If you want to reduce the weight of the wood backing consider drilling out twenty or so 2-inch holes. If you swiss-cheese it enough you can probably drop half the weight without affecting its book-holding strength.

You could really have some fun with the design of the cutouts, it really just needs to be mostly the perimeter and a little webbing here and there maybe.

The back of the calipers with the short tangs are meant to measure holes or distances between two faces. So you can measure the width of slots and stuff without eyeballing it with the long tangs.
@ge2719
@ge2719 Жыл бұрын
except with the slot is angled, or with a surface thats a different angle to the slot, then you cant measure it with those, the slot has to be at pretty close to 90 degrees to the surface.

What is really needed for digital pianos is an inexpensive monitor arm mount! No one has done it yet. Then any cheap LCD monitor (older 22" 16:10 ones go for for like $30!) with a VESA mount can be positioned anywhere we want. So it would be built into a keyboard stand that is height adjustable, that can adjust the tilt of the keyboard as well. People never think of that but it can make a big difference if its dialed in just right. Think sleeve bearing with a clamp on each side to lock it at a particular height. You've got a good engineering mind. Its time you embraced metalwork to compliment your woodworking and plastic 3D printing.
@robertlaw4073
@robertlaw4073 2 жыл бұрын
I like the effort here but I think 5 lbs of plywood is kinda overkill. Suggestion - instead of using wood for the back, you could use some acrylic plastic... if it's bending you can laminate up the acrylic to get to a solid thickness and also the glue adds ridgidity (this is how they make stuff "bulletproof"), or even scroll out the inside of that piece of plywood wood to make it lighter (you will notice on most console pianos even the wood music stands are cutaway frames.) Last bit of advice: print those pieces with ABS and/or with a thicker line width so you don't have to alter the angle forward to accommodate the sag from the weight of the wood as it will be more rigid that way. Cheers to a successful project regardless.

As a fellow American I find your dedication to imperial measurements disturbing. 👀 jkjk, everyone does their own thing of course, I just find it a bit easier to design for 3D printing in metric, especially since line/layer thicknesses are usually (always?) defined in metric. This is the second video of yours that I'm watching and I'm really enjoying your content! I feel like I'm learning a lot about Fusion 360 beyond my self taught ham-fisted approach. Keep up the good work!

I'm a Brit living in the US. Imperial measurement are a health hazard. Fortunately, in engineering, we use metric, so I'm not impacted by it often.

Can't you just change the default unit in the software. Or just give elements dimensions in whatever unit, and let the software handle the rest?
@MorleyKert
@MorleyKert 2 жыл бұрын
Yep! That’s what I do. fusion deals in real lengths (I.e. it knows that 1 inch = 25.4 mm) and you can enter dimensions in any unit.

The only thing I would suggest is mill away some of the wood from the backside, take it in an angle 1/4 to half the thickness at the top down to the full thickness right above your brackets. This will make it less top heavy and have a nicer profile.

The wood was a bad choice because of weight. You can 3d print honeycomb patterns in pieces, and clip them together. Also choosing different petg or other materials that are less flexible you can be golden in instant.

For making models like this, an easy to start and no licence needed option is OpenScad. It is not the same as Fusion 360. Instead you build models using simple geometric command like; cube( 10 ); // for a cube with sides = 10 mm. A full CAD option like Fusion 360 is a great tool, but will for many have a high startup difficulty. Just getting some understanding of the geometric building blocks used can help a lot when trying to understand how things are done.

You can tell a child what the dangers are a thousand times and they are in no less danger. Let them get rag-dolled once, you never have to worry about it again. Then you can use that as a reminder in a parking lot. "Take my finger. Getting hit by a car is like when you walked in front of that swing, except with every kid in your whole school on it." Yup, it's called the wisdom of experience, not hindsight. As you were fussing about that front angle I was thinking, "Obviously that is superfluous to the applied load". Only reason I think that is because I've been there and done that enough that, after I'm done considering critical design dimensions, it's the second thing I think about. But it's what prototyping does today, and it comes cheaper than experience that isn't necessarily going to be called on again soon.
