brought on the entire Rune Factory development team when Neverland went under. They have the most room to try and get a Rune Factory 5 made one day.

That's not how it works. Marvelous cannot sue because Natsume OWNS the use of the trademark. That's like saying Rare should sue Nintendo for continuing to make Donkey Kong Country games when it was Rare that had been originally developing them in the Super Nintendo and N64 era before Microsoft bought the company in 2002. Nintendo OWNS the Donkey Kong character and even has the rights to use Diddy Kong even though Rare created the Diddy. You don't understand how copyright, trademarks, and business works!

I fell in love with A Wonderful Life after picking it up from a discount bin at Walmart. I was like 21, and had never heard of harvest moon up to that point. After AWL my husband got me magical melody for christmas, and I wasn't a fan, but it was cute. Still played it. But I was a Die hard AWL fan. Years later, I had kids. And my oldest kid had a 3DS. And my husband wanted to surprise me by buying me the newest harvest moon game. Biggest disappointment ever. I was like... What... The crap is this?! I gave it to my kid, who sort of liked it, but I was so bummed. Then I freaking googled why it sucked so much and discovered story of seasons. I got duped. Never again. Lol

@@MrGo-ib1wt yes, I have since played story of seasons and it's a massively huge difference from the monstrosity that was The Lost Valley. I think what I loved about A Wonderful Life was the fact that a) you age and the town ages with you and b) your kids age. All of the other games I have found that I lose interest after having a kid. Like the game is complete. Nothing else can really change, the end. I'm playing Friends of Mineral Town now, for the first time, and REALLY enjoying it. Hopefully it will keep me distracted for a year 😂

And to this day I'm still correcting some fans of the SoS series who don't understand name branding and how it works. But I can boil it down to this. SoS is slowly getting back to it's roots in spite of the recent fun/silly crossover... Expect something old to become something new is all I'll say.. ;3 Harvest Moon now sucks and is currently stuck in mobile app hell look/play and Stardew Valley is still on top of the haystack... For now...

All I know is that before Neverland went under it may have been in preliminary development. Since Marvelous acquired the Rune Factory team, it's just a matter of waiting to see what happens now.

The current harvest moon series is shooting itself in the foot. The games are terrible and since the HM name is attached to them, people will really notice that something is off too. If they had named them something else then people wouldn't be as pissed, but they use "Harvest Moon" to suck people in. That's really shitty, and it's sad that people get caught in this confusion. But atleast it won't last forever as most people have moved on. I'm glad to see that Story of Seasons is doing so well. Whenever I see people complaining about the new sucky harvest moon games, I always make sure to advertise Story of seasons.

Dude thank you. It makes sense why I was confused, simply because of my ignorance of publishing/localizing/developing. I was a kid playing Harvest Moon, and never heard from it again, until now.
