I believe the narrower you keep your style the easier it is to achieve greatness, yet that doesn’t mean you can’t experiment like trying different fabrics, and overall being creative in your unique way. There’s plenty more to explore within yourself so apply those new finds into your ownstyle

Can we get a video on what an example of evolution/development of one style looks like? I don't think I understand the concept fully, like I think im evolving my own consistent style, but im not sure. Like take a style with oversized clothing or smthng and give examples how you could evolve with like actual clothes and pictures of fits

The part about "developing" your style is essential. You won't ever wear a 10/10 outfit of your own style if you keep jumping from one 5/10 outfit to another by constantly switching styles. It's like if a musician released one pop album, got bored, started hip hop, decided metal for the third. Most musicians usually hit the peak of their style by the 3th or 4th album and they do so by developing it and evolving instead of getting bored and starting from scratch. I think the lesson is not that you can't take influence or try other styles, but you shouldn't abandon your main style.

I have several key styles that don't go together at all! The pieces are kept separate from each other on my ridiculously long clothes rails that have taken over my house. The chaos is organised largely by colour, occasion and siloutte 1) Monochrome ala Yohji/Comme/Issey 2) indigo aizome kimono garb 3) khaki and burgundy gorpcore 4) 1920s art Deco evening attire 3) mad costumes

My style is a streetwear base, with a single piece from other styles that I like to sneak in for a unique look. Over the years this has allowed me to be able to put together a complete techwear fit, workwear fit, etc. It happened organically, but now I HAVE ended up with entire fits for different occasions.

Your take on focusing on a single style is actually really sensible, and I think it's going to inspire me to decimate my wardrobe. My closet is so full of clothes that I probably like but don't wear 99% of the time anyway.

I play Yu-Gi-Oh also japanese and each deck is theme based much like a wardrobe w/some variations against different opponents, but most decks have core cards that you must play otherwise your deck won't have consistency. The theme here is find a way to show up everyday with consistency in your style and maybe splash some different tech here or there.

"Completely you" is what I am pursuing right now, and it has narrowed my focus way down. I just freakin' love clothes and fashion, so I get excited about many styles that make no sense for my lifestyle, personality, and body. Even if everything I love did fit into my life, there are not enough days in the year to wear it all. For me, there really are just a few styles that are highly functional for my work day and make me feel like myself at the same time. The same pieces work for going out with a little zhuzhing.

Damn this video has hit at the right time. I was heavily into streetwear, still am to be fair but I’m growing out if it now and I’m enjoying experimenting with different styles. For me personally I’d build an outfit and then move on to another one unless I find a staple piece which I base an outfit on. This way I don’t have random shit in my wardrobe that I don’t wear. Sometimes I focus on getting clothes of the same colour and building a colour in my wardrobe. I’ve just done brown and green as they’re easy to match with each other. As long as you have some sort of structure I personally don’t see why having different styles would be an issue. Just don’t buy random stuff and build an outfit then move onto the next one. This way if you have different outfits of different styles you can also mix and match which is what I do. Good luck on your fashion journey guys and as always the casual brings that underrated quality content keep pumpi Reg

Man I love your videos! Definitely agree with having to build a wardrobe around one thing first, then u can branch out because otherwise it gets faaar too messy to keep up. I see this a lot in my design school where these mfs are literally hopping from one trend to another and that sense of cohesion is kinda missing. Also jumping styles just looks like you‘re trendhopping most of the time, which actually makes you look more like you DONT know what you‘re doing

This is the line of thinking I usually come from; the design perspective. In design developing your “style” is essential to becoming a true trades person. Yes you can be adept at multiple things and can do multiple styles but you’ll always be viewed as a journeyman until you learn how to take things from other genres and APPLY it to your perspective.

much like the legendary fashion houses have “house codes” i think the older we get, we develop (or should be developing) our own individual “style codes.” shapes, silhouettes, colors, even fabrics that work best for you. once those codes are established, one has then created their own style. and if that foundation ain’t broke, don’t fix it! sure, incorporate a new color trend, or a new accessory trend to keep things fresh… but those core codes are not boring… they’re what makes your personal style yours. my two cents…

I guess I fall somewhere in the middle. I work in a professional office, skate, and also am in an emo band, so i write music and play shows. On the day to day, you can catch me in a knitted polo with high waisted pleated trousers and a cropped jacket of sorts. But the silhouette is somewhat consistent across those looks. Even when I'm skating, I tend to wear high waisted pants that are looser with a tucked in shirt. As a kid, I loved the edgy emo/scene looks of the day, and I'm finally accepting that aesthetic mean a lot in music so I'll have to partake in the look myself, but as I attempt to build that look out, I've been looking towards designers with a loose and artistic design language, like Yohji and Jordan arthur smith.

People do tend to wear their favorite clothing more often, especially children. But there's also a point where we can get stuck in a pattern of buying clothes just because it looks good and not necessarily because its something we like. That goes hand in hand with falling into trends or emulating styles as we are discovering what we like to wear. There came a point where I started being more conscious of what I like and what I choose to buy.

I'm largely restricting myself to white shirt and grey or charcoal trousers these days, but even within those limits you can have a lot of variety. Club collar, knit tie, cardigan is a soft, casual look, that's very different from a standard business casual button down collar worn open-neck, or mandarin collar paired with a chunky watch. Even if most days my only accessory is the pen clipped to my shirt, the range of accessories I can put against a fairly plain background is huge

Personally, I have two, maybe you could say two and a half, styles that have been consistent, even in terms of color, since 1990. Now, hold on a sec. That doesn't mean I'm still wearing Pony, Jordache, etc. It just means that I have a certain way of dressing that allows me to incorporate new pieces as clothing cuts, fits, etc. change, but stay consistent in terms of MY colors and MY personal style. It also doesn't lock me into any specific brand, because brands come and go, but MY style stays consistent (NOT the same, but consistent). Honestly, anyone who knew me back then would see me now and say, "Yup. That's him", while also being able to say, "Wow! You look great!"

