DENJIRO: Right now, I'm wearing a heated vest, which has been becoming popular lately. Let's disassemble one to see how they work.
Here is a disassembled heated vest. When we take the cloth on the backside off, we can see that there are many wires attached to it. And here is the switch. From there, the wires are connected to a heating element that is nestled in non-flammable sheets. When we attach a battery, turn it on, and observe it with a thermal camera... As you can see, the heating elements are heating up. Electricity travels from the battery to the wires, which results in Joule heating. Wow, so this is how the heating wires are lined up!
These portable hand warmers are gaining popularity as well. When we take a look inside, we find a heating element. The way it heats up is the same as that of a heated vest. It generates heat by running electricity to the heating element.
I've taken the principle of how heat is generated from electricity flow and created this machine. There are wires on a board. Let's run electricity through the wires and see what happens through a thermal camera. The wires that didn't turn hot are copper, whereas the ones that turned hot and red in the camera are nichrome. Metals with higher electrical resistance will generate more heat through Joule heating when electricity is running through it. Copper wires have low electrical resistance, whereas nichrome wires have high electrical resistance. Therefore, nichrome wires heat up easily like this.
Products like heated vests and portable hand warmers use a heating element made with something that has high electrical resistance, like nichrome.
