JBV creative brings together art and engineering through his mesmerizing kinetic sculptures. His videos capture the fascinating and intense process of bringing these ideas to life in a way that’s captivating to millions of viewers. When we met a few months ago, we immediately hit it off, and I thought he would be the perfect inaugural guest on this podcast. As part of Morley and Eden’s Grand Adventure, I want to interview creatives across North America in person, in the van, but for this episode, JBV’s whimsical Toronto studio felt like a much more interesting set than the unfinished van. We talk about how he pivoted from working at a toy company to creating his own inventions, the tensions between art, engineering and content creation, the creative process, finding fulfillment, plans for the future, and so much more.

Screw it, I'm reaching out. Morley & Jay if you see this, first of all thanks alot for putting this interview together. It's hard for me to put how I feel into concise unboring words, but umm, I'm also a fairly experienced cad software user with projects and ideas in mind, but I'm still at the stage where the first video is THAT hard to make and publish. From fear of judgment, fear of failing, fear of succeeding, fear of having to make more decisions than I need to, and stepping into a completely unkown territory that is putting myself out there. 90% of what I "consume" nowadays is entrepreneurship, engineering projects, maker channels, content creation tips and LOTS of 3D printing creators including you both which all leads me to believe I'm at the point where I gotta consume less and start my own journey no matter how janky the start might be. I gotta "make an mvp and iterate on it". Thanks alot for sharing that interview, keep making stuff, you guys are awesome.

You got this! It sounds trite, but I think at a certain point "just do it" is the best advice. We mentioned it a few times in the interview - I would definitely recommend reading "The Creative Act" by Rick Rubin to get motivated into putting out creative work and letting go of perfectionism. Your first video won't be perfect, but that's OK! You can never get to the second, better video until you put out that first one.

Loved this! I can relate to so many of the things you both have experienced. So great seeing the two of you just chatting about your experiences in the 3D printing and content creating space.

Over my long life I"ve been many things including an engineer. When you both showed each other the 'iron ring' I had never heard of it. I like that concept a lot - we have nothing quite like it here in the states.

I think JBV would be a great colab with Peter McKinnon. I think Pete could provide the perspective of videography as art and also help with the inner battle of people seeing your art and also the videos getting views. Videos are also art getting out to people. Reach out to Pete!

Great video. Just wanted to throw out context shifting as a concept, that JBV Creative mentioned, but didn't say the term. We talk about this a lot in software. I'd also throw out Agile and specifically Scrum as methodologies worth checking out if you haven't. It works best as a team, but the principles can still be applied as an individual.

Now that you're on the move. Maybe 3D print every day items. Like kitchen things. Or maybe a car? lol. It would be fun.

This was cool and interesting. And, I had never heard of JBV Creative. I'll be subscribing now. Maybe it's because I watch little short form content on YT. If they had a better UX, I might watch more. I watch a lot of TikTok, because I like that UX better (or maybe just doom scrolling) 😉 I still find it weird that people will tell you that they don't like your content and expect you to change or something? If I get bored with or don't enjoy someone's content, I just watch it less. No need to announce my frustration or my departure. So, weird.