As someone living with buckets and buckets of clothes which have never been worn, I can vehemently agree that consistency is much more manageable and cost effective. "Variety" is horseshit. I now view clothing as Staple or Statement pieces, and any statement piece I buy must enhance the stapes. I also do not purchase an abundance of staple pieces because it only overwhelms me.

The focus and the particular nature the Japanese have to one style is so refreshing, plus I think it shows authenticity and compliments character too. I can't help but think partly the reason why though is economical. The crash the Japanese economy had back in the late 80s/early 90s lead to a low growth environment, this would lead to average people being somewhat inventive domestically rather than buying expensive imports like elsewhere in the world. So through sheer creativity and ingenuity, we got the Japanese brands we've come to know and love today. Just my theory, would be good to get a take on this in a future video.

I've found it just easier to have a focused style. Fashion should be just as practical as it is statement making. I can wake up every day and know whatever I wear fits together and it's one less thing to worry about. That fact alone is something I value way more than making a statement with different looks. Also wearing all black helps when shopping. I can close off like 80% of the potential selection if I'm just looking for one shade of clothing. No need to worry if this certain piece will go with what I already own.

I've been into heavy streetwear for the longest of time but as you get older, you realize it's better to have your niche or your lane of style and stick to it. The graphic tees and heavy prints don't hit very hard when you're out of that phase lol. That being said, I think there's something to be said for having options. I think Reggie was right on in saying it's best to stick to a singular style and try to figure out how to incorporate the trends that come along into your individualized style or wardrobe

I've jumped around through so many styles throughout the last 10 years, between vintage, streetwear, a little normcore among other things and I can definitely say that it hurts your personal wardrobe just having a bunch of random shit in your closet. The last few years however I've settled into something I call "street minimal" where I've gotten rid of most of my graphics and stick to very simple oversized tees in monotone colors and basically black jeans and white sneakers. I also try not to layer in such a way where if I remove one layer it ruins the whole fit. However, I wouldn't have arrived here if I hadn't experimented so much over the last decade. Everyone's journey is different.

I certainly have attempted to have a more minimalist focused style/capsule wardrobe (which has been really helpful for work outfits). However my style is more eclectic (mostly due to thrifting & experimenting over the years) so over time a focused style felt too limiting for me personally. I really enjoy having different aesthetics that I can mix and match to produce a more unique style. I also like experimenting with different cuts, fabrics, patterns, etc (ie: chiffon, ruffle dresses with brighter, bolder prints in summer vs more androgynous, classic cuts with more muted, neutral color palette in winter) 👍

I think social media has sanitized fashion. I find alot of people I look up to in fashion (at least on instagram anyway) lack true versitility and diversity. I admire someone who can sport a head to toe, monochormatic tracksuit inpsired by the London mandem one day and then do a full balenciaga type bondage meets ballroom look the next. I do beleive social media has impacted how people view their own creativity when dressing themselves and generally I'm seeing people are sticking to what is received well and what garners the most likes/traction. Forget consistency, it's time to live outside the box and tap into different versions of yourself. We need to start exploring more.
@THECASUALco
@THECASUALco 2 жыл бұрын
I think this is where the paths diverge. I honestly don’t see it that way. You can still be incredibly discovery driven by focusing on a style. You may find alternate paths (in yourself and in fashion) by focusing your efforts. Constantly changing can be versatile but it also could mean there’s a lack of identity. Just like consistency can get stagnant but to the individual it could be the image they truly view themselves as. They shouldn’t have to switch up just because. Take social media out of the equation and the versatility (multiple style) individuals have nothing to showcase en masse as well.
@au-ni6ejsas
@au-ni6ejsas 2 жыл бұрын
@@THECASUALco Totally concur with everything you've just stated besides the ''Constantly changing can be versatile but it also could mean there’s a lack of identity'' statement. I dont view ones versatility in their personal style as ''changing'' nor do I think it means they may lack identity. Change shouldn't even be a word used when talking about this topic in my opinion...evolving or experimenting perhaps would be better fit? Having an identity doesn't/shouldn't equate to adhering to one look, one trend, one colour palette or one style etc. Your identity can actually revolve around versatility in the way you express yourself through fashion. My point about people lacking versatility has many layers to it but one factor is fear of exploration. Generally poeple love comfort and stick to what they think works for them and often wont branch outside that image because why would they? This is who they believe they are & this is what makes them comfortable. But I think if you were to do a social experiment and take say ten people who generally have very consistent wardrobes, present to them other dope options that also compliment their overall image, options that they'd probably never wear ordinarily, I am almost certain at least 4-5 of those people will at least consider broadening their fashion horizons expanding their personal style.

@@au-ni6ejsas “It CAN mean there’s a lack of identity”. I never try to fall into absolutes. That’s dangerous In casual discussion. So I agree there. Admittedly I would have never reached my personal style without exploration. You don’t go from street to Yohji in one full rotation so to speak. I honestly think this episode didn’t really explain how exploration is actually the key to consistency. Settling is natural is really the point. I think where the confusion starts is thinking consistency means continuing the same thing. I do not do that at all. I personally explore hundreds of labels that go deeper into my personal aesthetic. And I appreciate other styles as well. I just think things get confusing if you’re perpetually exploring with different genres. That’s what I meant by identity. But maybe the unexpected is the identity. Not sure but I respect it regardless if I don’t follow it.
