How Hasbro Makes Action Figures Look Just Like Movie Stars

Hasbro introduced its Photo Real technology in 2017. Action figures from Marvel and Star Wars look exactly like the actors. Here's how they do it.
Following is a transcript of the video:
Matt Stuart: This isn't actually Paul Rudd. It's an action figure of Paul Rudd. And it's got a lot more detail than the action figures you may be used to. You've probably seen action figures like this before. It's based on a movie, has some accessories, and it kind of looks like the star. I think? Definitely not an exact resemblance.
Up until a few years ago, action figures didn't really look like their movie counterparts. That changed when Hasbro introduced its Photo Real technology in 2017. Used on both its Marvel Legends and Star Wars Black Series lines, the technology allows the company to create figures with faces that look exactly like the actor they're based on. The figures begin like most others. Things like accessories, outfits, and points of articulation are all planned out digitally, and a basic sculpt and molds of the figure are created.
Dwight Stall: Once we have a 3D sculpt that we're in love with, that matches our design spec, it gets turned over to the model shop. They will cast it, which is a process of taking the files, growing the files, taking those pieces, casting them in rubber molds so that we can make duplicates.
Matt Stuart: Once the duplicates are made, the process of making this plain white figure look just like its character can begin. It starts with some pretty high-res photos of the actor in costume. The photos are provided by the studio. In this case, Marvel, which works with Hasbro to make sure they get the photos and angles they need. But for something like Star Wars, which didn't have lifelike action figures in mind when it began filming more than 40 years ago...
Sam Smith: So a lot of it kind of relies on on-set photography, especially for kind of getting some of the character likenesses. Really just being able to capture every angle of the character, every angle of the costume, and really being able to accurately recreate that in a digital sculpt.
Matt Stuart: Once the reference photos are chosen, the real fun begins.
Dwight Stall: We will take these types of images, and we'll send them down to our model shop, and they will take these into different programs, cut them apart, and reconfigure them.
Tony Colella: I can show you that we use our 3D modeling software. And in here, we take all the photo reference that they've given us, zoom in, get all these details. We create multiple layers, and we just kinda go in here, and we start refining different shapes, different colors.
Matt Stuart: The sculptors use the reference photos and the already-crafted head sculpts to digitally recreate the actors and paint their face onto the digital sculpt.
Laura Jones: When I get the head in, it's actually just like a plain, blank, white head. And then from there, I add all the colors. I'm just constantly going back and forth between the reference and the sculpt and painting, and we try to recreate it.
Matt Stuart: The artist might add some blush, refine the eyes, increase the overall saturation - basically making sure any detail in the actor's face is mirrored in the figure.
Laura Jones: Add shading to underneath Harrison Ford's scar, so we make sure that comes out in the sculpt. Anywhere that we feel like we want to accentuate. His brow line, he kinda has a serious look, so I put some shading in there so when it prints, it really accentuates the sculpt.
Matt Stuart: Once the face is finished, it's printed onto the head sculpt. Finally, the sculptor will assemble the different parts of the figure and paint the non Photo Real parts.
Tony Colella: We'll prime this out, the whole figure. We'll base out the figure. Then we'll start doing all the hand-painting. All the details. We've got our green here. So just going in, hand-painting all those details. And then by the end of it, we've got a fully painted model.

@312vandal I mean, they did say they were "photorealistic" and have "faces exactly like the actor they're based on." So... to the people saying something that costs $50, $80, $200+, is better than something that costs $19.99... uhh... I have no conclusion to that thought. I never thought that needed an explanation. The faces are pretty incredible on these figures. Not bad at all for $20! Some of the faces do rival some of the Figuarts, at least for Power Rangers. In general, fancier things often do cost more... you get what you pay for. This is one case where the less expensive item still looks amazing.

@Shin27ecstasy

So like maybe in the last 2 or 3 years various companies making 6inch scale figures started using "face printing" for their heads but calling it by different terminology. Did this tech sorta become free market all the sudden or what? I understand there's various methods to accomplish this but I find it a bit curious all the sudden one by one it's featured on most figures coming out now.
@Pleyway
@Pleyway 5 жыл бұрын
it makes sense why it's used more, it makes it easier for the sculpturs to make faces and the results speaks for themself. Plus with Marvel and Star Wars movies they plan for toys from the start so actors likeness is already secured.

Marvel legends are some of the best figures ever. They're not too expensive to customize and they're damn articulated. But imo toy biz did it better cuz they had hand sclupted figures with better textures
@carlosvera6000
@carlosvera6000 5 жыл бұрын
You may hate me for this, but nowadays I realized that (compared with ToyBiz) the Hasbro's figures are made of a kind of cheap plastic, few points of articulation, use the same mold in almost every figure, some articulations are made of a weak plastic, gross legs and unproportional big heads compared with the body. On the other hand, ToyBiz offered a lot more articulations and balljoints in the groin, that allowed an incredible range of movement for the legs (for example, the Todd McFarlane's Spiderman, Blackheart, etc). It's a shame that Hasbro won't improve this quality details on their figures.
@Neitenth
@Neitenth 5 жыл бұрын
Those ball joints didn't really improve range, but they did make it so that you had to turn the thighs around the wrong way to make them move in certain directions. Also, matchups with recent Hasbro figures are not flattering for ToyBiz. Omega Red and Bishop come to mind as figures that are improvements in basically every way.

I would've thought they just used 3D scanning at this point. I'm pretty sure that's what's used to make the 1/6 head sculpts they make in China. I don't know what kind of 3D software they use, but the one I've been using for years does not show what the model actually looks like in the viewport, instead showing what it calls perspective and orthographic views, so the render of the model doesn't look like the model does in the viewport from either view. That's what has motivated me to begin sculpting with physical media.

They've could've used a 3D camera to scan the actual cast and transfer it to a computer. There's a studio that does it in Japan and it captures WAY more details and looks more realistic because after all, they are scanning an actual person. From the details of the wrinkles in the clothes to the strands of hair. It's easier and much more realistic. But of course you can only make a figurine of a character that was just popular because characters like a young Han Solo is impossible to recreate because the actor has already aged so there's that.

Let me say that, as a collector, I definitely comprehend and support the idea of accurate actor likeness in action figures. However, even though I have on occasion actively seeked items with character resemblance, I must confess that it never bothered me a lot when collecting them. I usually prefer the character over the actor. And when the figure is basically a little handheld replica of an actor, I got a little bit sick. For instance, I like Man of Steel's version of Superman. But I don't like Henry Cavill. Its a major fallacy to put actor likeness over the spirit of a figure. Especially when the actor portraying the character is a major douchebag. Not all actors react normally to finding themselves reduced to figure format. To some of them, its like their ego just exits the Milky Way. And that may later compromise their pure dedication to the craft of playing an important character.
